20th Annual Fair Lakes 8K

The 20th anniversary Fair Lakes 8K will be held this Sunday,
September 10, at 8:30 am. The 8 kilometer race and 2 kilometer
fun run/walk take off from 12500 Fair Lakes Circle in Fairfax,
Virginia. The 8K race starts first and then the 2K fun run/walk.
Awards in the 8K race include cash prizes for the overall male
and female winners and wheelchair competitors ($100, $50, $25
plus Glory Days restaurants gift certificates), Glory Days gift
certificates for age group winners (top three in five-year age
groups, from 12 and under to 70 and over), and a perpetual
trophy (1st place) plus high-value Glory Days gift certificates
for the top three teams.
This race offers one of the longest lists of random prizes, too,
so you don't have to be fast to win a nice prize. The Grand
Prize is a $1,000 gift certificate to the Inn at Little
Washington.

The registration fee includes post-race refreshments,
entertainment by 94.7 WARW (Cerph), and long-sleeve t-shirts.Register on-line until noon on Friday, September 8. On-site
registration and packet pick-up will be held at the race site,
12500 Fair Lakes Circle, Fairfax, on Saturday, September 9, from
10:00 am to 3:00 pm, and on race day, beginning at 7:00 am.
Last year's race was won by Ryan Mammen, of Woodbridge,
Virginia, in a time of 25:16, followed closely by Eric Post of
Centreville in 25:22. Mammen and Post finished 1-2 in 2004, with
Post taking the title in 2003. Herndon's Samia Akbar won the
2005 women's race in 28:14, and Alisa Harvey of Manassas
followed in 29:37. Harvey was second (29:06) to Casey Smith in
2004, and won the race in 2003 (28:29). Ryan Mammen will return
to defend his title, but so far Post, Akbar, and Harvey have not
registered. The field is wide open! The race benefits Inova Kellar Center, a non-profit
community-supported organization providing family focused mental health
treatment for children and families, substance abuse treatment
services, and a special education day school program. The race is sponsored in part by The Peterson Companies and Shorenstein.
