NewBalance Wondergirl 5K Race
At Hains Point This Saturday, May 17, 2008
By Emily Blakeslee May 15, 2008 Washington, DC For the Washington Running Report
Come cheer as the D.C. Girls on the Run cross the finish
line.
This Saturday, Washington, DC will host its first NewBalance
Wondergirl 5K run at 7:30 a.m. Program participants, parents,
and volunteers will join together to run the Hains Point course
on what is expected to be a great day! The inaugural
wondergirl 5K race will bring together more than 200 girls from
public, charter, and private schools across the city. Part of a national program that delivers character building
programs of experiential learning through running, the race is
a culmination of a 12-week Girls on the Run training
program. "We're excited to have such a great turnout for our
first event. Between the support from parents and the
community, we're expecting a good crowd out there to help
celebrate the girls' achievement" said Emily Weinmann, Co-
Director of the D.C. program.
The Girls on the Run program teaches well-defined social
and personal skills aimed at developing higher self-esteem,
positive peer groups, and improving the body image for
adolescent girls. The non-competitive 5K race event gives the
girls a chance to shine and an overwhelming sense of
accomplishment.
