The 20th annual Fair Lakes 8K had 920 finishers this year, the
most since 2001. Runners cruising along the rolling hills were
soon reminded that it was still summer. The race features both a
down hill start and a down hill finish. Two-time defending
champion Ryan Mammen (#1) and three time runner-up and course
record holder Eric Post (#4) had their hands full as Michael
Wardian (#3) debuted with victory in 25:20. 2004 winner Alisa
Harvey (40) of Manassas, VA [in photo] had a three-minute
victory, setting the masters standard with 29:28. The precious
record was set by Laura Freix in 31:07 in 2003. The course was a
little different then and many of the course records were set
that year. Still, many of today's happy road warriors exclaimed
that they thought this year's course was easier.Since turning seventy in July, Lusby's Tami Graf has been
rampaging through the record books. Today's 47:01 obliterated
the old record by more than fifteen minutes. This is the tenth
distance from 400 meters to the half marathon where Graf's name
is listed as the Best of 2006. For the men, the moving of the
guard occurred in the three oldest divisions. Since 1997, Henryk
Bukowski (86) has held the record for the 75-79 and 80-99
divisions, winning honors four times. Melvin Mattson (80) had
held the 70-44 record and won the 75-79 division. Today, he set
aside Bukowski's time with an inspired 47:06. Jack McMahon of
Rockville, MD had possession of the 70-74 division with his
39:15 in 2001 and proceeded to win twice more before moving to
the 75-79 division this year. He set aside Walt Washburn's
former record with a swift 42:44. Moving right in behind him,
Richard Williams of Alexandria, VA copped the new 70-74 record
with 38:30.
The elite race started with Michael Wardian (32) of Arlington,
VA [in photo] pushing the pace. The past two years, Ryan Mammen
of Woodbridge, VA had held off Eric Post of Centreville, VA by
10 meters. Racing back past the start at 1.5 miles Wardian's
lead was even smaller. Post stuck close. He had also finished a
mere stride back in second in 2002 before uncorking a monster
24:50 in 2003 to set the record. He could not catch Wardian and
settled for his four runner-up spot in the last six years.
Mammen struggled after having won with the fifth and sixth
fastest finishes since 1997 the past two years and dropped back
to third in 26:03.
Low numbers for the seeded runners proved accurate as Hillary
Kipchumba (#6), a recent import from Kenya, finished next in
26:26. Johannes Luger (22), a European runner, was next a second
later. Fourth seeded Bert Rodgriguez (#5) of Arlington, VA was
the sixth and final runner to bust 27:00 with a nice 26:53.
Congressman Tom Davis wore the number two bib.
The loquacious Max Lockwood (#11) of Washington, DC finished
tenth dominating the sub masters in a swift 27:37. Regular
rivals Ted Poulos (44) of McLean, VA and Jean Christophe Arcaz
(45) of Rockville, MD battled for the top master spot. Both won
their division with Arcaz maintaining a second edge in 28:39. In
the last ten years, Poulos has won his division seven times,
including three masters wins. Norton Compton (51) of Fairfax, VA
continues to rampage through the division, surprising a tough
Mike Hart 29:14 to 29:36. Jay Wind won the 55-59 division
handily in 33:55. For the 60-64 division, course record holder Patrick Griffith
(30:42) was on hand waving the flag at the start. He did not
race as he is recovering from pneumonia. This left the barn door
wide open for Richard Pane of Herndon, VA to win by three
quarters of a mile in 36:24. The next division was much closer.
Bernie Gallagher (65) of Fairfax, VA is back. He blitzed past a
very tough Lloyd Blackwell of Warrenton, VA [in photo before the
race] midway through the race to win 36:16 to 36:47. Gallagher
had run the Marine Corps Marathon at age 48 in 2:42:00.
The surprise of the women's field was not Harvey's master record
win. She is expected to run well, owning the second fastest time
of 28:28 winning in 2003 and finishing second overall the next
two years in 29:05 and then 29:37. Today's 29:28 was remarkable
in that she won by a half mile and challenged at the finish only
by top notch runners such as Terry McLaughlin (46) of
Spotsylvania, VA (29:26), holding off Iam Clements (42) of
Alexandria, VA by a second. The real surprise was Naomi Stanford
(56) of Washington, DC [in photo] making an assault on Sandra
Adams course record. Adams, a three division winner, was absent
but her record of 34:03 seemed safe. Stanford made it close
finishing as the eighth women overall in 34:30. Laeticia
Warring (43) of Reston, VA, sixth overall, was the 40-44 winner
in 34:03. Jenny Mlinarcik of Alexandria, VA and Victoria Lynch of
Washington, DC are regular Ranked Runners. They battled
the rolling hills for the runner-up spot with Harvey a distant
memory. Mlinarcik triumphed in 32:27. Jennilee Russell (23) of
Woodbridge, VA closed on Lynch's 32:54, finishing shortly
afterward in 33:10 After cruising across the ChampionChip mats, runners headed for
the ice cream carts for cooling popsicles. These well-supplied
delights lasted well after the last runner had crossed the
finish line. The many prizes, randomly drawn were posted with
their winning bib numbers next to them. The Grand Prize for the
random drawings was a $1,000.00 gift certificate to The Inn at
Little Washington. After the 8K start, kids and adults alike lined up for a 2K fun
run, earning blue ribbons for their efforts.
