Spring Valley/Sumner 5K Classic Generates Large Donation to Children's Hospital
November 19, 2002
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

At a breakfast this morning honoring sponsors and volunteers of the twelfth annual race, Edward J. Miller, Jr., President of W.C. & A.N. Miller Companies, presented a check for $150,000 to Dr. Naomi Luban, who accepted the donation on behalf of Children's National Medical Center. In making the donation, Miller spoke of his passion for helping this institution which has done so much to brighten the lives of children and their families in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area.

In accepting the donation, Dr. Luban, who serves as Interim Executive Director of the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, and is Chair of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, described the important work of the Center, and invited people to come to the Center to make donations of blood. The blood and its components are reformulated and packaged to serve the tiniest patients, some of whom need just two teaspoons of blood.

The Spring Valley/Sumner 5K Classic was held September 14, 2002 at the Shops at Sumner Place shopping center on Sangamore Road in Bethesda, MD. The twelfth annual event drew more than 700 registrants to the 5K and children's fun runs. Chris Hendrix-Buxton ran away from last year's winner, Joseph Daniels, and finished in 16:10. Four women finished within 25 seconds of winner Sharon Donovan, who clocked an 18:41. Both winners commented on the great neighborhood atmosphere and pleasant weather. See a full report on this year's race, with photos and a list of award winners.

At the end of the morning's activities, the date of next year's race was announced as Saturday, September 13, 2003. Mark your calendar now for this important community event!
