The Best of 2005 WRR Runner Rankings
By James Moreland
March/April 2006
For the Washington Running Report

"If you start me up, start me up, I'll never stop, never stop."

-- Rolling Stones

2005 produced massive amounts of runners; running is alive and well in Washington, DC. In our area alone, more than a quarter million runners raced in 655 races used for compiling the Runner Rankings. Almost 100 of those races were major, meaning they had more than five hundred finishers.

Men ran 5,700 ranked times, while the women totaled more than 3,600 times. 292 men met the standard of running two or more races in two of the four ranking periods. 234 women met that standard as well.

For the men, the 60-64 division was the largest with 45 times. The women qualified 64 runners for the Open division and 41 for the masters.

For the year-end, there will not be an asterisk for age group and overall wins. There were so many that there would not be enough space for them.

The Speed Alone, reported at the beginning of each section, is the fastest qualifying time run for each division. In red, it means the division champion ran it.

New runners with special talents, or those who are ready to move on to the next division with domination in mind, are designated the BULLET, i.e., here is a bulletin to alert you to a speeding bullet. Not every division has a BULLET. Some have more than one.

The goal of the runner rankings is to rank the best runners of Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia in five-year age groups for the purpose of stimulating competition in the Washington region.
