The Marine Corps Marathon has announced it will re-open
limited registration for this year's race due to increased
demand for entry.Interested runners may sign up for the Marine Corps Marathon on
a first-come, first-served basis, from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. on
Wednesday, September 18, 2002 and Thursday, September 19, 2002.
Only 500 additional slots will be made available.
Registration must be made IN PERSON at race headquarters,
located on Quantico Marine Corps Base, 3035 Barnett Avenue,
Quantico, Virginia. Registration costs $75. Checks, cash and
money orders are accepted. Payment must be made at time of
registration.
Please note that two forms of photo identification will be
required to access the military base, according to the marathon
spokeswoman.
The 27th Marine Corps Marathon will be held on Sunday, October
27, 2002, at 8:30 a.m., starting and ending in Arlington,
Virginia. The mission of the Marine Corps Marathon is to promote
the United States Marine Corps commitment to physical fitness by
organizing a "People's Marathon" where runners can achieve a
personal goal and realize their full potential. More than
18,000 runners have registered to run one of the most scenic
routes in the country: along the Potomac, around the Pentagon,
down the National Mall and past the White House, Washington and
Jefferson monuments, the Lincoln and Vietnam Veteran's memorial,
the Supreme Court and the United States Capitol.
The Marine Corps Marathon also hosts The Washington Post
presents: The Healthy Kids Fun Run on Saturday, October 26 and
the Marine Corps Marathon 5K presented by Deer Park on Sunday,
October 27, immediately following the start of the Marathon.
