By Brian Ruberry September 2, 2002 Gaithersburg, MD For the Washington Running Report
Cool temperatures made for hot times as the top three finishers
broke the course record at the Kentlands/Lakelands 5K Run on
August 31 in Gaithersburg, MD. Ben Cooke, 25, of Silver Spring,
MD won in 14:52, shattering Troy Harry's record set last year
by more than 30 seconds. Cooke's training partner, Kyle Smits, 23, of Washington, DC came
in second (15:03). Michael Wardian, 28, of Arlington, VA, led
the race before fading in the last half mile to finish third in
15:14.
The women's record also fell as both 19-year old Atalelech
Ketema (16:51) of Washington, DC (photo left) and 23-three-year
old Heather
Hanscom (17:13) of Alexandria, VA broke the old record of
17:14. Kristin Pierce Barry, 28, of Arlington, VA placed third
(17:20). The top three men and women finishers received cash prizes of
up
to $300. Racing legend Bill Rodgers, 54, won his age group in 18:09. "I
was hoping to run faster, but it was still a great race,"
said Rodgers, a four-time winner of the Boston and New York
Marathons. "It's a beautiful community to run in, and I loved
all the twists and turns of this terrific course." The 1,115 registrants were the most in the race's nine years.
The race, hosted by the Kentlands Community Foundation in
partnership with the City of Gaithersburg, benefited the
Foundation and a City scholarship fund. For Results
