18th Annual Army 10-Miler 2002

Over eighteen minutes had passed on the clock when the last
runner crossed the starting line of the 18th annual Army
10-Miler. More than 18,400 runners, a record number, registered
for
the 2002 race. Around 12,000, also a record number, lined up at
the start. Last year's Army 10-Miler was canceled because of
security concerns following September 11, 2001. This year the
sniper threatens the DC metro area. But record numbers still
came out. The weather was close to ideal, with cool temperatures
and an overcast sky.
Runners from the Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP)
dominated the military open men's team competition and the race
itself. WCAP claimed the top four spots overall. Ryan
Kirkpatrick won first place in 48:35; Scott Goff came in second
in 49:06; and Christopher England took third in 49:13.
Kirkpatrick said of his team, "We came here with five athletes
to show what elite runners in the US Army can do." Of the top ten men, seven are members of the Army, including the
top two men from 2000, Sammy Ngatia (first in 2000) and Teddy
Mitchell (second in 2000). Mitchell came in seventh in 50:20;
Ngatia took ninth place in 51:17 and claimed first place in the
master's men competition. Mitchell and Ngatia's team, Fort
Carson Men's Team, took second place in the military open men's
tem competition. The DCRRC took first place in the civilian
men's team competition.
The top three women are civilians. Casey Smith finished first in
58:21. After the race, she said, "I didn't know I would be
here." She was expecting to get on the Metro immediately after
finishing and head home. She discovered that she was ahead
between miles two and three; "I heard some people yelling 'first
woman!'." Maybe she needn't be so surprised. After all, she was
ranked fourth in the region's open women category in spring
2002. Martha Merz took second place overall and first place in
the masters women category in 59:49. She moved to Mystic, CT in
1999 but regularly returns to Washington, DC to run road
races; "I miss [running here]. It is nice to come back."
Elizabeth Scanlon came in third in 1:00:19. She used the10-Miler
as a tune up for the Marine Corps Marathon, which she is running
on October 28.Team USAREUR Women grabbed first place by a solid eight minutes
with a combined time of 4:26:53, in the military open women's
team competition. Fort Bragg Women were second in 4:34:53. In
the civilian open women's team competition, Washington RunHers
Sole Sisters took first place. As always, the Army 10-Miler was a well-organized and lively
race. There is no prize money for the top finishers, but, as
Casey Smith said, "[It is] great to run a race just in support
of the US Army" and not for any monetary award.
