 The Season of the Long Races 2007 WRR Fall Runner Rankings By James Moreland January/February 2008 For the Washington Running Report

In the last three years no ranking period has had as many
runners. More than 108,000 runners ran qualified times in this
period. Nearly one million runners have raced in more than
2,100 races since the start of 2005. Records continue to be
broken. However, this period had the lowest percentage of
ranked runners (2.77%). Perhaps it is all the marathons. Three
races had more than 100 ranked runners. Two were the largest
races: Marine Corps Marathon and the Army 10 Miler. The third
was, again, the Battle of the Potomac that ended the period
with 70% of the finishers having ranked times. The Baltimore
Running Festival, with a 5K, half marathon, and marathon, had
the third highest race total and 140 ranked runners. In
November, the SunTrust Richmond Marathon with the nTelos 8K had
the fourth highest race total with a record 176 ranked times. Major races, those with 500 or more runners, increased to 123
this year and 28 in the fall period. For the 10K, the Marine
Corps was the largest with 2700 finishers, the Washington, DC
Masonic Veterans Day 10K had the most ranked runners by far
with 89, and the Home Run had the highest percentage of elites
with 10.6%. The 5K was led by the Arlington 9-11 with 2600, the
Battle of the Potomac had 102 of its 144 finishers ranked. In
the 8K, nTelos had six times as many runners, with nearly 5,000
finishers, who ran 93 ranked times to top that list. The Hog
Neck Scamper 5M in Pasadena had the highest percentage of
elites with 11%. With a dozen half marathons during this period, Baltimore's
half had more than all the other eleven combined, though it had
the lowest percentage of elites. The second biggest, Parks, had
the most ranked runners with 80. The Northern Central Trail led
with 13% ranked runners, while Parks was sixth best. The BB&T
Lynchburg 10 Mile started that distance in September but autumn
10 milers mean Army, as always the largest in the country with
17,000 strong. In November, Yorktown had about 10% of its 200
runners ranked. The 3000 ranked times in this period is the third highest total
but the period had a record 219 races entered. One thousand
twenty-six different men and 990 different women ran at least
one qualifying time. Two hundred eighty-seven men and 264 women
were ranked. One hundred nine runners qualified for the elite
Open Division.
Runners who win the race or win their division in a race earn
an asterisk beside their name. Open runners only get an
asterisk for an overall win. The Speed Alone (reported at the
top of each division) is the fastest qualifying time run for
