The Rockville 10K & 5K Runs return to the King Farm Community
in
Rockville, MD, on Sunday, October 2 at 8:30 am. Proceeds
from the race benefit the Rockville Youth Recreation Fund,
which enables low-income youth to participate in team sports
and other City recreation activities. The event feature prizes
for top finishers, random awards, music and food for runners,
friends and family. The Montgomery County Road Runners Club
will provide race management.Registration for the Rockville 10K & 5K races is $25 through

Race day registration (7:30-8:15 a.m.) is $30 at the King Farm
Village Center (King Farm Boulevard and Pleasant Drive in
Rockville). You must arrive at the race site before 8:00
a.m.--streets leading to the race site will be closed at 8:00
a.m.
Awards
Top male and female finishers in the open and masters (40 and
up) divisions of the 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer runs will be
eligible for prizes. There will be awards for the top two male
and female finishers in 11 age group divisions--including the
80-
and-over divisions.
In addition, all entrants will be eligible for a grand prize
drawing to be held after the race. The random prize is a $1,000
travel gift certificate.
"This race has a three decade tradition and it improves each
year. Everyone involved seeks to make changes beneficial to the
runners, friends and family members that participate in the
event," said Race Director Chuck Miller of Rockville's
Department of Recreation and Parks. "The King Farm neighborhood
has residents who enjoy watching the competitors and involved
merchants. who help make this a spectacular event for runners."
All entrants receive a long-sleeve t-shirt and access to the
post-race brunch. The Sergeant's Program, a locally based adult
fitness exercise program, will lead pre-race stretching
exercises.
The course starts and finishes at King Farm Village Center.
Parking will be available at Two Irvington Center, 702 King
Farm Boulevard. Participants and spectators should arrive
before 8 am.

History
Another outstanding field of road race competitors is expected
to take aim at several records; all 10-kilometer best-time
records have stood since at least 1993. The men's 10K open
division record of 30 minutes 16 seconds was set in 1985 by
Kevin McGarry. The women's 10K open record of 37:13 was set in
1991 by Louise Kelly. Ric Banning holds the male masters record
(32:19 in 1993) and Mary Preisel holds the female masters mark
(39:34 in 1987).
Road Closures
Residents should be aware that numerous roads in the King Farm
area will be closed or affected, starting at 8 a.m. the day of
the race. Redland Boulevard will be closed between Elmcroft and
east of Piccard Drive. Gaither Road will be closed from south
of Shady Grove Road to Redland. Portions of Crooked Creek
Drive, Grand Champion Drive, Elmcroft Boulevard, King Farm
Boulevard, Piccard Drive, Pleasant Drive, Redland Road, Reserve
Champion Drive and Thompson's Dairy Way also will be closed at
times. All roads should be re-opened by 10:30 a.m.
