Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers Race for Hope 5K Run/Walk
By James Moreland
May 6, 2007
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

With all the race competition this first weekend of May, it is amazing and gratifying that the Race for Hope continues to grow. More than 15,000 runners participated in the 40 races held in the DC area this weekend. This 5K had 5,775 people involved, down slightly from the 6,100 from last year. Through its ninth year, through generous gifts from individuals and company sponsorships, the Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers Race for Hope raised more than $4 million in its history. Last year it was more than $1 million dollars. This year the figure is 1.4 million, showing that it grows in size and scope each year.

The Race for Hope DC is open to all participants who seek a 5K challenge, a runner-friendly course down Pennsylvania Avenue in the nation's capital, or just a fun way to support the brain tumor community. The Race for Hope DC funds research and support services for those affected. This year, proceeds from this 5K Run/Walk will benefit two organizations: Brain Tumor Society and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure.

The Cassidy & Pinkard Colliers Race for Hope to benefit Brain Tumor Society and Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure looks forward to runners making this an annual tradition of inspiration.

Of the nearly 1,500 racers, Rebecca Nathan (41) of Arlington, VA had a most joyous return. Last year she was the masters champion in 18:57. This year she improved her fourth place finish with an overall win in 19:02. Alexis Torre (19) of Fort Monmouth, NJ (in photo) led a strong out of state contingency with an excellent 16:14.

Each year more than 60 runners finish the race as survivors. The spirit of the event is to make that number grow each year.

In the photo below, runners and walkers head toward the Capitol building with the spirit of hope.
