The Sallie Mae Fund today announced that Washington, D.C. Mayor
Adrian M. Fenty will run in the Sallie Mae 10K race on Sunday,
May 6, 2007 at West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C.. Sponsored
by The Sallie Mae Fund, the 24th annual event benefits the D.C
College Access Program, which helps D.C. high school students
achieve a higher education.Mayor Fenty, a seasoned runner, is also a strong advocate of
making higher education a reality for more District students.
By participating in this race, Mayor Fenty is helping the
D.C. College Access Program (DC-CAP) raise money to give
D.C. public high school students more opportunity to attend
college. Fenty is a Board member of DC-CAP. This organization
provides direct counseling and financial assistance to more
than 12,000 D.C. high school students. Since DC-CAP's founding
in 1999, the rate of college enrollment of D.C. high school
students has nearly doubled. On May 6, Mayor Fenty will run for his fellow Washingtonians,
as he tries to beat his previous Sallie Mae 10K personal best.
Mayor Fenty's participation underscores the importance of
efforts to help more deserving District students enroll in and
graduate from college. Students and their families are invited
to join the mayor at the event both as participants and as
volunteers. Since 2000, The Sallie Mae Fund has raised more than $1.3
million - in event proceeds, sponsorships, and grants - to help
DC-CAP send local students to college. The Sallie Mae 10K Run/2K Walk begins at 8:00 a.m. EDT in West
Potomac Park along the scenic Potomac River in downtown
Washington, D.C. The 6.2-mile foot race draws a competitive
field of local and international runners in addition to casual
local runners and walkers of all abilities. In addition to the
10K race, this year's event will feature a pre-race warm-up,
wheelchair race, 2K Family Walk/Run, and a post-race breakfast.
