growing up on an orange plantation in Florida before moving to
New York City in the 1930s. There, she studied at the
prestigious School of American Ballet until she developed a
painful bone chip in her ankle developed at age 16. George Balanchine, choreographer and co-founder of the School of
American Ballet, introduced Kryzanowska to Joseph Pilates in
1941 to help her avoid having surgery on her ankle. She has
since devoted her life to studying the Pilates Method and was
designated Joseph Pilates' successor in promoting his work prior
to his death in 1967. Kryzanowska carries on Pilates' work
through Romana's Pilates, a studio where she serves as a Level
I teacher. She teaches continuing education courses and trains,
tests, and certifies new Pilates instructors.
