A New Option for Athletes Seeking Improved Recovery From Hard Workouts
From FRS Plus Antioxidant Energy Drink November 15, 2005 Santa Barbara, CA Washington Running Report
Good Nutrition Improves Athletic Performance and Recovery
Flavonoids are natural compounds found in the seeds, skin,
peel, bark, and flowers of plants that have natural
antioxidant, free radical scavenging, and anti-inflammatory
properties.Over 4000 flavonoid compounds are found in the plant kingdom.
The flavonoid component imparts the colorful pigment of fruits,
vegetables and herbs. Some of the most common sources of
flavonoids in the human diet are from red wine, green tea,
onions, apples, grape skins, blueberries, and broccoli. Despite the strong evidence for the health benefits of
flavonoid antioxidants, many Americans consume insufficient
amounts of fruits and vegetables each day.
A New Beverage With Antioxidant Properties
FRS(R) Plus antioxidant health drink is a scientifically
formulated supplement beverage designed to fight fatigue, boost
performance and neutralize free radicals before they can cause
cellular damage.New Sun Nutrition announced in June, 2005, the results of an
independent ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity)
laboratory study revealing that FRS Plus Original health drink
delivers higher antioxidant power than selected leading health
beverages. The comparative analysis was conducted by Bell
Advisory Services and the testing was performed by Brunswick
Laboratories. "Of the ten beverages tested, FRS Plus Original had the highest
ORAC score," said David Bell, chief executive officer of Bell
Advisory Services.* "It ranked 7.4 times higher than Lipton
Lemon Iced Tea which touts 'naturally protective antioxidants'
and 13.6 times higher than Red Bull, the leading energy drink
on the market." Since its inception, FRS Plus has fuelled the performance of
both endurance and power athletes, including top U.S. mountain
biker Travis Brown and AVP beach volleyball star Dax Holdren.
It has quickly become the daily health supplement of choice for
many professional athletes who use it to improve energy, focus,
and recovery. FRS Plus is also currently being used by the
Los Angeles Lakers as part of its off-season training regimen. "FRS Plus provides the perfect balance of sustained short-term
energy, focus and recovery improvement and long-term health
benefits," said Dick Lamb, chief executive officer of New Sun
Nutrition. "Most antioxidant sources simply don't offer
immediate, tangible benefits, while most energy drinks fail to
provide antioxidant protection." FRS Plus delivers its antioxidant potency through a synergistic
combination of quercetin (found in red onions, blueberries,
apple skins, and spinach), green tea catechins, and 7 key
vitamins and metabolic enhancers. The breakthrough formula is
the result of years of research and development by Dr. Lan Bo
Chen, Ph.D., Professor of Pathology at Harvard Medical School's
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Dr. Mitsunori Ono, Ph.D., world-
renowned phytochemical expert and Senior Scientist with the
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and other pioneers in
flavonoid research. The release of the ORAC assay results confirms FRS Plus'
ability to deliver the free-radical fighting antioxidant
strength needed to help protect the body against oxidative
stress. Oxidative stress has been linked with many chronic
disease processes including cardiovascular disease, diabetes,
stroke, Alzheimer's, arthritis, and DNA damage leading to
mutations and some types of cancer. The comparative analysis of antioxidant activity is based on
data generated using the ORAC assay, conducted by Brunswick
Labs in Wareham, Massachusetts, a leading independent
laboratory. The ORAC assay tests antioxidant activity against
the peroxyl radical of naturally grown fruits and vegetables
and processed beverages and foods. First developed by Dr.
Ronald Prior, nutritionist and research chemist with the USDA,
it is a methodology that provides a reliable and standardized
way of measuring antioxidants in foods and other substances and
is accepted as the industry standard for measuring antioxidant
capacity. The assay is also used by the United States
Department of Agriculture.
Free Radical Scavenger Formula Demonstrates Enhanced Athletic Performance
An Independent Pepperdine University Clinical Trial Made
Public in October, 2004:
A clinical trial conducted by Pepperdine University revealed a
dramatic improvement in time trial performance by elite
cyclists as a result of the daily intake of FRS Plus, a
breakthrough Free Radical Scavenger antioxidant supplement
beverage. The researchers concluded that FRS Plus significantly
boosted peak performance and markedly enhanced endurance in 11
elite cyclists. "Exercise performance changes of 1-4% are significant and
usually mean the difference between winning and losing. FRS
Plus yielded a 3.1% improvement, which is impressive,
especially in highly trained elite athletes," observes Holden
S.H. MacRae, PhD, Principal Investigator and Professor of
Sports Medicine at Pepperdine University. "Muscular exercise promotes the production of free radicals
that contribute to muscle fatigue. Daily use of FRS Plus
notably improved endurance exercise performance by minimizing
fatigue. These findings suggest that FRS Plus may also
improve recovery time and reduce the inflammation associated
with high intensity exercise. Subjects performing high
intensity 30 km time trials demonstrated sustained increases in
muscle power output and whole body gross mechanical efficiency,
thereby completing the trial in a significantly faster time." "Variations of this magnitude are typically achieved in
athletes by blood doping or living at high altitude," adds
MacRae. "These study results have significant implications for
athletes seeking an edge without risking their health or
reputation." The twelve-week trial was a double-blind, placebo-controlled,
cross-over study measuring the performance of 11 elite cyclists
and triathletes over a six week period and linking variations
in performance to the intake of FRS Plus, a proprietary formula
containing 600mg of flavonoids, including quercetin, green tea
extract and seven key vitamins. Commenting on the Pepperdine results, Dr. Marcus Elliott, M.D.,
a Harvard-trained physician, leader in sports conditioning and
injury prevention consultant for the NFL, as well as an advisor
to New Sun Nutrition, sponsor of the study, comments, "In
almost 20 years of elite athlete conditioning and science, this
is one of the most impressive performance enhancement results
I've encountered." "Short-term intakes of dietary antioxidants have been shown
to counteract the cellular damage caused by free radicals.
In this study, FRS Plus has demonstrated that it can also
increase athletic performance," adds Elliott. "FRS Plus may prove to be not only a performance enhancer for
endurance athletes such as cyclists, runners, swimmers and the
like, but also a powerful long-term protector for any athlete,
helping to alleviate free radical damage caused by exercise." The patented FRS Plus formula was developed in collaboration
with Harvard scientists and was launched by New Sun Nutrition,
a specialist in flavonoid health solutions, in September 2004.
The company is doing additional clinical research on the
potential health benefits of FRS Plus.
