Calling All Kids for the 15th Annual Halloween Young Run
From MCRRC
October 2, 2003
For the Washington Running Report

Just for Kids 12 and Under- Register by October 22
The Montgomery County Road Runners Club (MCRRC) will present the 15th annual "Halloween Young Run" on Sunday, November 2, 2003, at 9:00 am on West Gude Drive (at Route 355), Rockville, MD. This highly successful event, which has grown from 200 runners in its first year to 3,000, is one of the largest children's runs in the country.

The Halloween Young Run is the final event in MCRRC's annual children's running program - an innovative program designed to encourage fitness and fun for young children. For the kids, it's a "real road race" on the roads, with banners, balloon arch, aerobic warm-up, and a professional finish line. Since fitness is the primary objective of children's running, every child wears a "1" bib number and each and everyone is a winner! Children from the entire metro area will be running with the largest group coming from the Montgomery County area through their school training program. Each runner can track their training by downloading an individual training log from our web site: www.mcrrc.org and click on the pumpkin icon.

There will be 1/4, 1/2, and 1-mile runs for kids 12 and under. All events are non-competitive. Ribbons will be given to all 1/4 and 1/2 mile finishers and medals will be given to all 1-mile finishers. Awards will be given to schools with 20% or more participation. Many schools will be vying for the coveted School Spirit Award - so bring your school banners and supporters and show your school spirit! Approximate times for events to start are: 9:00 a.m. - 1 mile; 10 a.m. - 1/2 mile; and 10:15 a.m. - 1/4 mile with multiple heats for each event. The race will be held rain or shine.

All interested runners need to tell their parents to register them soon. Registration is by mail-in only and must be postmarked by Wednesday, October 22, 2003. There is no in- person or late registration so don't delay. Applications are available on the web site or by calling the MCRRC Club Line at (301) 353-0200.

The event is sponsored by Congressional Plaza, Whole Foods Market and Drink More Water. It is conducted in cooperation with the City of Rockville Recreation and Parks Department and the Montgomery County Public Schools.

Race proceeds will benefit the City of Rockville's Youth Recreation Fund and Healthy Families Montgomery.
