William and Mary Homecoming Run 5K

College of William and Mary
By Rick Platt
October 22, 2005
Williamsburg, VA
For the Washington Running Report

A Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix Event

Adam Otstot, 23, of Williamsburg, an assistant track and cross country coach at William and Mary, won the men's title at the annual William and Mary Homecoming Run 5K, with a time of 15:57. Derek Storbeck, 22, of Hampton, victorious the past two weeks at the Harvest Day 5K (York River State Park in Williamsburg) and the Hilton 5K (Newport News) was runner-up this week, with a time of 16:07. Rob Hinkle, 41, of Yorktown was third in 16:10, eight seconds ahead of 2005 Colonial Road Runners Grand Prix leader Mark Tompkins, 30, of Newport News. Despite the loss, Tompkins clinched this year's CRR Grand Prix, as he has an 11- point lead, 92-81, over Hinkle, with one race to go (the Governor's Land 5K on Nov. 19 in Williamsburg) in the 12-race series.

Cassie Stilley, 28, of Hayes, also an assistant track and cross country coach (at Christopher Newport University) won by over a minute for the women with a time of 18:37, over the trio of Emily Webb, 16, of Gloucester (19:40), Lynn Hurd, 24, of Williamsburg (a PR 19:41) and Valerie Plyler, 46, of Yorktown (19:43).

The race was organized for the first year by the Walsingham Academy Athletic Department, with co-race directors Mark Tompkins (4th for the men in 16:18) and Lynn Hurd, the two Walsingham cross-country coaches.

Noteworthy age-group performances were turned in by Dan Murray, 60, of Keswick, VA (an all-time Colonial Road Runners record for men 60-64 of 18:57, breaking the previous mark of 19:25 by Bob Spencer, 60, of Williamsburg at the 2002 William and Mary Homecoming Run), by Steve Chantry, 50, of Williamsburg (a 16:48, close to his all-time CRR men's 50-54 mark of 16:41 from May's 5K Run for Mental Health), by Heidi Peterson, 11 of Williamsburg (a PR 21:19 to win the women's 19-and-under age group), and by Dakota McManus, 9, of Williamsburg (a PR 22:13 for second place in the same age group for the training partner of Heidi Peterson).

The course is a challenging one, with five hills on the course that tours the College of William and Mary campus, and includes numerous turns.
