For the Washington Running Report

Open Men
George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile, 47:30, 10K = 28:35

Gurmessa Megerssa (28) of Ethiopia is the favorite at every race he runs.

Gurmessa Megerssa was last year's champion and we listed him as Gurmessa Kumssa. He was not around for the summer rankings but he won the other three ranking periods. We list his home as Washington, DC but it has also been Waldorf and Oxon Hill, though he hails from Ethiopia. He won seven races and was always near the top in even the most competitive races. He started the season with an excellent 23:39 to win the Alexandria Turkey Trot. Come spring, he handled DARCARS Pike's Pike for a 29:27 victory, which made his runner-up at Sallie Mae in 30:08 appear to be dogging it. In November, he followed race winner Dagene Alemu (29:55) under the event record for the Masonic Veterans Day 10K in 29:57.

While many top runners did not run enough to qualify, that was not runner-up Stephen Crane's problem. He also had seven overall victories and was on the heels of Megerssa all year long. At Pike's Peek, he (30:14) was sandwiched between fourth place John Bitok (30:11) and fifth place Birhanu Wukaw (30:15). At the Credit Union Cherry Blossom he was edged by another tough competitor, Patrick MacAdie of Washington, DC. MacAdie ran 49:51 to Crane's 50:02. Good thing Crane had already run the GW Parkway 10 Mile in 49:45. MacAdie (25:09) did also finish second between Megressa (25:06) and Crane (25:11) at the slightly long Van Metre 5M. Still, MacAdie had only the minimum four races and the other two, GW Birthday 10K and National HM found him well behind Crane.

Sixth place Michael Wardian was everywhere you wanna be, winning a dozen races and running scores more. He ran 13 marathons, winning four. He also qualified for the Olympic Trials with his 2:21:37 at the Shamrock. He ran the Olympic Trials in New York in November, finishing in 2:30:54. Dave Berdan ran an excellent 50:30 at Credit Union Cherry Blossom to exactly match Wardian's Shamrock Marathon and earn seventh place.

Ezkyas Sisay was runner-up at the Parks HM in 1:07:18 for eighth place. Abraha Asefa, who won the Summer Rankings, is ninth with a swift runner-up spot at the Rockville Rotary Twilight 8K in 24:04. Allen Carr rounds out the top ten with a strong Veterans Day 10K in 30:34.

In photo below, Charlie Hurt (22) of Charlottesville, VA heads down the boardwalk to finish a strong 1:13:22 at the Rock 'n' Roll HM.

19 & Under Men
Parks HM, 1:07:18, 10K = 30:32

Division winner Ezkyas Sisay breaks the tape at the Goblin Gallop 5K

The teen division is getting huge with nearly 1,300 qualifying times. Now more are running multiple races and 32 qualified for the year-end rankings. Nobody came close to sizzling Ezkyas Sisay. He bolted to the lead in every race he ran, winning his age group in every race. He had the 11 fastest times, including eight overall wins. Three times he broke 15 minutes in the 5K. He ran 30:50 for fifth overall in the world-class field at Apple Blossom. His best race was the Parks HM, as runner-up, in 1:07:18.

Neal Darmody of Gaithersburg, MD continues to improve. He rushed to a swift Pike's Peek 10K in 32:22, more than two minutes faster than last year. At Credit Union Cherry Blossom he tangled with the world's fastest runners, finishing in 55:30. Greg Jubb of Westminster, MD came alive in November, dropping nearly a minute and a half to be the overall winner at the Rockville 5K in 16:02. He proved it was no fluke, running the Veterans Day 10K in 33:32. William Garland of Virginia Beach, VA moves out of the teen division this year. He ran the Turkey Trot 10K in 33:26 in 2006 to start the winter. He added eight 5K wins, all with Open Division qualifying times.

35-39 Men
DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 30:04

Andy Mason (35) of Hagerstown, MD has a solid SunTrust Bank National Marathon in 2:49:51.

For some reason this division is always smaller. Seven of the top ten from last year did not qualify this year. Ranking the runners was as easy as one, two, three. Rob Magin of Olney, MD led the charge at Pike's Peek with 32:41 with Michael Colaiacovo of Baltimore, MD finishing in 32:59. Kevin Yates ran next in 34:08. It should be noted that Edmund Burke finished second overall in 30:04 breaking the sub masters record of 30:06 set by runner-up Brian Ferrari in the race's very first year (1996).

