32nd Annual Rockville 10K/5K

Perfect Autumn Weather Sees Record Crowds
By James Moreland
November 4, 2007
Rockville, MD
For the Washington Running Report

The Rockville 10K is the longest continuous race in the county. Over the years, the course was run from Montgomery College circling around the campus. In 1992, the course ran down the Pike to downtown Rockville. Then in 1995, the race that had been averaging about 500 runners each year added a 5K. The big draw was airline tickets. Jim Whitnah, then 41, set the standard with 16:19 and the following year outdueled masters runner Peter Kirk 16:04 to 16:09 to reset the record. In 1997, the course moved north to start on Piccard Drive just as the King Farm project was getting underway. Kirk broke free of Joe Abernethy to win by five seconds in 15:58 for the all-time record. The course stayed there until 2002 when it moved to its present location in the center of King Farm. The course did change again in 2004 though it started and finished at the same spot and these are the records listed as current.

On their Web site the women's course record is listed as 37:13 for the old course and 37:47 for the present course (last year when Sintayu Haile beat teen Anya Oleynik by a second). Actually, former Penn State All American Paula Renzi won the 1994 race in 36:51 besting both times. The Masters record was 39:34 (old course) and 40:33 (new course). Today, just after the fifth man crossed the line, the American Masters record holder in the mile, Alisa Harvey (42) of Manassas, VA, changed all that. She crushed both Masters standards and matched exactly the all time Open record of Renzi.

For the men, in the heady days of yore, runners often dipped under the 5:00 pace with Kevin McGarry setting the standard in 1985 with 30:16. Ric Banning's Masters record of 32:19 seems pretty untouchable. Tim Schuler (40) of Chambersburg, PA won the whole shebang in 2003 with a scintillating 33:02. It seems that was a year too early for the present course. Alvin Yew (20) won last year in 34:05 to set the tempo refining his 2005 win in 34:06. For the masters, Mark Malander won a photo finish 34:25 to set the present standard. Last year Andrea Wright (39) of Frederick, MD came onto the scene quickly making 5K history in 16:19. This year he tagged the 10K with a course setting 33:52. Allen Carr (24) of Herndon, VA (in photo) wiped out the course Open record with a swift 32:29.

To make matters wrong for Wright (in photo), Greg Jubb (17) of College Park, MD became the best 5K finisher on the present course, winning in 16:02. For the Open women, Sarah Spalding (26) of Washington, DC made mincemeat of the old record set by Kristen Ettensohn in 18:45. Spalding was more than a minute ahead of the runner-up with a swift 18:07 (for the present course). Gretchen Triantos (45) of Rockville, MD ran by far the fastest masters 5K back in 2002 at King Farm, winning in 19:26. She also began her masters debut winning the 5K outright in 18:04 the first year the course was run on Piccard (1997), so it is unclear what the records listed on their site pertain to. (They list Lorraine Ross's 21:12 win as the record). Triantos appears to be both the Open and the Masters record holders.

The race continues to grow and this year they pulled away from their 500-600 range combined finishers to get to nearly 1000. Gorgeous weather helped the scores of volunteers, course marshals, and water stop personnel guide many runners to fast times. The course meanders back and forth across King Farm and even with no real hills the topography is not smooth enough for great times. Still, the wind died down and with low humidity, it was perfect racing weather.

The Rockville Triple Series combines the Pike's Peek 10K, Rotary Twilight 8K, and the Rockville 10K. For the women, Alisa Harvey pounced on the masters, winning all three races. She was third in the Open division in the first two races. When the other two did not show, Harvey's win clinched the Open win as well. For the men, Allen Carr was in fourth place in a close battle. None of the other five runners in contention showed and the title goes to Carr with his victory here. Andres Wright had a win and a runner-up; adding another win clinched the title. David Haaga closed to second place but could not top him.

After the race, runners hung around for lots of good eating. The fare included the usual fruits and bottled water but restaurants opened up stands to deliver more substantial chow. Baja Fresh did real well with enchiladas, rice, and beans. There was ice cream and Cokes for the sweet tooth. The awards went two deep in five year age groups, which made for a lot of happy runners. The awards included a sweatshirt to go along with the runner's backpack and T-shirt that everyone got. Also, winners got dinner for two from the always tasty Hard Times Cafe.

The race is also the ninth race in the Maryland State RRCA Championship Series.
