A Successful Defense
Ben Cooke of Silver Spring smiled broadly after successfully
defending his title and setting another course record of 14:39
(14:52 in 2002) at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K. He was closely
challenged by John Henwood, a New Zealand 10,000 meter athlete
who competed in the 2001 World Outdoor Track Championships, and
Michael Wardian of Arlington. Five men went through two miles as
a group when Cooke made a move to command the race, explained
fifth place finisher David Spiller of Richmond. The five men
completed the 5K course within thirty seconds of each other;
Cooke and Henwood wrapped up the victory on the finishing
stretch, throttling ahead of Henwood for a three second margin
at the line. Wardian (photo below), who also finished third to
Cooke in 2002,
improved his time by 19 seconds to 14:55. Ben Cooke, who came to the area from James Madison University to
train under Pat Henner for a bid to make the 2004 Olympic
Trials, has been gradually working his way back from injury
during the winter. Massage treatment from Terel Hale has been
outstanding, he says, and allows him to manage a foot problem.
(Cooke placed second in July at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K
in 23:46.)
Reunion of Friends
High mileage trainers Michael Wardian and David Spiller, a
former roommate of Cooke of JMU, are in preparation to run a sub-
2:22 marathon and qualify for the Olympic Trials in Birmingham,
Alabama; Wardian plans to run this October's Marine Corps
Marathon and Spiller travels to the Philadelphia Distance Run
in September and the Midwest in October to the LaSalle Bank
Chicago Marathon.
A Comfortable Local Victory
In the women's race, Naoko Ishibe of Silver Spring ran hard from
the start to open a lead on Manassas resident Alisa Harvey that
she maintained throughout the course. Ishibe has participated
several times in the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K and won this year
with a best time of 17:00 to Harvey's 17:14. Incredibly, Ishibe
competes again on Monday in New Haven, CT at the USA Women's 20K
Championship; she placed 10th in June's USA Women's Half
Marathon Championship and qualified for the Saint Louis women's
Olympic Trials at the 2002 real Berlin Marathon
(2:47:22).
High Returns on Investment
Alisa Harvey, mother of two, exclaimed that her race was the
best she has run in a long time; Harvey ran 17:50 for fifth
place in 2002. The ability to run close to Naoko Ishibe, an
athlete at the top of her game, "tickled" Harvey along with a
time of 17:14. Harvey does half of her mileage, mostly interval
work, on a treadmill and uses a baby jogger with her younger
daughter for long runs. As head coach of the George Mason
University women's cross country team, Harvey is excited to have
a group of 16 talented runners this autumn. The star guest of
the day, 92 and 96 10,000m Olympian Todd Williams, attended the
University of Tennessee and is well known to fellow "Volunteer"
Harvey. She seeks to qualify in the 800m for the 2004 Olympic
Trials, which means tweaking to get to 2:05 from her best 2002
time of 2:08.
Champion Duathlete Marjan Huizing Places Third
A quarter of the finishers in the Kentlands 5K were 19 and
under; many high school teams participated in the run, including
cross country teams from Quince Orchard and Gaithersburg and the
girls Quince Orchard field hockey team. Former Olympian and
current Tennessee assistant coach Todd Williams knows the value
of sharing a passion for running; Williams spent 45 minutes
after the run signing posters and chatting briefly with folks.
The warm, humid weather challenged some runners and some, like
Marjan Huizing, were
disappointed with slower times. It's great to watch a large
group start their Labor Day weekend with a friendly dash through
the neighborhood.
