The Kids Are Alright

Youngsters (and Wardian) Dominate Page's 5K

In photo above, Michael Wardian (#4) gets busy as the race begins.

On a perfect fall morning, a record 510 runners, many of them decidedly less grizzled than the usual road racing crowd, celebrated the life of Kimberly "Page" Whetsell at the third Page's Run 5K in Potomac, MD. The event, which raises money for cystic fibrosis research, is a grass-roots community event hosted at Winston Churchill High School and staffed by enthusiastic parents, teachers, coaches, and members of the school's athletic teams.

Uber-racer Michael Wardian, one week off a solid 2-hours 30- minutes 5-second effort at the Twin Cities Marathon and three weeks prior to running his second Olympic trials marathon in New York, took top honors over the hilly neighborhood streets. Wardian (33) from Arlington, VA won in a course-record 15:37; he maintained a small gap throughout the race over runner-up Chad Young (photo), who ran 15:42.

"He kept me honest the whole way," Wardian said of Young. "Only when I looked back on the track [in the last 100 meters] did I feel for sure I had him beat."

Young (26) from Bethesda, MD was gunning for his fourth straight win after the Back to School Classic 8K, an alumni race in Pennsylvania, and Ellen's Run 5K last weekend. "I tried to come out and compete," Young said. "I was either going to win or get broken."

The two ran together until Wardian pushed the pace uphill in the final mile. "He dropped back," Wardian said, "and I kept hammering it the rest of the way. I was thinking about that woman in Chicago [at the October 7 marathon, who waved her arms in the final 50 meters only to be caught and passed at the tape], and knew that I couldn't celebrate until I crossed the finish line."

Defending champion Anya Oleynik (19) from Gaithersburg, MD and a graduate of nearby Quince Orchard High School, allowed no such drama in the women's race. Oleynik left Lena Finucane (16) from Chambersburg, PA on the first downhill and won going away in 19:07. "She pulled ahead," Finucane said, "but I kept her in view." Finucane took second in 20:09.

Oleynik, a second-year pre-med student at George Washington University, was pleased with her effort but not with her time. "That's slower than last year," she said. "But I've haven't been training all that well."

Lucy Fitch (44) from Potomac, MD (in photo) won the women's masters race in 21:48.

A raft of teenagers peppered the results. Zach Sullivan (17) from Pasadena, MD led them all-even the dozen or so kids who sprinted the first 100 meters-and finished fifth overall in 17:08. Mike and Rob Bock (both 17) from Wheaton, MD finished 10th and 11th overall.

Carly Yoo (17), a tennis player at Churchill and regular road racer, knocked nearly 21/2 minutes off her time from last year and finished 13th overall in 23:35.

A kid's quarter-mile fun run on the track commenced the morning's festivities. Cheerleaders, music, pizza, and WJLA news anchor Leon Harris highlighted the post-race party and awards ceremony, at which six $5,000 scholarships were awarded, along with many random awards.
