For the Washington Running Report

The Pilates Center at Goucher College and the Dance Department will welcome Romana Kryzanowska, the world-renowned protege of Joseph Pilates, for a lecture in True Pilates at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, November 10 in the Todd Dance Studio. The lecture, followed by a reception, is $25 or $15 for students with ID. In addition, Kryzanowska will offer two master classes on Friday, November 10--a beginner/low intermediate mat class at 9:00 a.m. and an intermediate/advanced mat class at 10:30 a.m. The cost per mat class is $29 or $19 for students with ID. The cost for a mat class and the lecture/reception is $50, and either mat class may be observed for $18.

Call Jessica Stephenson at 410-337-6531 to reserve a space. Mail payment to her attention at Goucher College: Pilates Center, 1021 Dulaney Valley Road, Baltimore, MD, 21204.

Kryzanowska was born in Detroit. She spent her early years growing up on an orange plantation in Florida before moving to New York City in the 1930s. There, she studied at the prestigious School of American Ballet until she developed a painful bone chip in her ankle developed at age 16.

George Balanchine, choreographer and co-founder of the School of American Ballet, introduced Kryzanowska to Joseph Pilates in 1941 to help her avoid having surgery on her ankle. She has since devoted her life to studying the Pilates Method and was designated Joseph Pilates' successor in promoting his work prior to his death in 1967. Kryzanowska carries on Pilates' work through Romana's Pilates, a studio where she serves as a Level I teacher. She teaches continuing education courses and trains, tests, and certifies new Pilates instructors.

Goucher College is an independent, coeducational institution dedicated to the interdisciplinary traditions of the liberal arts and a broad international perspective on education. The first college in the nation to pair required study abroad with a special travel stipend for every undergraduate, Goucher believes in complementing its strong majors and rigorous curriculum with abundant opportunities for hands-on experience in the world. Through internships, community service, and study abroad--and a first-rate arts and sciences academic program--Goucher teaches its students to engage the world as true global citizens.
