Germantown 5-Miler
By James Moreland with photos by Kathy Freedman May 21, 2005 Germantown, MD For the Washington Running Report
Let's get this race started! Chris Banks (#12) and Michael
Wardian (#1) begin their duel
This year's May may be the strangest for changes in
temperatures. It has been extra cool and extra dry until Friday
erupted with full-scale rain. Still, when Saturday morning began
the 3rd Annual Germantown 5 Miler was greeted with picture
perfect race running weather. Only fluffy white clouds
surrounded by bright blue skies. With little wind and 55
degrees, runners would be arriving at the finish line with
smilingly fast times.Event record holder Erik Kean (24:45) was not there but first
year runner-up Chris Banks (24:55) was there to keep last year's
winner Michael Wardian (25:14) company for his title defense.
They ran shoulder to shoulder for a good part of the race. At
the end, Banks slid by to win by about fifteen meters 25:17 to
25:22. Hot shot Aaron Church (in photo) of South Riding,
VA just finishing
a couple swift 5Ks, including last week's Plaza America Family
5K was third in a swift 25:50.
Notice that this Germantown, MD race drew the first seven men
from Virginia and Pennsylvania. Masters Champion Tim Schuler
of Chambersburg, PA run so many races in the are that he could
qualify as one of the grandfathered runners considered in the
Runner Rankings. His swift 27:16 knocks more than a minute off
last year's master record time by Jean-Chris Arcaz of 28:21.
Young Paris Caballero (22) of Gaithersburg, MD is a thoroughbred
who will be jockeying for even better times than his 27:41 once
he gets some more seasoning. George Buckheit of Fairfax, VA just turned 48 and in
the last couple of years seems to have a new lease on his
running. His flashy 27:53 bumps off Dan Lawson course record
(28:34) for the age group. These guys will be lining up soon for
the grandmasters coronation if Chuck Moeser fools his faithful
and really has retired. The king is dead; long live the king.
Down in Williamsburg, VA prince in waiting Rick Platt was
salivating over the demise of Moeser. That is until Stephen
Chantry (50) also of that colonial Ville and a recent 2:13 800-
meter is also a pretender to the throne. Yet I digress, as Paul
Peterson (51)(the bearded one behind Brian Lesko (#152) of
Frederick, MD) of Bethesda, MD flashes across the
finish line.
Lucky thirteenth overall's time of 29:39 broke his own
grandmasters course record and throws his hat into the ring. Patrick Griffith of Alexandria, VA relentlessly pushes aside
another course record. He owns the 55-59 record of 30:38, which
he set two years ago. He will never touch that record. Mostly
because he is now sixty and torched a fine runner Lou Shapiro's
record by almost two minutes with his 30:53 finish.
For the women, the top six runners were divided evenly between
Maryland and Virginia. All were under thirty minutes. Living in
Germantown, Olga Romanova easily handled the field that included
two top six ranked runners, Mary Kate Bailey and Jill Krebs.
Romanova's five-mile time of 28:02 bested second place Heather
Hanscom and Krebs by more than two hundred meters. Both were sub
sixty-minute ten milers at Cherry Blossom. Krebs reset her own
course record for 20-24 women with a fast 29:03. Younger women owned the top nine spots. Then bang, bang, bang
three top masters running dueled for the crown. All three were
under Jane Wikman's course 40-44 record of 35:35. None busted
the masters record set by Debbie Flynn (46) of 34:34 in 2003.
Frederick's blonde racing star, Bev Black (in photo) won
the day in 35:00.
Marcie Knapp of Dickerson coming off an age group win at this
month's Frederick marathon in 3:32:23 was next twelve seconds
later. The eldest of the three, Beth McCann (45), now of
Germantown, MD won her five-year division coming in one second
behind Knapp.
Alice Franks of Rockville, MD racing 36:36 owned the grand
masters winning by more than two minutes over the 50-54 and
more than three minutes in her five year division, just a few
strides off her own course record 36:13. Carole Kammel (on
photo left) finishes third in her age group with 36:03. At
seventy-four Lee Glassco took a serious last shot at her 70-74
record 62:04, running 62:13. Next year she should put paid
to the 75 and over record. This year Race Director Danny Talmage (photo below) of
Germantown, MD shows he is just more than a pretty face,
finishing in 40th place in 35:40.