Magin does not race much outside of Montgomery County Road Runner races. He won the Bethesda Trolley 5M in 26:34. Colaiacovo had a lot of races, including a 16-flat Matzoh Ball 5K. He also wrangled with Yates at Credit Union Cherry Blossom, coming out on top 55:55 to 56:43. Jon Torrance is fourth with a couple of fast 5Ks in the low 16s. Robert Wolfe gets fifth at the biggest 10 Miler, Army, in 57:01.

40-44 Men
George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile, 53:39, 10K = 32:17

Andres Wright starts off the year right in 2007 as second overall at the Rotary Resolution 10K.

John Piggott of Williamsburg, VA won the first and the fourth ranking periods. Doug Mock of Columbia, MD won the middle two. Piggott started the year with an overall win at the Lower Potomac Marathon in 2:33:05. A week later, Mark Stickley of Winchester, VA upped the ante and blasted an excellent 1:11:20 at the Shamrock HM. The next week Piggott started the spring with an even faster National Marathon in 2:31:38 to close on Stickley. At the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile, Mock made his bones defeating Stickley 53:39 to 54:16.

The following week, Mock raced down Rockville Pike for a 32:43 win. Recently turned master Andres Wright of Frederick, MD wanted a piece of the action and was finishing shortly afterwards in 32:57. Piggott ran two more fine marathons and four very solid halves, which helped secure third place but could not move him back to the title he held in 2006. Wright had two excellent 10Ks at Sallie Mae and Home Run. Stickley was even faster at the GW Birthday and vanquished Piggott at the Apple Blossom 33:29 to 33:50, in his home stomping grounds.

The next three spots were very close. Darrell General of Cheverly, MD had beaten Mark Hoon of Bethesda at Credit Union Cherry Blossom 56:33 to 56:58 to start April. At Pike's Peek the two were inseparable, charging down the final hill to White Flint. General leaned for a one second victory in 33:49. In November, Matt Richards whose fastest 10-mile was 58:04 in September, uncorked a monster 2:37:10 to win the masters at the SunTrust Richmond Marathon. His 10K equivalent of 33:44 is just short of passing the other two.

Last year's number two and three also ran at Pike's Peek. This year Rodney Timpson ran 34:10 just ahead of Chris Chattin's 34:13. Thirty-seven runners qualified.

45-49 Men
Shamrock Festival Marathon, 2:35:09, 10K = 33:18

Ted Poulos of McLean, VA has run more than 3,000 races.

Dai Roberts of Virginia Beach, VA rarely runs races. This year he ran the bare minimum of four races to qualify. He ran 45Ks in two "tune-up" races in January. Then mid March he was the overall winner at the Shamrock 5K in 16:07, the fastest in the division. Then three days later he popped the best race of the year at the opposite end of the spectrum with a fancy Shamrock Marathon in 2:35:09.

Runner-up Greg Cauller of York, PA ran a slew of races and won 16 of them. At the GW Parkway 10 Mile, he bested fifth place Dave Berardi 55:41 to 56:20. Then he triumphed at the champion maker Pike's Peek 10K in 33:30 as third master to come so close to Roberts for the title. David Haaga of Rockville, MD had broken Roberts's best time in the 25K in February. Then at Credit Union Cherry Blossom, he moved into contention with a 56:27. At Pike's Peek, he edged record holder Jim Hage (31:34 in 2003) with 33:34 to 33:40. Hage is now 50. His second race was a Twilight 8K triumph ahead of Haaga 27:44 to 27:53.

Berardi had the best half marathon at the Shamrock in 1:15:04. Roberts ran 1:15:17 at Fleet Feet in October. George Buckheit of Reston, VA ran his last race in this division, finishing third at Pike's Peek in 34:43. Brian Daugherty of Chesapeake, VA ran the Shamrock 8K in 27:29 for seventh. Jean Christophe Arcaz had a dozen age group wins to go with a solid Pike's Peek in 35:06 and Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 58:23 to just nudge

50-54 Men
DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K = 34:25

Mike Hart (51) of Washington, DC polished off a lot of grandmaster victories before retiring from racing.

Steve Chantry of Williamsburg, VA won the title last year but only two of the ranking periods. He was very clear that he wanted an undefeated title, not that he had lost a head-to-head in 2006. He started 2007 relatively tamely with a 17:07 5K win that was just two seconds faster than Maurice Pointer's Shamrock 5K. Indeed, Dan Lawson had already run 16:55. Chantry added a Fort Eustis 10K in 35:01 to put the others back in their place.

