The Annual New Balance Baltimore Women's Classic 5K

Race Continues Its Mission to Support Women's Running and Women's Health Initiatives

For the Washington Running Report

The 33rd Annual race takes place Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the Baltimore Museum of Industry Baltimore, MD. The annual Baltimore Women's Classic 5K (BWC) will take place on Sunday, June 22, 2008 beginning and ending at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. The BWC continues to celebrate its place as the second-longest consecutively running all women's event in the entire country.

This year marks the 33rd year for the race with organizers expecting more than 1,100 women to participate in the event. Currently more than 650 women are participating in an 8 week training program to meet the challenges of setting personal time records or to complete the 3.1 mile race.

For the sixth year, WJZ-TV's Denise Koch will serve as the emcee of the day's events, which consist of the women's 5K race, a Kids' Co-ed Fun Run for children eight and under, and a post-race village featuring merchandise, exhibits, and displays by sponsors, community group and vendors catering to women's interests.

The Baltimore Women's Classic is dedicated to promoting fitness and healthy living among all women while increasing awareness of women's health issues. Their guiding principle is the belief that athletic accomplishments are measured by healthy attitudes and reaching individual, personal goals - not merely by the winning race times. The race promotes a healthy spirit in our community where runners, volunteers and race organizers help women of all ages and abilities take strong steps toward a healthier lifestyle while raising money to support local women s health initiatives for those less fortunate. In 2007, the BWC contributed to the Barnett-Searing National Cancer Foundation and funded a pilot program in partnership with the Red Devils at Mercy Medical Center. This pilot program continues to provide essential support services to ovarian cancer patients and their families.

In September, 2007, the Baltimore Women's Classic was awarded 501c3 status. As a non-profit public charity, the BWC is anticipating using this year's race proceeds to expand support services for gynecologic cancer patients and their families to additional local hospitals. "In 2002, this race had 120 women participate," said Tom Amatucci, Director of the BWC. "When our present steering committee took over 'care-tending' this race in 2003, we were absolutely delighted to have 350 women participate. We had 950 women run and walk the event last year and are anticipating more than 1,100 to join us this June. When I think about that kind of growth and the dedication of that many women to do something positive not only for themselves, but for other women, it is truly remarkable. They are truly remarkable; all of our Baltimore Classic Women."
