March/April 2008
For the Washington Running Report

Open Women
Shamrock Festival 8K, 25:58, 10K = 32:58

Laura Turner (27) of Washington, DC runs an excellent fourth overall at the Shamrock HM with 1:17:17.

Even with the defection of many of the top runners from last year, the Open division grew to an enormous 66 runners. The year started out divisive with 11 different runners having one of the top 11 times. Then in the spring, Tatiana Chulakh came out and dominated. Her best of four races, all run in the spring, was a DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K victory in 33:18.

When she left, Belainesh Gebre quietly moved up from 11th place to totally dominate the second half of the year. After September 1, she broke the tape nine of the ten races she ran. At the Labrecque 5K, her only "defeat," she was second overall in 16:28, well ahead of Chulakh in fifth with 17:26. She then put away the title with a knockout punch winning the Baltimore HM in 1:14:45.

Maria Elena Calle of Richmond, VA takes the runner-up spot with her 34:23 at the largest 10K in the region, the Ukrop's Monument Avenue. She also won the Colonial 3 Mile in 16:29 in the winter. The next three runners had many great races and often their order was mixed up but, generally speaking, they finished: Mengistu Hirut first, Teyba Naser next, followed by Alemgena Desta. Sometimes it seemed they were just playing but when they were serious, look out. Naser had eight overall wins. Hirut bested the other two at Pike's Peek, finishing in 34:28. Naser had her best race at the most competitive event. At Susie's Cause 5K in October she won in 16:39, followed by Hirut in 16:41 with Desta in third with 16:44. Desta's second best race was her win over Teyba at Pike's Peek 35:01 to 35:40. Hirut was second at GW Parkway in 57:56 while Teyba's second effort was an overall win at the National Press Club in 16:46.

Laura Turner of Washington, DC had a fine Shamrock HM in 1:17:17 for sixth place. Sub master Susannah Kvasnicka of Great Falls, VA ran her last "open" race at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 59:05. She backed that up with her Army 10 Mile in 59:11 to secure the place from Melissa Tanner of Bethesda, MD, who ran Pike's Peek in 35:31. Briana Whaley of Culpeper, VA ran the Ukrop's Monument Avenue10K in 35:40 to match exactly tenth place Alisa Harvey's overall win at the 5K in 17:08. Whaley gets the nod because her second race was a 1:19:04 Shamrock HM for seventh overall. Middle distance ace Harvey took on the half at Parks and produced a 1:26:49, albeit one of her slowest races. Sixty-six runners qualified.

19 & Under Women
Potter Homes YMCA Turkey Trot 5K, 16:36, 10K = 34:43

Anna Oleynik of Gaithersburg, MD has her best race again at DARCARs Pike's Peek 10K. Here she wins her division at Sallie Mae

Last year's champion, Aurora Scott of Chesapeake, VA, only ran two races. They were fast ones: the Dismal Swamp HM in 1:17:25 in April as runner-up followed two weeks later by the Blair Clipper and an overall win in 17:15. Had she qualified she would have been well back of this year's champion, Belainesh Gebre of Washington, DC. Gebre won her division in all 14 of her races, including 11 overall wins. She stumbled slightly in the spring finishing sixth overall at the GW Parkway 10 Mile in 60:49 and then seventh overall at Pike's Peek in 35:43.

By fall, she was going full speed, winning five of six races in September outright and finishing second at the Labrecque 5K in 16:28. Then in October, she capped the year winning the Baltimore HM in 1:14:45 (10K = 33:47). Those last two races would have qualified her for the men's Open division.

Anna Oleynik of Gaithersburg, MD had the next five best races with three overall wins. She ran with the big dogs at Pike's Peek, finishing in ninth overall in 37:04. The next three spots are very close with 12 of the next 15 times going to these runners. All of them were overall wins. Jane Gay of Roanoke, VA is next with four wins in 5Ks in times ranging from 18:42 to 18:55. Halsey Sinclair of Silver Spring, MD is fourth with three wins with the slowest time being 18:59. She upset Oleynik at the Azalea 5K 18:46 to 18:53 for her fastest time. The sixth spot goes to Heidi Peterson of Williamsburg, VA. Just 13, she has five overall victories ranging from 18:49 to 19:01.

