Riverplace on the Schuylkill Announces Second Annual 5K Run
By Alan Shirk
May 14, 2007
Reading, PA
For the Washington Running Report

RiverPlace on the Schuylkill will hold its RiverPlace Run 2007, which includes a 5K run and a 1.5-mile fun run and walk on Sunday, June 3, 2007 beginning at 9:00 a.m. and starting at Schlegel Park on Lancaster Avenue in Reading.

This is the second year for the run which is being sponsored by Fromuth Tennis Running Fitness and co-sponsored by the Reading Hospital and Medical Center. The supporting sponsor is Key Printing.

RiverPlace on the Schuylkill is a non-profit organization comprised of a broad-based coalition of community partners interested in enhancing both sides of the Schuylkill River and its neighborhoods.

The June 3 run is one of several annual activities of RiverPlace. Registration at Schlegel Park is at 8:00 a.m. The 5K Run starts at 9:00 a.m. The 1.5 Mile Run and Walk starts at 9:05 a.m. The entry fee for the 5k Run or the 1.5 Mile Fun Run/Walk is $17 before May 19 and $22 after that date and race day. Each entrant will receive a commemorative tee shirt. Registration is $15 without a shirt. All student entrants will receive a free RiverPlace student membership.

Race Director Ron Horn, Pretzel City Sports, said the race will follow the Thun Trail, cross the Schuylkill River to paved trails and roads near Reading Area Community College, and return to finish on the new Thun Trail pedestrian bridge that crosses Lancaster Avenue. The walk will follow part of the race route and also the West Reading Playground. Horn said runners last year praised the course as being fast and scenic.

Numerous prizes will be awarded to male and female runners in six age categories. Prizes will also go to the oldest and youngest male and female race finishers.

All proceeds from the run will benefit Schuylkill Riverfront restoration and development projects.
