In the photo below, Ruth McKeen (41) of Vienna races Andy Pfefferkorn (37) of Fairfax to the finish.

The rain was over and blue sky filled the Vienna neighborhoods surrounding the Navy Federal Credit Union. This was the tenth time the race was held, but the first time it was open to the public. Two hundred twenty runners and walkers registered for either the 5K or the fun run/walk.

The first eight men were misdirected due to a mix-up on the course. Despite running approximately four and one-half tenths of a mile too little, it was determined that the order of finish would not have changed. Their times would be increased by about two minutes and 20 seconds if they had run the correct course.

Ted Poulos of McLean was the first runner back to the finish, followed by Erik Taylor of Arlington 13 seconds later. Wayne Cottrell of Layton, Utah was third.

Jay Wind of Arlington was the first finisher to run the complete course. He finished in 20 minutes flat; first in his age group.

In the women's race, Amy Bacevich of Arlington, VA was unchallenged. Her 20:47 was 1:12 ahead of second-place Victoria Trunnell of McLean. Reston's Sarah Buckheit was third in 22:04.

As soon as the 5K runners cleared the start, kids and fun runners of all ages lined up for a jaunt through the woods around the Navy Federal Credit Union campus.

There was an enjoyable warmup before the race, treats from Fresh Fields, and hotdogs for all to enjoy. The race has a lot of potential to become one of Vienna's more popular events. You could tell that from all the smiles.
