Sunday, October 2, 2005
Photos by Drew Woodrich Arlington, VA
See the Army Ten Miler Web site for an explanation of the unofficial race status of the run. The re-routed course (access to the 14th Street Bridge was denied) added at least one extra mile.
Runners on the Course Near the Kennedy Center (between miles 3 & 4)
Top photo: Chris Graff (blue singlet), age 29 of Arlington, VA,
and
Captain Ryan Kilpatrick (US Army, age 26) raced for the lead.
Graff took command of the race and returned
to the Pentagon ahead of everyone.
Second photo: 23-year-old Samia Akbar of Herndon, VA, settled
in
comfortably with the men to "win" the women's race.
Third photo: One of the US Army's top runners, Sergeant Sandu
Rebenciuc (36), ran close to the leaders.

Top photo: Alisa Harvey (left, age 40 of Manassas, VA)
performed well as a masters competitor and was one of the first
women to return to the
Pentagon. Leg cramps were the only difficulty she faced.
Second photo: Michael Wardian (center) of Arlington, VA ran a
strong race. Wardian placed third in the Steamtown (PA)
Marathon one week after the Army Ten Miler.
Third photo: The US Army had several of their male athletes
racing in the front of the pack. Captain Clay Schwabe, 26, is a
former NCAA All-American at Princeton University.

Top photo: One of the top local runners, Max Lockwood
(shirtless) of Washington, DC, pressed the pace all the way. He
has been training with local marathoners like Kenyan Wilson
Komen and has noticeably improved his
performances.
Second photo: Local running legend Darrell General (yellow
shirt), age 39 of Hyattsville, MD, has played the game for two
decades. General won the 1987 and 1988 Army Ten Milers.
Third photo: Teddy Mitchell (left), age 33 of Albuquerque, NM,
is
another veteran racer with the U.S. Army.
Bottom photo: Some of the front runners were rather muscular. It shows that one doesn't have to be pencil thin to run fast!
