The Men
Brendan Vasher of Arlington, Virginia was the first one in to the finish of the 5th annual Zack's 5K Run, clocking 17:51. Vasher (44, photo left) was running hard because he knew he was being chased by a large contingent of midshipmen from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis,Maryland. Andrew Lawrence, 19, of Annapolis took second place in 18:37, followed by classmate Gerald Brooks, Jr. (19) in 19:06. Vasher knew the course well, having marked the turns and miles earlier that morning as part of his duties with Capital Running Company.

The Women
In the women's race, 24-year-old Eileen Kickish of Washington, DC (photo left) had a lesser lead against Rachel Beckmann, 21, of Annapolis, coming in first in 19:35, just eleven seconds ahead of Beckmann. Cheverly, Maryland's Beth Muehl took third place in 20:24.

The race, which honors the memory of Zachary Hebda, raises funds to help in the fight against childhood cancer. It is held on the campus of the University of Maryland in College Park, in front of the new Comcast Center arena.

Shortly after the start of the 5K race, kids of all ages lined up for the 1 mile fun run/walk around the campus.

More than 400 participants enjoyed a beautiful fall day after having endured several days of rainy (and hazardous) weather with the passing of Tropical Storm Ivan. Temperatures were in the high 50s at race time, with enough of a breeze to cause havoc with the finish line banner and balloon arch.

Post-race, runners enjoyed hot pizza, fresh bagels and an assortment of beverages while awaiting the awards ceremony and its random prizes.
