2500 Kids Running in 15th Annual Halloween Young Run
From the official press release
October 31, 2003
Rockville, MD
For the Washington Running Report

Running the Halloween Young Run is to kids like a marathon is to adults--"A true accomplishment." That will be evident this Sunday, November 2, in Rockville, Maryland, as 2500 plus registered runners will be lining up to run in this year's event. The 15th annual Halloween Young Run is presented by the Montgomery County Road Runners Club (MCRRC) especially for kids!

They're coming from all over the area, with the majority from Montgomery County. Some trained with their families, friends, and even at school. One runner, a five-year-old girl, is coming from New Hampshire to run her first 1/2 mile event. There is no geographic boundary, just one requirement--age 12 and under.

At the Halloween Young Run you'll see adults dressed in Halloween attire but not the kids. "Fitness is Fun" and that's the emphasis used to promote fitness through running. "Everyone's a Winner" with every child wearing a number "1" bib.

The event features three distances: 1/4 Mile, 1/2 Mile and 1 Mile. The course, on West Gude Drive at Route 355, is completely closed to traffic. Upon completing their special event, 1/4 & 1/2 mile runners will receive a ribbon and 1 milers will receive a medal. While registration is closed, spectators are encouraged to come out and cheer for the kids. Starting times (approximate) for the events are as follows: 1 Mile at 9:00 am, 1/2 Mile at 10:00 am, and 1/4 Mile at 10:15 am. Additional information can be found on the MCRRC web site: www.mcrrc.org (click on the pumpkin).

For the young runners it's only the beginning, but for the adults it's a glimpse into the future of the sport. Show your support for our youngest runners as they set out to achieve their goal.
