Ng'eno Set to Defend Title Down Under
By George Banker
November 20, 2002
Hyattsville, MD
For the Washington Running Report

The line up for the 10th Outback Steakhouse Corridor Classic 8K continues. The local and international talent is set to wake up the streets; this is not a day for running shoes but racing flats. On Sunday, November 24, 2002, 9:00 A.M., the start and finish will be at the Outback Steakhouse at Prince George's Plaza off East-West Highway in Hyattsville, Md. The race is to benefit Special Olympics Prince George's County.

Last year, the diversified field included Sammy Ng'eno of Kenya (residing in West Chester, Pa.) who established a new event record of 23:34 and earned a $100 bonus. There will be another bonus for a new record but it will not be easy. The total purse is $5,200 for the top males and females. The event bonus is for the open and masters divisions.

"I knew it was a tough course and I wanted to try and break away fast. When I train and go uphill I push and when I go downhill, I push it. I had the people cheering for me. I expected the competition to be hard," said Ng'eno.

The female open record was set in 1999 by Naoko Ishibe of Silver Spring, Md. with a time of 27:20.

Lee DiPietro of Ruxton, Md., cashed in on the event bonus for the masters with a 29:45. "I'm not sure if I have raced against the other women, so I didn't know what to expect. As a master, you never know if someone new has aged up! It was a great day and it was a fun morning," stated DiPietro.

John Tuttle of Douglasville, Ga., was two seconds short last year (25:12) of breaking the mark set by Chris Fox of Shepherdstown, WV in 2000 (25:11). Tuttle will return, but will he be successful?

It will not be quiet on the team front, "After talking to the race director, it seems like our team (Pacers) has the best chance of winning so I hope we live up to their expectations and smoke the competition!" stated team captain Michael Wardian (Team Pacers/New Balance).

Late registration and packet pick up will take place on Saturday, November 23, 2002, 11:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M., at the Outback Steakhouse at 3500 East West Highway (outside the restaurant). On race day, registration will be held from 7:00 A.M. - 8:30 A.M., at the Food Court (inside Prince George's Plaza).

For full race details, call (301) 985-5027 or visit the race Web site. There will also be a 2 Mile Fun Walk.
