Washington Running Report Ten Mile Triple Ends With No Cash Payout
By George Banker October 27, 2005 Washington, DC For the Washington Running Report
The 2005 season of the Washington Running Report Ten-Mile Triple
had the added incentive of offering $2,000 to any male or female
who won all three events during the Ten-Mile Triple season.
Capital Running Company was offering the bonus.
The mission of the series was to recognize the performance of
the local runners. In addition to offering the cash bonus the
winners received complimentary entries into the other events.
The non-transferable entries were awarded to the first local
male and female in the open and master's category. The local
area was defined as the states of Maryland and Virginia and the
District of Columbia.

21st Army Ten-Miler 10/2/05
The Army Ten-Miler was aborted shortly after crossing 4th and
Independence Avenue, the 7-mile mark. Earlier the DC
Metropolitan Harbor Police spotted a suspicious package under
the 14th Street Bridge. The all clear was not given by the time
the runners had reached 14th and Independence Avenue (mile 7
3/4)
where they were suppose to turn to access the HOV lanes for the
return to the Pentagon.
The runners stayed in the westbound lanes of Independence Avenue
to return back to the Pentagon by way of the Memorial Bridge.
The runners finished at the original start line a distance of
about 11.5 miles. The decision was based upon safety for the
runners. There were no times for the runners. The first male to
return was the 1999 winner (48:20) Chris Graff of Arlington, VA.
His best 10-mile time to date is 47:02. The first female was
Samia Akbar, Herndon, VA, an American University graduate and
decorated runner and 2003 NCAA Outdoor Track All-American. She
holds five indoor and three outdoor school records. Akbar placed
10th in the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run in 57:40.
The cash bonus was not collected for the series.
The Ten-Mile Triple will start in April 2006 with the 34th
Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run, Sunday, April 2, 2006.
