Countdown to Veterans Day 10K
Be Part of the Celebration
By George Banker November 2, 2003 Rockville, MD For the Washington Running Report
Capital Running Company announced today that it is putting up a
$2,050 cash purse at the Veterans Day 10K. "We fully support
this race, and want to make sure it attracts a strong field,"
said race director Rick Freedman. "The race has had cash prizes
in the past, and we wanted to continue the tradition."The 4th annual Veterans Day 10K presents a salute to our
nation's veterans and the women and men in uniform. The race, to
be held at 8:00 am on Sunday, November 9, 2003, is one of a
series of events in the U.S. Army's Operation Tribute to
Freedom, which provides special events and activities to welcome
home and recognize veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom. A
discount is offered for active duty military personnel, and the
race offers team competition in four categories. It's a day for fun and fitness; come and join the excitement! Cash prizes will be awarded ten deep: $250 for 1st, $200 for
2nd, $150 for 3rd, $100 for 4th, $75 for 5th, and $50 for 6th
through 10th. In addition, merchandise or gift certificates will
be awarded to the top three finishers in five-year age groups
from 19 and under to 80 and above. The course is the popular flat and fast course out and back
around Hains Point. In the history of this race, there have been three years of
international competition for the top placing. In 1998, George
Probst of Blacksburg, VA, out kicked Philippe Rolly of France
30:26 to 31:18. In 1999, Lemma Bonssa of Ethiopia faced off
against Andrey Kuznetsov of Russia. It was Bonssa's victory
30:06 to 30:10. Rolly finished third in 31:11. In 2000, Bonssa
returned to defend his title against John Tuttle of
Douglasville, GA, and Andrey Shalagin of Russia. Tuttle, a
masters runner, proved to be the fastest with a 30:52 to 31:02
over Bonssa. Bonssa, however, holds the fastest time in the
three years. "It was a good race. The three of us stayed together, I was
behind. I tried to push; the guys were a little strong. In the
last 200 meters I took second. I came today because I like to
run a hard 10K before a marathon. The last two weeks I've been
running 120 miles a week and my legs are a little tired," stated
Andrey Kuznetsov, a 1999 runner and first masters division
finisher. In 1998, Barbara Fallon of Arlington, VA, faced off against
Martha Merz of Annandale, VA. Fallon was victorious 36:57 to
37:01. In 1999, Naoko Ishibe of Silver Spring, MD, met up
against Elvira Kolpakova of Russia and Air Force Major Kimberly
Markland. Into the last mile it was Ishibe 35:46 for first
followed by Kolpakova in second (36:07) and then Markland
(36:17). "It was a little windy. My first mile was 5:30; there was a pack
of three. At the turn around I went to the front and no one went
with me," stated Ishibe, the 1999 winner. "This was supposed to be easy for me. I was trying to help the
guys around me, they responded very well. The race was well
organized and I'm glad they used the chip. My coach told me not
to run. I'm glad that I came here," said the 1999 fourth place
finisher, Nili Abramski of Israel. In 2000, Kolpakova returned, the bar was raised with competition
from Svetlana Zakharova of Russia and Alisa Harvey of Manassas.
It was a runaway as Zakharova finished in 32:53 and Harvey was
second in 35:11, followed by Kolpakova in third with 36:49. "I train in Rockville and there was a headwind going out and
coming back from Hains Point. I went through the 5K in 16:20. I
am preparing for the Honolulu Marathon next month, which I'll be
running for the fifth time. My best 10K time is 32:35," said
2000 winner Zakharova.
"The race went as I had expected. I have not been doing much
training since the Army 10 Miler, but I'm strong enough. The
first mile (5:24) wasn't comfortable, it was too fast. I should
have been 5:30. I like to start out gradual. I had a good
effort," stated 2000 runner up, Harvey.
