Stone Ridge 5K Run for Education

Fall Splendor Serves Up a Perfect Racing Weather Day
By James Moreland
October 13, 2007
Stone Ridge, VA
For the Washington Running Report

"It's a family affair."

Last year, in its first year, the race was blessed with good weather. The course was a well chosen figure eight through the well-manicured community of Stone Ridge. Including the 1K fun run, there were nearly 600 participants. The main event, if we can say that, was a fast 5K with just enough rolls to give runners a quasi-legitimate excuse for not getting a personal record (PR). There were more women than men and nearly 100 of the 336 finishers had not reached the age of 20. With cash awards for the top three overall, the race drew some fast runners. Gurmesa Kumsa set the course standard with a blazing 14:56 with Jacqueline Gruendel racing tops in 17:53 for the women. More than half of top 25 men were indeed boys and a quarter of the top women were girls.

This year, the weather went from a horrid 94 degrees last week and followed a windy Friday into an absolutely perfect fall racing morning. Even competing with 25 other area races, this second year event swelled to more than 880 participants. With this course and the way the race treats its runners, it is a virtual certainty that the race will make 1000 plus in its third year. The course was very well marked with lots of enthusiastic volunteers marshalling the way for the racers. Police made sure traffic was never an issue. The mile markers were dead on and there were two water stops. Joyfully, the last 500 meters is downhill and runners came screaming down around the last curve set on making that ChampionChip beep.

Even before the race started, the Daily Grind was out there with coffee for those runners surprised by the 40 degree drop in temperature. After the race, there were bagels, bananas, doughnuts, Gatorade, and plenty of water. There was Karate demonstrations and tumbling along with the cheerleading squad. Local schools vied for the honor of the most participation. No one on the course could miss their boisterous cheering in the middle of the race. There was face painting for the largest group (youngsters) in the race.

While the top 25 for the racers included only ten percent younger than 20 this year, both men and women had a teen in the money. Gruendel (in photo) returned to defend her title but she slowed enough this year so that the race was not over till the very end. Maggie Gentry (16) of Nokesville, VA finished just 12 seconds behind her in 18:24. Last year, Gruendel's margin was more than a minute. Robyn Ellerbrock (22) of Washington, DC was third in 18:43.

Anita Freres (42) of Reston, VA was fourth again this year. Last year she was behind masters record holder Kelly Dworak's 19:18. Early in the race, Win Persina (47) of Washington, DC had moved past her, but Freres settled in after the first mile to take command, winning in 19:58. Persina normally runs a very even pace but slipped back to 7th in 20:53. Elizabeth Starr (51) of Aldie, VA had an easy time as the top grandmaster, setting the record with 23:11. Only six women in the race were older than 50.

For the men, Allen Carr (24) of Herndon, VA was dominant. He had already won a 5K outright in the summer as well as a second place at the Harris Teeter Leesburg 10K in 31:45. His spiffy 15:18 now stands as the second fastest time ever on the course. Charles Riley (21) of Washington, DC did not have it so easy. He had to do battle with young 16-year-old Dante Morales of Fairfax, VA. Riley just did nip him at the finish line by a second in 16:13.

Last year, six runners broke 17 minutes, including masters champion Carl Clark who ran 16:56.

This year, places 5-7 were all masters runners and all close together. Ted Poulos (45) of McLean, VA has the experience with more than 3,000 races run in his career. He is a finisher. He dipped under 18 minutes with a very solid 17:53 to win the masters. George Lane (41) Ashburn, VA (in photo) was next in 18:05 to win his five-year age group. The third master was Craig Greene (42) of Manassas, VA. Greene is a middle distance runner (800M, 1500M) but the long, lanky frame (6'2" and 160 pounds) is well suited to road racing as well. With a nationally ranked coach (Alisa Harvey) and a little motivation, expect Greene to move up in the Runner Rankings.

Last year, the grandmasters field was very competitive. Mike Hart won the 50-54 in a nifty 18:06. Though Jason Page was the only runner in the 60-64 division, there was no doubt that this number one ranked senior would be tops. Only he was dissatisfied with his sparkling time of 19:11. Allen Vaughan won the 55-59 division in 20:39. In this second year, James Moreland was gifted as these top runners all stayed home this year. He huffed and puffed his way to a grandmaster best with 21:24.

Two runners in their 70s took the top placing in the 65 & over division. This leads one to believe that with a 70-74 and perhaps a 75-79 division we can get some older runners to join the youngsters and their families at this growing race. October 12th Walt Washburn of Vienna, VA turned 85. Washburn still races 25 times a year. As recently as 2005, this three time American record holder in the 80-84 division has run 60 races in a year.
