Capital Running Company
Veterans Day 10K

The 4th Running
By Rick & Kathy Freedman

Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

More than 1,287 finishers celebrated Veteran's Day this Sunday by racing in the Fourth Annual Veteran's Day 10K sponsored, managed, and scored by Capital Running Company (and Washington Running Report). The race took place in West Potomac Park in celebration of Veterans Day.

The wind was a definite factor on this colder-than-normal day. A director of any race in the park, which runs along the Potomac River, expects the wind to be blowing strongly on race day. It was much worse on Saturday, though, with gusts in the thirties.

The extensive awards structure and the cash awards for the top ten attracted a very strong field of racers. And their results did not disappoint. Taking first place honors for the men was Ovidiu Olteanu, 33, from Romania by way of Michigan. His time was 31:20, at a pace of 5:03 (in the wind) and an age-graded percentage of 86.1%. See an explanation of age-graded results below. Right behind him, Russian masters star Andrey Kuznetsov finished just 18 seconds later in 31:38. His age-graded result shows an astounding 92.2%. Kuznetsov is always in the awards in any race he runs and has finished first overall in many races. Rounding out third place was Eric Lavigne from Ashburn, VA in 31:59. The top 17 men were under 35 minutes. Eighth pace overall for the men was masters phenom Chuck Moeser who ran 33:56 with an age-grading of 90%.

First place for the women was Gaithersburg resident Dorota Gruca in a time of 34:27 (age-graded 87%). Second place was Denisa Costescu from Michigan in 34:34. Third place honors went to local elite Meghan McLaughlin in 35:33 who had an age-grading of 84.3%. That is a national class performance! The top ten women were all under 39 minutes. Falls Church's Betty Blank had an age- grading of 81.4% with her time of 41:41. She always finds a way to be an age group winner.

Washington Running Club won the coed team awards with a combined time of 3:22:01, sixteen minutes and 25 seconds ahead of the next team.

Almost all the random awards were donated by the local specialty shoe stores. Please frequent these stores that support your races. Those stores were Fleet Feet of Adams Morgan, Metro Run and Walk, Potomac River Running, Footsteps of Reston, and Gotta Run in Crystal City.

Put this race on your calendar for next year. The date is November 7, 2004.

We hope you had a good time and that many of you had personal bests.

Age-graded results are calculated using tables developed by the World Association of Veteran Athletes (the world governing body for masters track and field, long distance running and race walking). These tables were first published in 1989 and were updated in 1994. The tables can be used in two ways: first, by comparing your time to a standard for your sex and age, you can determine your Performance Level Percent. These percentages can be interpreted as follows:
100% = Approximate World-Record Level
Over 90% = World Class
Over 80% = National Class
Over 70% = Regional Class
Over 60% = Local Class

We are providing these age-graded results, at the request of many of our runners, as a performance comparison. We hope that they will be interesting and helpful for runners of all ages, not only to compare your performances to others, but to track your progress over time. This is a service of Capital Running Company's searchable results.

David Angell and Rob Magin finished 4th and 5th, respectively.