Just off the radar, Brittany Rooks of Baltimore, MD, also 13, ran a swift 18:48 win at Goucher College in October to join the lucky seven.

This division got huge adding a dozen more runners for a total of 39. Last year's champion Cindy Conant of Kensington, MD did not slow down much. Her age group win at the Veteran's Day 10K this year in 40:22 would have been the fourth fastest time last year. This year was much more competitive and she was shoved back to sixth place as a footnote with the 25th fastest time.

Linda Foley of Oak Hill, VA aged up in March and took down the division crown with a swift Shamrock Half Marathon win in 1:23:47. Andrea Wright of Charlottesville, VA had a swift hometown 10 miler in 64:36. Foley matched it with a GW Parkway 10 Mile in April at 64:33. Wright took her best shot at the crown running the nTelos 8K in 30:11 in November. The very next day Foley won the masters division at the Veterans Day 10K in 38:46.

Leisa Ensle of Virginia Beach, VA was ninth overall at the Shamrock Marathon in a speedy 3:07:00. A month later, she had her best race of the year at the Dismal Swamp Stomp HM in 1:26:39. Vanessa Cox earned the fourth spot besting Conant at Pike's Peek with 39:22 and at Credit Union Cherry Blossom with 1:05:45. Laura Shannon of Williamsburg, VA waited till the last week of the year to earn the fifth spot with her Governor's Land 5K in 19:03.

Ramilia Buranuglova of Gainesville, VA had that world class win at the Shamrock HM. Martha Merz joined the division too late to qualify for the year. However, her three best races topped all of the reticent Lee DiPietro's fine races. DiPietro has always won when she qualified. Soon, she will join the ranks of the grandmasters.

50-54 Women
Washington, DC Masonic Veterans Day 10K, 41:12

Deborah Flynn (51) of Gaithersburg, MD had a great summer capped off with a swift 20:35 at the Kentland/Lakelands 5K on Labor Day.

Betty Blank of Falls Church, VA was content to battle with Alison Suckling for the division title. Along came Ofelia Perotti of Alexandria, VA. Blank said, "You know she is running a whole lot faster than she used to." Well, she needed to if she wanted the crown.

Suckling started the year off besting third place Blank and fourth place Deborah Flynn of Gaithersburg, MD at the Al Lewis 10 Mile. In the spring, things unraveled as Perotti handily beat Blank in the 5K. Suckling won the division, racing Pike's Peek in 41:32. In the summer, Suckling was off her game. Blank stepped up with the fastest 20K of the year at Leesburg in 1:29:15. Perotti was feeling her oats and had an even faster half marathon in 1:33:21 at Rock 'n' Roll with a couple of kicker 5Ks that were too fast for Blank. Flynn made her move with a 20:35 on Labor Day.

The big races bring out the top runners and the fall race to run was the Veterans Day 10K in West Potomac Park. Blank, with 23 age group wins, was looking forward to a 10K triumph as she had over Suckling at the Lawyers Have Heart. The weather was great for the swift course. Perotti took off and the rest of the field was fighting for runner-up. She won in an Open qualifying 41:12 to win the crown for the year. Suckling beat Blank by 30 meters to get the runner-up spot.

Dorothy Winn of Norfolk, VA won the Larchmont Rat Race 5K in 20:37 to take fifth place. Nancy Ferris of Goode, VA was right behind her, running the Percival's Island Five Miler in 34:14. Look for Betty Blank to dominate the 55-59 division come spring.

55-59 Women
Truro Preschool & Kindergarten 5K, 21:03, 10K = 43:50

Deborah Gebhardt (59) of Adelphi, MD has her three best races in the spring after winning her division at the Suntrust Bank National Marathon.

After two years as the champion, Sandra Adams of Winchester, VA ran an impressive 44:01 at the Apple Blossom 10K and then vanished. In fact, four of the top five from last year did not qualify this year. Four of the top six runners were 59 and two aged up during the year. There were four different champions during the year.

Barbara Mathewson, who was third last year, had a swift 44:46 to command the winter but did not qualify for the year. Franks stepped it up to win the spring. She won a close battle with runner-up Deborah Gebhardt at the GW Parkway 10 Mile 1:15:10 to 1:15:53. Gebhardt returned the favor in a spirited Sallie Mae 10K battle 45:53 to 46:03, but Franks had already won the title. Her win at Credit Union Cherry Blossom in 1:14:50 and her swift DARCARS Pike's Peek 10K in 44:55 did the job.

