11th Annual Spring Valley/Sumner Community 5K Classic
Race Raises More than $100,000 for Children's Hospital
Kathy Freedman September 8, 2001 Bethesda, MD Washington Running Report
As runners climbed the hill out of the park and rounded the turn
into the finish line, they were greeted with the cheers of the
spectators and happy to see the finish line in the parking lot,
not up the additional hill and back to the start. The new course
was greeted with enthusiasm, as runners remembered the previous
course through the Spring Valley neighborhood. The new course
has its share of hills, too, but they are concentrated at the
end. The 11th annual Spring Valley/Sumner Community 5K Classic has
survived several changes of venue, and by far, the new Shops at
Sumner Place is the best location for this popular fall family
event. The race host, the W.C. & A.N. Miller Companies, unveiled
its new renovation of the former Little Falls Mall to critical
acclaim and an outpouring of support from the community. Joseph Daniels (35) from Marlow Heights, MD, won the race in a
dazzling time of 16:15. He was followed closely by David Mead
(33) of Bethesda in 16:39. Malcolm Lester (30) was third in
16:58.
In the women's race, eight women ran under seven minute pace.
They were headed up by Rebecca Silvis (28) of Washington, DC
(photo left),
who finished in 20:04. Second-place Evance Stalley (26) of
Charlottesville, VA (# 631 in first photo), and third-place
Tiffany Davis (23) of
Washington, DC, had identical times of 20:37.The first finisher in the female masters division was Sarah
Buckheit (41) of Reston, VA, who ran 21:19. The first male
masters division finisher was Jean-Christ Arcaz (40) of
Rockville, MD. His time of 17:11 was good for fourth overall. Immediately after the 5K, the Kids Sprint was held in two heats,
first the little ones, and then the older kids. All the kids
were rewarded with medals and goodie bags, and enthusiastic hugs
and support from their parents. Post-race food was provided by Ridgewell's Caterers. Runners are
always happy to see the purple Ridgewell's trucks at an event.
The bounteous spread included marinated vegetables, bean soup,
muffins, fruit, Haagen-Daz sorbet, and DrinkMore Water. Random prizes included a DVD player. During the awards ceremony,
Ted Miller, President of W.C. & A.N. Miller Companies, said that
the race raised more than $100,000 for Children's Hospital. Photos By Rick Freedman