In the spring, everyone was headed for the showdown at Pike's Peek. Pointer was confident as he would win as many races (34) as Chantry (18) and Lawson (16) combined. Race morning Chantry was gunning for another taste of victory over Moeser. Moeser prevailed over his 34:25 but Chantry won the division crown that day. Training buddy James Bates surprised everyone by scurrying past 55-59 champion Rick Platt and challenging Chantry in a speedy 34:59. Before the year's end, Chantry would have his only division loss to Bates at the Hampton Days 10K. Lawson was out kicked by just one second by the speeding Pointer in 35:32. Pointer was coming off a win at the downhill Main Street Mile in Westminster in 4:58.

Chantry had the fastest 8K at the Shamrock in 27:28 and the fastest 5K in 16:46 at Red White and Blue. In the fall, he ran the Rock 'n' Roll HM in 1:18:03 while Pointer regained the third spot racing the NCR Trails HM in 1:18:04. Bates ran the Governor's Land 5K in 17:18 but was trumped by Pete Gibson of Murfreesboro, NC in 17:08. In November, Gibson polished off another fast 5K in 17:18 to clinch the fifth spot.

Mike Hart of Washington, DC has finished his running career. He was just starting to make waves, winning the GW Birthday 10K in 36:01. He had won the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way in 2006 in 36:31. Now arthritis has sidelined him from racing and he tells us that it may be permanent. Always a cheerful volunteer and a former running club president, Hart will still be a big part of area running. Forty-three runners qualified.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K = 33:47

Roland Rust of Bethesda, MD races home in the Kensington 8K.

The sometimes enigmatic, often theatrical Chuck Moeser is running life on his own bold terms. He predicts and we eagerly wait to see if he can deliver. He came out last spring looking for his own shadow, testing himself on six races. He ran two top 10 milers, and three of the four top 5Ks of the year. Then he ended speculation about which grandmaster carried the biggest stick at DARCARS Pike's Peek where 20 plus Ranked Runners were engaged. But he only raced one time after the spring and that left Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA to pick up this year's crown.

Platt had a great year. He was just nudged out of the title by a swift 5K in the winter and the spring belonged to Moeser. In the summer he was gearing up for the fall, which he won handily. His best period was the spring when he set the Virginia State record at Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K in 35:31. Two weeks later he fell about a minute off the half marathon record, running the Dismal Swamp Stomp in 1:18:39. Then at DARCARS Pike's Peek, he was fourth grandmaster in 35:21. In all, he had 25 age group wins.

Jim Wright of Gaithersburg, MD was next in line. He had earned the summer crown with a swift 17:53 5K and a Rockville Twilight 8K victory in 30:00 over winter champion and sixth place Richard Adams, Jr. (30:17). Still, he got the silver by following Platt home at Pike's Peek in 36:58 and leading fourth place Mick Slonaker of Columbia, MD and third place Bill Taylor of Woodbridge, VA after Moeser's 58:12 at Credit Union Cherry Blossom. Wright ran 62:27, closely followed by Taylor in 62:32 and Slonaker agonizingly close in 62:40. Slonaker also has a faster 10K at Pike's Peek in 37:26 but Taylor won again at Army in 61:48 to seal his spot. Platt had the fastest 10 Mile at Yorktown in 61:14.

Dan Eddy of Alexandria, VA had a 3-2 record against Richard Adams and with their top five races takes fifth place with a Moreland Racing Factor of 115 to Adams' 110.

60-64 Men
DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K, 37:00

Ronnie Wong of Catonsville, MD hurries toward one of his more than fifty age group wins since turning sixty

Patrick Griffith started the year, as he has for the last ten years, in first place, gliding to another win at the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K in 38:33. 2006 was his year to be nationally ranked at the top. His retirement plans included a move down to Ocala, FL. He traveled north to treat himself to a Pike's Peek race where he was the record holder in both the 55-59 and the 60-64 divisions. He runs a very solid 38:59, though well off his record of 37:39. Lo and behold, Michael Hazilla of Germantown, MD comes out and blasts a 37:00 and then Chuck Moeser wrenches his other record away with an incredible 33:47. The magician Hazilla also raced Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile in 62:16 before disappearing in a puff of smoke.

With Griffith away, Jason Page, the 5K gunslinger, shuffled forward. He Apple Blossomed his way to a 38:36 10K as well. He nibbled at the lead, winning the Germantown 5-Miler in 30:49. Finally in June, he toppled the king at the Tim Harmon 5K in 18:20 to win the crown. Ronnie Wong races too much for his own good. That must be why he won 47 times this year. He matched rival John Kirkpatrick of Annapolis to the second with their best races. Kirkpatrick's race was the AS Anniversary 15K in 61:46 in December 2006. Wong was second at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 66:32. After that, it all went right for Wong. He won head to head at the Dawson's 10K and never looked back. Always a marathon specialist, he ran 15 throughout the year winning nearly all of them.

