Capitol Hill Classic 10K & 3K

New Course for the 29th Year
By Jim Hage

Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

Ethiopians Birhanu Wukaw (in photo) and Yihunlish Bekele (in photo below) raced to convincing wins over a revamped Capitol Hill 10K course, in 31 minutes 58 seconds and 37:39, adding international flair to a domestic running institution. The event, its 29th running, circumnavigates the city's most famous landmark -- the Capitol -- while marking and celebrating the Hill's eclectic and historic neighborhoods.

The winners, both from Addis Ababa and in the United States to race, currently live in Washington, although Wukaw is scheduled to join his Foot Solutions team in Atlanta soon. Wukaw won the Lawyers Have Heart 10K in Washington last June, and Bekele ran 2:42:52 in the 2006 Rock 'n' Roll Marathon in San Diego.

In halting English, both described satisfaction with the course, although with some disappointment in the relatively slow efforts. "The time is not good," Wukaw said. "It is only me running, no one fighting. Only me." He beat runner-up Robert Wade, by 17 seconds.

Wade (26), living in Arlington but born in Waterford, Ireland, stayed with Wukaw for only the first two miles. Wade ran the Boston Marathon last month in what was for him a disappointing 2:33:36, and said he is just now "tipping away," rebuilding fitness and increasing his weekly mileage from 35 to 70.

Bart Borghuis (32), took third in 32:22. Borghuis, second last weekend at the Battle of the Boulevards 10K in 32:16, moved to the area only recently from Philadelphia. He is married to Veena Reddy, who ran a personal-best 2:38:08 to finish 15th in last month's Olympic trials marathon in Boston.
