Keith Dowling to Serve as the Race Director for the National Marathon
Greater Washington DC Region to Host a Spring Marathon
By Michelle Mobley November 8, 2005 Washington, DC For the Washington Running Report
The Greater Washington Sports Alliance announces the inaugural
running of the National Marathon. Race participants can look
forward to 26.2 miles of roadways through the Nation's Capital
and Prince George's County MD. The National Marathon debuted at the Marine Corps Marathon expo
to recruit future participants. The first registrant, Gary
Davis, faxed his form in Monday morning at 8:00 am. When asked
why the rush to register, Davis stated, "DC is such a beautiful
city. What better way to enjoy the history and architecture of
DC than a 4 hour tour with a vantage point only available during
a marathon." Keith Dowling will serve as Race Director for the National
Marathon. Dowling ran his career best 2:13:28 to be first
American to cross the finish line at the 2002 Boston Marathon.
Later that year, he ran 2:14:22 for 14th in Chicago. Dowling
will provide monthly training tips for participants on
www.nationalmarathon.com and directly work with the
organizing of the race to ensure a "runners' race." Dowling
said, "We are taking great care to provide a special experience
for each participant--through personalized bibs, hometown press
announcements, and route certification." Dowling will also
recruit internationally for elite runners to participate. The Sports Alliance has worked with city and county officials
for the past two years to design a safe and efficient route in
order to receive the necessary permits and support. Robert
Sweeney, President of the Sports Alliance, spearheaded the
effort. "This will be an annual event that positions the Greater
Washington, DC region in the spotlight of the running
community." A USATF study ranked the region the third largest
nationally amongst runners. Said Sweeney, "The local running
community has been asking for a spring marathon, the National
Marathon will provide this outlet. Additionally, this event will
serve as a qualifier for the 2007 Boston Marathon and
potentially additional championships." The National Marathon is expected to produce an economic impact
of $10.9 million. "The planning and persistence of the Sports
Alliance will be of benefit to the region's economy and most
importantly the local youth organizations that benefit from race
proceeds," noted Fernando Murias, Chairman, Greater Washington
Sports Alliance and Greater Washington Area Managing Partner,
PricewaterhouseCoopers. The 2006 league of charities includes DC
Special Olympics, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington, Fort
DuPont Ice Rink, 16th Annual Black History Swim Meet, D.C.
Scores, and United for D.C.