Bernard Wright of Pomfret, MD took fifth finishing third at Cherry Blossom in 67:06. Jim Noone of Fairfax, VA was sixth, winning his age group two dozen times. His Credit Union Cherry Blossom was in 68:14. Forty-seven runners qualified.

Dash for Deaf Education 5K, 19:43, 10K = 41:08

Mel Williams (69) of Norfolk, VA has run all thirty-two Marine Corps Marathons and owns two Virginia State age groups in the marathon.

This year's top three were ultra close. Lou Shapiro never met a race he did not like and won 39 of them from 5K to the marathon. He was ranked first in two periods and finished second in two periods. His best race was the DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K in 41:49. John Elliott of Columbia, MD took the winter period with a swift AS Anniversary 15K in 63:34 back in December 2006 and it almost held up for him. Elliott is into triathlons, both winter and summer, so he did not put full concentration to road racing. His three best races were that season.

Jim Becker of Greencastle, PA came prancing in with some showy 5Ks that put away Elliott's 20:24. Starting in June he lofted a 20:18. Showing some range, he preempted Shapiro's Marine Corps Marathon win at 3:31:21 with his Under Armour Baltimore Marathon two weeks earlier in 3:31:17. In addition, a day before Shapiro's run, he pops off a 20:17 5K with marathon legs. Then in November, he cracks the final hurdle with the fastest 5K in 19:43 to win the division. Shapiro also ran the Harris Teeter Leesburg 20K in 1:28:21.

Skip Mullaney of Charlottesville, VA keeps last year's runner- up Jack Pitarra of Baltimore, MD at bay with his hometown HM in 1:35:42. Pitarra ran the Ashland 10K in 43:22. Warren Prunella of Rockville, MD was second at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:12:32 for sixth place.

Fleet Feet HM, 1:41:27, 10K = 46:02

Richard Williams of Alexandria, VA moved out to California to take on the best of the west

Nobody overmatches Richard Williams of Alexandria, VA in quantity. He won his division an amazing 40 times, racing almost every week. He was the man for most of the year, winning Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:17:53. He took down what he thought was his chief threat, beating Chan Robbins at the Annapolis "heat trials" 10 Mile in August. He had run a swift 22:38 Shamrock 5K in March and was looking good.

As the year wore on, Robbins started racking up fast 5Ks. By the middle of fall, he had bested Williams's best time five times, including a 22:15 on Labor Day. Duane Lougee of Norfolk, VA opened with a 37:15 8K in June. He had 11 age group wins but none were threatening the leaders. Then in October, he produced a monster half marathon in 1:41:27 to take the title. Williams did regain the 8K best in November with a 37:11 at the Semper Fit Turkey Trot 8K. Soon after, he and his new bride, the former Jane Poole, moved to the west coast. Tom Ray of Kitty Hawk, NC earns fourth place when he came north to follow Williams home at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:18:32. Later in June at the Lawyers Have Heart 10K, they battled again, Williams finishing 48:14 to 48:32.

Philip Hager of Falls Church, VA joined the division with a win at the Parkway 10 Mile in 1:20:12 for fifth place. Winter champion Maynard Weyers, with his Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K in 48:40, is sixth.

DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K = 50:59

Jack McMahon of Rockville, MD got a head start on the competition, notching out a handful of overall wins in the winter. He knew George Yannakakis was coming. McMahon had 20 wins but in this division every year makes a huge difference. Yannakakis was young and fresh and he rolled through the division with the top nine times. He did not come south often but in March he put paid to the division winning the St. Patrick's Day 8K in 40:22. McMahon's effort was not so lucky at 43:53, his 13th best race. Still, his Pike's Peek 10K win in 53:05 just beat Yannakakis's worst race by a whisker.

Larry Dickerson had one fast 5K at the Daisy in 24:30, which was a bit short. His other efforts landed him squarely in third place. These guys have been battling back and forth for more than a dozen years. Edward Green had a special effort at the Arlington 9-11 5K in 25:28, which put him in front of Nianxiang Xie's Pike's Peek 10K in 54:35.

He traditionally runs the Twilight 8K (48:14). Then he took on the Home Run 10K down Montrose Road at the end of September for one of the last times anyone will be traveling that road due to construction. In November, he paced himself through King Farm for the Rockville 10K in a speedy 56:23. Last year's champion Paul Lackey fell off the pace a little, finishing third with a Race for Hope 5K in 32:02
