Leesburg 10K & 20K: 2008

General Information

Come out and join us on Sunday, August 10, 2008 for the 20th Annual Leesburg 10K and 5th Annual 20K in scenic Loudoun County, Virginia! Perhaps you'll meet up with a bovine companion along the way as you run through historic downtown Leesburg and along the W&OD trail. Baby joggers and strollers are not permitted on the course as they are a safety hazard on the W&OD trail. The race features several unique amenities, including technical T-shirts with a new design for the 20th anniversary race, a great post-race brunch with ice cream for all (thanks to title sponsor Harris Teeter), a live band, and numerous awards and random prizes!

The race is sponsored by Harris Teeter and organized by the YMCA Loudoun County.

The YMCA Loudoun County has added a 20K race to complement the existing 10K and offer runners the opportunity to test their fitness and stamina before beginning their training for a fall marathon. Or, perhaps you have never run a 20K and want to set a new PR! Either way, come out and run with us. Both races will start and finish at the same place and same starting time (7:30 AM) The courses run through town and access the W&OD Trail from King Street, travelling west. The courses diverge as 10K runners turn around and head back to town just past the former access road from Dry Mill Road, with 20K runners continuing on before returning to town on the trail. See photos of the 20K portion of the course.

Location & Time: Both races will take place on Sunday, August 10, 2008 at historic Market Station at 203 Harrison Street SE, 20175 in downtown Leesburg, Virginia. MapQuest On-site packet pick-up and registration will open at 6:15 am and the 10K and 20K races will begin promptly at 7:30 am.

Directions & Parking:
From the Beltway, take the Dulles Toll Rd west. Exit onto Rt. 7 immediately after passing through first toll booth ($.75). Or, just take Rt. 7 directly off the Beltway if coming from the south. Take Rt. 7 west (north) toward Leesburg.

When you get into Leesburg, you will start to pass strip shopping centers. Keep going on Rt. 7 until the road splits. Rt. 7 goes to the right, and Loudoun Street goes left. Bear left onto Loudoun St.

Go down the hill, and park in the garage near the intersection with Harrison Street. Start/finish line is to the left on Harrison Street in front of Market Station and the Tuscarora Mill restaurant.

Faster Alternative: Stay on the toll road all the way to the end (toll is $3.00). Take Exit 1A to Leesburg. Stay in right lane and take the first exit (Business Rt 15 into Leesburg). Bear right at end of ramp and follow Rt. 15 into town.

Turn right at Loudoun Street. Go down the hill and park in the garage at the intersection of Loudoun and Harrison Streets.

From White's Ferry: Ferry opens at 5:00 am. Fare is $4 one-way, $6 round trip. After a pleasant crossing, Leesburg is 5 to 10 minutes from the ferry.

After crossing the Potomac, follow the ferry road to Rt. 15 and turn left and go towards Leesburg. At the place where the Rt. 15 bypass splits off to the left, follow the business Rt. 15 into Leesburg.

At Loudoun Street, turn left. At the bottom of the hill, park in the garage at the intersection of Loudoun and Harrison Streets.

There is plenty of parking available on surrounding streets and in a municipal garage just one block from the start/finish lines. Please do not park in church parking lots!

Here is a Map of parking lots and garages in downtown Leesburg.

Kids' Fun Run: A free kids' fun run of about one-quarter mile will be held immediately after the start of the 10K and 20K races. No registration is necessary. Just show up and run! Kids will cross the official finish line, and medals will be awarded to all finishers!

Volunteers: Volunteers are needed to help with various tasks on race day. If you are injured and can't run, or are accompanying a runner to the race, or you just want to give something back to the sport and contribute to the success of the event, please contact Amy Grabowski at the YMCA Loudoun County.

Please note: Skates, pets, headphones, and baby joggers are prohibited on the course. No refunds. Please pick up your t-shirt on race day, as we cannot mail it to you. To confirm your entry, see the list of registered runners.

Additional information: For additional information, call the Race Hotline at (301) 871-0400.

ChronoTrack:
Both races will be scored with the ChronoTrack race timing system. All participants are required to attach the D-tag to their shoe. The ChronoTrack system calculates your individual time from the time you cross the starting line (rather than when the clock starts running) to the time you cross the finish line, resulting in a net or "Tag" time for participants. Overall awards will be based on "clock" time and age group awards will be based on "Tag" or net time. The registration fee includes the rental cost of the ChronoTrack.

For optimal performance, the D-tag must be attached to the shoe in the proper manner. For instructions on properly using the D-tag, please click here.
