of Chevy Chase, MD
has qualified for the
2003 Boston Marathon
through her performance at this year's
Washington D.C. Marathon.
At this year's
Edgemoor Classic 5K
her goal was to break 20:00;
she ran 20:05 and
seemed pleased.
"Little races are fun
and quick," she said.
First Men at the Finish Anthony Belber, 29, coach
and teacher at Georgetown Day School and Zach
Vaslow, 17, of Bethesda and member of
Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Boys' Cross Country
team. Zach trained solo for three weeks during the sniper
shootings; Anthony had his boys and girls running stairs
and hallways during the time of vigilance. "I played with the
pace to slow down Zachary, but he took the lead instead,"
detailed Anthony. He also used surges of quicker running
but still didn't shake Zach; on the last hill, Anthony gained a
few yards on his competitor and heard Zach's footsteps the
rest of the way. A strong sprint to the finish retained Anthony
Belber's win as defending champion. (Belber ran 16:10 last
year and Vaslow ran 16:52 for fourth place in 2001.)
Neighborhood running events help build a sense of
community,
encourage a healthy lifestyle and open participation to
many.
Girls and boys run with their parents or friends, veteran
runners blend in with lacrosse, soccer and tennis players,
swimmers and golfers. Running is fun and it's easier to
bring
people together on a 5K course than on a different playing
field. Imagine a touch football game with over 200 people..
"Awesome!" enthused one father to his young son as they
crossed
the finish line together. Dad explained that it was their first
5K; they ran the circuit in 35 minutes.
"Almost," responded one girl when asked whether she and
her
friend ran the entire 3.1 miles. It takes more effort than a
trip to the shopping mall, an accomplishment to begin the
weekend. These middle school girls play soccer and swim
and
attend Georgetown Day School and Holton Arms.
Llewellyn Smith, 9, received a warm reception from
his
father
after finishing first amongst the pre-teen crowd with a quick
time of 23:47. Llewellyn is a fourth grader at Barnsley
Magnet
School and plays soccer.
Megan Andrews finished in 21:27 for second place
female,
a two
minute improvement over last year's 23:30! Fantastic!
"This is where it all starts," remarked Ted Poulos on the
morning's event to benefit Bethesda Elementary School.