Franks had 20 wins but in the summer Nancy Crippen prepared for the new division by winning the Run for Shelter 5K in 22:17 for the fastest 5K among qualifiers. It earned her fourth place. Linda Gulick of Richmond, VA waited until November to fall into the division title at the nTelos 8K in a swift 36:24 to win the third spot. Maria Shields of Davidsonville, MD was oh so close with an excellent Dawson's 10K in the summer in 46:30.

60-64 Women
Washington, DC Masonic Veterans Day 10K, 45:02

Already in 2008, Dee Nelson of Gaithersburg, MD was the overall winner at the Walnut Hill 5K

Nancy Crippen came out blazing hot in the summer to snatch the period from regular Chris Craun. Like last year, Craun won three of the four periods. She had the top ten races of the year. Her best three 10Ks in the first half were better than Crippen's best race, a 37:26 5 miler. Just in case, she laid down the hammer with two more swift 10Ks in November to makes things clear. She followed her 46:05 win on the hills and turns of Rockville with a swift 45:02 at the Veterans Day 10K the following weekend.

Jane Poole Williams, who has moved to the west coast, ran a ton of races with a dozen wins, including the Army 10 Mile and her fastest race, the Baltimore HM, in 1:48:06. Perhaps her most competitive race was at the Annapolis 10 Miler where she keyed in on Craun and came up just short 1:22:09 to 1:21:49. She split the year in two divisions.

Betty Brothers of Virginia Beach, VA jumped into the division just before Williams. She blasted a fine Hampton Bay Days 10K in 48:15 to capture the runner-up spot. Pat Welch of Vienna, VA ran an excellent Harris Teeter Leesburg 10K in 50:51 pushing her well ahead of all her other races. Andrea Hess of Midlothian, VA answered back the following week with a 1:52:24 at the Lynchburg HM to narrowly win the fourth spot. Mega racer Dee Nelson of Gaithersburg, MD (in Photo) used her 29 age group wins to muscle into sixth place.

Shamrock Festival Half Marathon, 1:48:26, 10K = 49:00
Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10 Mile, 1:21:32, 10K = 49:00

Joan Coven of Williamsburg, VA fully controlled the division with easily the top seven times in the division. She ran two 5Ks in 23:44 in the fall, which were three and one-half minutes faster than the next best 5K. Her half marathon in the spring was even faster.

Molly Sherwood had that 5K in Annapolis nudging just in front of Betty Smith's Run for the Roses 5K in the summer. Still, the next three spots in this division were decided by the 10-mile distance. At Credit Union Cherry Blossom, Nancy Linck was the fourth fastest in 1:33:59 ahead of Rosemary Schwartzbard (1:35:49) and Betty Smith (1:36:49). Then in the summer, Linck improved on the hilly Annapolis 10 Mile in 1:33:46. Smith was next in 1:42:38 with Sherwood following in 1:47:07. Sherwood was awarded second in the race with her chip time. Smith, with her nine age group wins, narrowly stays ahead of her.

Schwartzbard added the Baltimore Half Marathon in 1:27:10 to move into fifth place. Arlowene Garland of Warsaw, VA ran her best race at J'Brians Taproom Challenge 5K in 27:42 to finish the six-pack.

70-74 Women
Tami Graf of Lusby, MD (in photo) had a full year in the division and it was one long victory ride. She won all 38 of her races, including 28 of the top 32 races in the division. Her best race was the George Washington Parkway Classic 10 Mile in 1:34:39, 10K = 56:53. She had 21 of the 23 times with a 10K equivalent less than an hour. Nancy Fraser of Charlottesville, VA was next with a bunch of wins, including a 28:22 at the Virginia Institute of Autism 5K. She finished right behind Graf in two of the four periods.

In the spring, Margery Elliott busted the top two 10Ks to the win the period, which over matched Graf that period, but then Elliott again disappeared. Her 52:35 at Pike's Peek was the second fastest race of the year. Perhaps the top runner in the country, Susie Kluttz ran the top time with 25:01, which cremated Graf's official Virginia state record of 28:09. Nancy Patron of Williamsburg, VA had a solid fall and could challenge for the title in the coming year.
