PVI . . . Come and Run With the Best
By George Banker
September 13, 2002
Fairfax, VA
For the Washington Running Report

Paul VI High School in partnership with Nike and Metro Run & Walk will host the 3rd Annual PVI Runfest 5K, Sunday, September 22, 2002 at 8:00 am. The two loop USATF certified course has gentle rolling hills. The start and finish will be at the school which is located in the center of Fairfax City.

The school yard will never be the same as local and international runners will meet at the start line. The race has something for the entire family, fun and refreshments. Last year, four men ran under 15 minutes and two women ran under 18 minutes. The top male and female runners in the open and masters division will be running after $2,250 in cash awards. The age group winners will receive merchandise awards. Also, there will be a $100 bonus for new event records for the open and masters, male and female.

The top five open male and female cash awards will be $300-$200- $100-$50-$25. The top five masters division male and female cash awards will be $200-$100-$75-$50-$25. In addition, the top male and female winners will receive a Nike Speed/Distance Monitor. There will be five-year age groups and no duplication of awards.

The event records were set last year: Open Male Eliud Barngetuny 14:42 Kenya Open Female Carole Zajac-Tynan 17:16 Sterling, VA Master Male John Tuttle 15:31 Douglasville, GA Master Female Win Persina 20:07 Washington, DC

"I love to have good runners and to have competition. I was surprised that Darrell General went by me. I thought this was supposed to be a small race. I'm a miler, 3:53. At the home stretch I said, 'I can do this,'" said last year's second place finisher, Ben Kapsoiya of Kenya, in a time of 14:47.

The race registration fee is $20. The student (12th grade and lower) registration is $10. Packet pick-up and late registration will be held Friday, September 20, 4:00-8:00 pm and Saturday, September 21, 12:00-5:00 pm at Metro Run & Walk, 7516 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, VA, (703) 790-3338. On race day the pick-up and registration will start at 6:30 am.

The PVI Runfest 5K is brought to you by Metro Run & Walk and Nike in conjunction with sponsorship from Clarke-Hook Corporation, Franey, Parr & Muha, Merrill Lynch, SequoiaBank, and others.
