Start of the 2004 Veterans Day 10K

Veterans Day 10K to Benefit Returning Troops
Wounded in Conflict

From the official press release
October 21, 2005
Washington, DC
For the Washington Running Report

Capital Running Company is pleased to announce that the 6th Annual Veterans Day 10K on Sunday, November 6, will benefit Helping Our Heroes Foundation, a Virginia-based nonprofit that aids returning troops wounded in conflict.

The race, with more than 2,000 participants expected, starts at 8 am on Sunday, November 6, in West Potomac Park, just south of the Lincoln Memorial, near the Tidal Basin and FDR Memorial in Washington, DC, and across the river from the Pentagon. Runners, both civilian and military, come from all over the DC area and 24 states.

All registrants receive long-sleeved, 100% cotton t-shirts with a colorful, patriotic design. Food and hot beverages will be provided following the race for all participants and volunteers, and refreshments will be provided on course near the two and four-mile marks, and at the start/finish lines. The certified racecourse is an out-and-back from along Ohio Drive to the tip of Hains Point. The course is flat and fast.

DC Group hosts the race, and Capital Running Company directs it. For information about the race or to pre-enter before October 25, see the race Web site or call the race hotline at (301) 871-0400. Register on-line and receive an instant confirmation of your entry.

Awards for this race include a cash purse for the top ten men and women, and gift certificates or merchandise prizes for the top three in five-year age groups from 19 and under to 80 and above. Form a team of up to ten runners and enter the coed team competition. The first five runners score, and at least one of the five must be of the opposite sex.

Packet pickup and on-site registration will be held Friday, November 4, from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm and on Saturday, November 5, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm, at the Hyatt Arlington Hotel, 1325 Wilson Boulevard, one block from the Rosslyn Metro Station. On race day morning, packet pickup begins at 6:30 am near the start/finish line in West Potomac Park.

A special room rate of $89 per night has been arranged at the Hyatt Arlington hotel for race participants. Reservations must be made by Friday, October 28, 2005. Runners may call (800) 233-1234 and specify "Hyatt Arlington" and "Veterans Day 10K" to receive the special rate.

The race benefits Helping Our Heroes Foundation, which provides a way for donated funds and services to reach injured military personnel directly and a way for concerned Americans to volunteer to actively support our armed forces.

HOHF funds programs and organizes volunteers to complement the casework administered by Disabled Soldier Support System (DS3) employees. HOHF works with qualified soldiers who need support from the Office of the DS3 Chief, whose caseworkers maintain contact with each injured soldier. HOHF provides mentors and patient advocates, identifies and funds educational opportunities for soldiers, coordinates specialty counseling (financial assistance, career, housing, etc.), and assists with emergency funding needs.

Among HOHF's programs are "Hire a Hero" Career Nights at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, open to anyone injured from service in either OIF/OEF, where those who have decided to choose another career path after their service are introduced to potential employers who have openings and are ready to hire.

Major sponsors of the race include National Association of Broadcasters, General Dynamics, Raytheon, American Physical Therapy Association, Fran O'Brien's Steak House, DC Group Inc., Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, Pearson Government Solutions, StillSecure, World Wide Technology Inc., Coca Cola/Powerade, Hooah Energy Bars, Washington Sports Club, and more to come.
