Count Down to the Fifth Annual Veterans Day 10K
In Honor of Veterans

Run Along the Beautiful Potomac River in the Nation's Capital
Capital Running Company salutes America's veterans by
sponsoring the 5th Annual Veterans Day 10K, on Sunday, November
7, 2004, 8:00 am in West Potomac Park near the FDR Memorial in
Washington, DC. The race course is flat and fast along the
Potomac River and around the tip of Hains Point in East Potomac
Park. On May 13, 1938, a legal holiday scheduled for November 11th
and named "Armistice Day" came into being, and on June 1, 1954,
the word "Armistice" was replaced by "Veterans." The holiday
is a day to honor American veterans of all wars and thank all
living veterans for their service and contributions to our

Veterans Day 10K. Register in person or pick up your bib, t-shirt, and rental
ChampionChip on Saturday, November 6, at Metro Run & Walk, 7516
Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, Virginia, from 11 am to 3 pm. On race day morning, packet pickup begins at 7:00 am near the
start/finish line in West Potomac Park. The Veterans Day 10K is an excellent recovery run one week
after the Marine Corps Marathon to keep the legs in shape. Post-race refreshments include bagels, bananas, apples, water,
and a hot beverage. There will be numerous random prizes during the post-race
ceremony, including valuable gift certificates from area running
shoe stores; you must be present to win random prizes.
Online registration is available through Thursday, November
4. This year's Veterans Day 10K run for top awards will be
competitive. The following age group event record holders have
entered the 2004 race: Ovidiu Olteanu (31:20 in 2003, winner),
Denisa Costescu (34:35 in 2003, female 25-29), Chuck Moeser
(33:56 in 2003, 50-54), Betty Blank (41:41 in 2003, 50-54),
Patrick Griffith (38:26 in 2003, 55-59), Alice Franks (44:38 in
2003, 55-59), Walt Washburn (59:32 in 2003, 80 & Over) and Hedy
Marque (56:36 in 1998, 80 & Over).
Overall and Age Group Awards
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top ten male and female
finishers: $250 for 1st, $200 for 2nd, $150 for 3rd, $100 for
4th, $75 for 5th, and $50 for 6th through 10th. As in 2003, the
cash purse totals $2,050. Valuable merchandise or gift certificates will be given to the
top 3 finishers in the following age groups: 19 and under, 20-
24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-
69, 70-74, 75-79, and 80 and over. This year's prizes included many gift certificates from Fleet
Feet Adams Morgan, Metro Run & Walk, Potomac River Running,
Gotta Run and Georgetown Running Company running stores; high
quality garments with the race logo embroidered; and more.
Team Competition
The winning coed team will receive an embroidered Veterans Day
10K sweatshirt for each member and a team trophy.Teams are comprised to up to 10 runners with the top five to
score. All teams are coed and must have at least male or female
finisher.
Parking
There is no parking on Ohio Drive in West Potomac Park in the
vicinity of the start/finish line. There is no parking along
Independence Avenue at any time.Look for side street parking north of Constitution Avenue NW
between 18th and 23rd Streets NW. For directions to the race site, please see information on the

Metrorail - Opens at 7:00 am on Sunday
Please consider having a friend drop you off at 23rd &
Constitution Avenue NW before the 10K run, then ride Metrorail
home.The closest stop to the event site is Foggy Bottom/GWU on the
orange and blue lines. The stop is located at 23rd & H Streets
NW. After the race, walk or jog to the Foggy Bottom/GWU Metro
station from the race site by heading north on Ohio Drive, then
pass the Lincoln Memorial, and walk or jog north along 23rd
Street, NW to H Street, NW. If you ride Metrorail to the event, walk south along 23rd
Street past the State Department and Lincoln Memorial. Pass on
the east side of Lincoln and look south to the Potomac River.
That park adjacent to the river is the race staging area.
