Spring Valley/Sumner 5K Classic Generates Large Donation to Children's Hospital
November 19, 2002 Washington, DC For the Washington Running Report
At a breakfast this morning honoring sponsors and volunteers of
the twelfth annual race, Edward J. Miller, Jr., President of
W.C. & A.N. Miller Companies, presented a check for $150,000 to
Dr. Naomi Luban, who accepted the donation on behalf of
Children's National Medical Center. In making the donation,
Miller spoke of his passion for helping this institution which
has done so much to brighten the lives of children and their
families in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area.In accepting the donation, Dr. Luban, who serves as Interim
Executive Director of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders,
and is Chair of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, described the
important work of the Center, and invited people to come to the
Center to make donations of blood. The blood and its components
are reformulated and packaged to serve the tiniest patients,
some of whom need just two teaspoons of blood. The Spring Valley/Sumner 5K Classic was held September 14, 2002
at the Shops at Sumner Place shopping center on Sangamore Road
in Bethesda, MD. The twelfth annual event drew more than 700
registrants to the 5K and children's fun runs. Chris
Hendrix-Buxton ran away from last year's winner, Joseph Daniels,
and finished in 16:10. Four women finished within 25 seconds of
winner Sharon Donovan, who clocked an 18:41. Both winners
commented on the great neighborhood atmosphere and pleasant
weather. See a full

race was announced as Saturday, September 13, 2003. Mark your
