Charm City Kicks Off Local Marathon Season
The Baltimore Running Festival

The fourth Baltimore Marathon proved itself to be a sprawling
affair, with thousands of runners taking part in the marathon, a
marathon relay, a half marathon, and a 5K. Afterward, runners
and spectators regrouped at "Celebration Village," where music,
food, and friends took precedence over exhaustion for all but
the marathoners, who were prominent and pitiable in their foil
blankets.But even those longest of distance runners were well satisfied
after their whirlwind tour of Charm City. The race started near
Ravens Stadium and after tracing three separate loops in the
city finished near Oriole Park at Camden Yards, just off Eutaw
Street, where left-handed sluggers send baseballs to die. In between, the course toured dozens of neighborhoods and sites,
including Federal Hill, Canton, and Little Italy near the Inner
Harbor, and Druid Hill, Johns Hopkins, Waverly and Lake
Montebelo in the northern half. Crowds along the course were
surprisingly plentiful and supportive; the weather, although
cool and breezy, generally behaved so that all but the last few
marathoners were spared the midday showers.
With a prize purse of $100,000, the supporting cast of runners
was bound to be good, and John Itati, from Philadelphia via
Kenya, and Ramilya Burangulova from Russia did not disappoint.
But early on, the men's race looked to be a rout, with Mikhail
Minyukhin from Russian running well in front the trailing pack
of six Kenyans. "I could not see [Minyukhin] at 10 miles," said Itati, who has
won the last four Pennsylvania Avenue Miles in Washington. "I
was not so much worried about him, he was too far ahead, by two
minutes. But by 13 miles, I hear we are trailing by one minute
20 seconds, and I know we are getting closer, little by little." Itati, running alone by Mile 18, caught Minyukhin (photo above)
on the uphill
climb toward Clifton Park and quickly put distance between his
fading but still game competitor. After passing the old Memorial
Stadium site--now a condominium complex--on 33rd Street, the
course heads downhill the last three miles toward downtown, and
Itati put an exclamation point on his fine run, crossing the
finish line in 2 hours 14 minutes 51 seconds. Fred Getange, from Kenya, took second in 2:16:33, and Minyukhin
hung on for third in 2:17:00. Wilson Komen, winner of the Pike's
Peek 10K in Rockville last spring, finished fourth in 2:17:31. "I almost caught the Russian," Komen said, "so that was good.
Early in the race, we thought he was gone."
Burangulova won with a big move at eight miles and crossed the
finish line first in 2:40:21. Fellow Russian Victoria Zueva took
second in 2:41:31. Early leader Wioletta Kryza (below, #31) from
Poland was third in 2:41:53. "Ramilya is capable of running 2:35," said her coach. "But she
was confident of winning today once she got past the Polish
girl." Legally blind runner Susan Graham Gray from Greencastle, PA
(below, #29),
finished fourth in 2:52:57, and Lee DiPietro, 46, from Ruxton,
MD, second overall in 2003, finished fifth, just seven seconds
behind. "I was trying to run smart," DiPietro said (below, #34). "I
started with the
lead pack, but they took off before 13 miles. With the wind and
the hills in the second half, I knew I had to let them go."
