3rd Annual Wings Over Loudoun 10K
Photos by Rick & Kathy Freedman October 27, 2002 Leesburg, VA For the Washington Running Report
On a beautiful fall Sunday, more than 200 runners converged in
Leesburg, Virginia to run the Wings Over Loudoun 10K and 1 Mile
Fun Run. Chilly early morning temperatures quickly gave way to
warmth as the sun rose over the horizon. Loudoun Country Day
School hosted the event, and proceeds from the run benefit the
school's athletic programs and the American Cancer Society.
After Hunter Morrison, an
eighth-grade student at LCDS, led the assembled
runners in the Pledge of Allegiance and then sang the Star
Spangled Banner, 10K runners took off up Fairview Street to
skirt the edges of Leesburg on rural roads and traverse a
section of the W&OD Trail.Shortly after the start of the 10K, more than 50 fun runners of
all ages lined up for their one mile dash around the
neighborhood and into the finish, earning ribbons as they
crossed the line. Leesburg resident Brian Schmidt (top photo) won the 10K race in
33:46, and Todd Martin of Herndon was less than a minute behind.
Another Herndon resident, George Buckheit, took third place with
his 35:10 performance, and was the first masters division
finisher.
In the women's race, Sterling's Caroline Tynan (photo left) ran
unchallenged throughout the race and ran away with the victory
in 36:18. Second-place finisher Sue Waldo of Ashburn was almost
eight minutes behind in a very respectable time of 44:01 (net
43:55). Another Leesburg resident, Martha Cammack, placed third
just nine seconds later. Some notable age-group performances: Patrick Griffith (57) of
Alexandria was seventh overall with a remarkable 38:29. Daniel
Callan (14) Berryville, VA was first in the 13-15 division with
his 42:41. Twelve-year-old Phil Marshall of Round Hill, VA, was
the first LCDS student in the 10K, finishing in 55:52.
Columbia's John Elliott, about to turn 65,
ran 40:16, beating everyone except Patrick Griffith in the next
lower age group. On the women's side, nine-year-old Bridget
Werner of Sterling was the only finisher in the 10 and under
division, running 68:06 for the 10K. Race Director Ruth Marshall said she started this event to
inspire children to run, and she was pleased to see so many
children participate in the two events. The AMS team made a strong showing at the race with more than 30
employees registered, and fourth-place finisher Warren Kohm of
McLean (photo below) leading the way with a time of 35:45.
