PACE Race DC 5K
By James Moreland

Washington, DC

Glorious fall replaced yesterday's fearsome winds with picture perfect running conditions. The course is a speedy out and back starting in West Potomac Park and returning from halfway down the river side of East Potomac Park. Last year the course was in Bethesda so this third race already has two different courses. Third place Ted Poulos (44) of McLean, VA was also third place in the 2004 but was a no show last year. Poulos really likes this course as it was the scene of his 5K PR overall win in 15:48 at the Freddie Mac 5K back in 1999.

Poulos [photo left] was thirty-seven that year. The sub master gunslinger this year is Max Lockwood (35) of Washington, DC. He darted away from the field. Note in the start photo that he is on his third foot strike as all the other frontrunners were still settling on number two. A pack of five gave chase but even as they crossed the Inlet River Bridge one fifth of the race done, the race was really over. By mile two Lockwood had pulled away to a more than sixty meter lead. He looked relaxed and maybe a little surprised that it was going to be that easy for him to win today with 16:37. The trail pack was still tight and Poulos looked real serious. With more than 1000 career wins and fifty-one of them so far this year, he drives until he crosses the mat. As with many of the races these days, a lot of the runners are older. Poulos rarely gets caught there.

Stuart Pineo (45) of Columbia, MD fell back five seconds in 17:23 for fourth place, which earned him first in that age group. Poulos joins him in the new age group on the sixth of December. Scott Forest (40) of Springfield, VA joins the masters division in fifth with 17:29. Alex Grant (38) of Washington, DC trailed in sixth with 17:45. None of those four had the legs to hold off young Devin Lyons-Quirk (23) of Arlington, VA as he took runner-up honors in 17:10.

For the women, 23-year-old Loretta Kilmer [photo left] is so new to the scene we did not even have a hometown for her. Favorite Sarah Spalding (25) of Washington, DC had a fine 6:00 pace 18:39 for second. Kilmer made a racing statement with win in 18:23.

A rare out of towner for this size race, Megan Fogerty (22) of Newport News, VA showed some southern Virginia style, racing home in 19:10. From the state's capital teenager Carrie Wortham (17) was a close fourth in 19:22. After that it was the masters. Win Persina (46) of Washington, DC is healthy and ready to take a crack at a sub 19:00 5K. She rushed out a little fast today, just under 6:00 at the mile, and reigned in for the top masters spot and the second best age graded performance of all the runners.

That top spot went to the next runner, Debbie Flynn (50) Gaithersburg, MD. Last year she was Persina's nemesis in the 45-49 division. Today, she missed the grandmaster best of 2006 time with her 20:06 by one second. Her chip time was 20:04. Look out Betty Blank and Alison Suckling! Seventh place went Laeticia Warring (43) of Reston, VA in 20:36.

All of these age group winners were minutes ahead of the rivals in the division. With the grandmaster men, it was a little different. Tom Clark [photo left] with his graying beard was scaring everyone including the runners as far back as the 65-69 division. They were not sure which of the grandmaster divisions he would win. Clark of Burke, VA is fifty-two and ran a very strong 19:40. Right on his heels Kevin Finneran (57) of Washington, DC took the next division in 19:46.

Last year only one grandmaster runner broke 22:03. This year one woman, six 50-54 men, two 55-59 men, and two 65-69 men broke that time. The 65-69 men was so competitive that Chan Robbins (69) of Arlington, VA with an amazing 22:13 was third in his division, albeit 5th overall age graded in the race. Gary Berg- Cross (63) of Potomac, MD ran 22:32 to win his division, while Maynard Weyers (70) of Alexandria, VA churned home in 23:06 to ward of the soon to be seventy Robbins.

After the race, runners rallied around food tent drinking hot coffee and guzzling cool Propel sports drink. The bagels were extra fresh with Philadelphia Cream Cheese. There were also many other snacks to make a hungry stomach smile. The goodie bag included two race shirts as well as a neat drawstring close bag and lots of little knick knacks inside. The weather stayed glorious as runners listened for the awards, three deep in five year age groups with $25 gifts for the winners. The many randoms included a $200 Savings Bond and dinner for two at Joe Theisman's Restaurant.

Before the race started, they played the National Anthem without the words. It was really swell to hear most of the runners join in and provide the words to our stirring anthem. The next race will plan to have a professional singer to lead the chorus. Our cheerful announcer at the finish line and the awards, Judy Floy, made a special effort to keep runners informed about the serious nature of the race's purpose. That is making people aware that prostate cancer if detected early is nearly always curable.

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer found in American men, after skin cancer. Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, second only to lung cancer. The death rate for prostate cancer is going down. And the disease is being detected earlier, according to the American Cancer Society. Early prostate cancer usually does not have any symptoms, so testing is very important to detect the disease. Come out and help support prostate cancer education and research by running or walking in this race.

Max Lockwood (35) of Washington, DC notched another win on his belt.
