One of the Largest Local Thanksgiving Day Runs
Virginia Run community volunteers will stage a Thanksgiving tradition on November 25th at 8:00 am--the 16th Annual Virginia Run Turkey Trot 5K & 2K Walk.

The Trot includes a USATF-certified 5K running course as well as a 2K walking course. Each route travels through the Virginia Run community at Route 29 and Pleasant Valley Road in Centreville.

All proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit Life with Cancer, Inova Health System's non-profit program for cancer patients and their families. This year's the event is dedicated to two Virginia Run residents who have died from cancer, James "Ken" Moore, Sr. and Mary Graham. "It is very special for our family to have Ken honored in this way by the community. We are so pleased to be a part of raising funds for individuals and families affected by cancer," comments Mrs. Moore.

The event has benefited the cancer program for 12 years. During that time, Life with Cancer has become a well- established support program; the 2003 Turkey Trot donated $35,000 donation to the charity from sponsors and participants.

Community volunteers have set a fundraising goal of $40,000 for 2004. Top supporters to date include: Carteret Mortgage, Odyssey Travel, Luck Stone, Northern Virginia Oncology Group, Mitchell Eye Institute and Glory Days Grill. To donate via cash or raffle items, contact Bob Donnelley at 703-830-1179.

The event is open to everyone and features morning exercise in brisk weather before the Thanksgiving feast at home. Last year over 1,800 runners and 750 walkers participated.

Registration is available online at Sign Me Up Sports. Entry fee before November 21st is $20 for the run and $13 for the walk. There is no race day registration for the run. Each participant receives a long sleeve t-shirt, post race snacks and an opportunity to participate in a raffle.

Prizes are awarded to top two male and female overall finishers and top Virginia Run residents. In addition, the top two men and women in the following age categories will receive prizes: 10 and under, 11-14, 15-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 & Over.
