Open Men
Seventeen runners qualified in the Open category, with Aurelio Handanga of Baltimore (and the country of Angola) taking the top spot. The decisive showdown was Baltimore's Run to Remember 5K, where Handanga (14:49) defeated Spring champion and third- ranked Wilson Komen (15:18) of Washington, DC (and Kenya). Handanga's performances also included a 23:57 at the Van Metre 5-Mile in Ashburn, Virginia, and a 1:07:13 at the Baltimore Half-Marathon, defeating fourth-ranked Paul Rades (1:10:14) of Silver Spring, Maryland.

The second spot goes to Alexey Khokhlov of Germantown, Maryland (and Russia). Khokhlov ran 2:20:44 at the SunTrust Richmond Marathon. Fifth is Ryan Mammen of Woodbridge, the top Virginia placer. His performances included a 51:45 at the Army 10-Miler.

The oldest runners to qualify for the Open rankings were 36- year-old Peter Sherry of Great Falls, Virginia and 37-year-old Alex Hetherington of Stafford, Virginia, and the youngest was 23-year-old Kevin Rhue of Richmond, Virginia.

Men 35 - 39
Summer champion Peter Sherry of Great Falls, Virginia, repeats in the Fall period. The rankings were decided in the Marine Corps Marathon, where Sherry (2:36:23) bested second-ranked Alex Hetherington (2:37:41) of Stafford, Virginia, and Spring champion and third-ranked Michael Mann (2:40:39) of Hampton, Virginia. Sherry also ran a 1:11:27 at Richmond's Ukrop's Cross- Country Festival Half-Marathon.

Alex Hetherington's times also included a 1:11:26 at the Quantico Half-Marathon, and Mann ran a 1:10:47 at the Mulberry Island Half-Marathon. Fourth is Pascal Brazey of Washington, DC, whose best performance was a 16:18 at Washington's Race for Cooperative Development 5K. Fifth-ranked Mike Colaiacovo of Columbia, Maryland ran a 21:25 at the BWI Airport Run 4-Mile. Sherry, Hetherington, and Mann also placed in the Open category.

Rob Hinkle of Newport News, Virginia, runner-up in the Summer rankings period, takes first in the Fall. Hinkle ran a steady series of fast 5K's, led by a 16:02 at Yorktown's Battlefield 5K.

Second is new 40-year-old Chris Hamley of Silver Spring, Maryland. Hamley ran 16:50 at Washington's Snoopy 5K to End Colon Cancer, beating fourth-ranked Ted Poulos (17:34) of McLean, Virginia.

Third is Summer champion Chris Chattin, who ran a 16:23 at Baltimore's Run to Remember 5K. Poulos gets fourth, by virtue of his 16:58 at Washington's PACE Race 5K, beating fifth-ranked Jean-Christophe Arcaz (17:03) of Rockville, Maryland.

Men 45 - 49
Winter champion Dan Lawson of Gaithersburg, Maryland, regains the top spot in the Fall. Lawson would also have taken first in the 40-44 age group. The showdown race was the Kensington 8K, where Lawson (27:06) defeated second-ranked Joe Abernethy (27:33) of College Park, Maryland. Lawson also ran a 16:14 at the Race for Cooperative Development 5K, and Abernethy ran 16:36 at the Rockville 5K.

Third-ranked Jim Hage of Kensington, Maryland, the Summer champion, also ran some fine times, including a 2:37:13 at the Baltimore Marathon. Fourth is Jim Bates of Hampton, Virginia, whose best time was a 16:57 at Williamsburg's Heritage Humane Society 5K. Fifth-ranked Keith Winn of Midlothian, Virginia ran a 2:00:22 at Spotsylvania's Stonewall Jackson 20-Miler.

The baby boom age groups are tough, and 18 runners qualified in the 50-54 group. Chuck Moeser of Sterling, Virginia, maintains his streak of first place rankings. Moeser earned his rank by running 33:42 at the Veterans Day 10K, beating second-ranked David Webster (35:22) of Stevensville, Maryland. Moeser also ran a 16:43 at Fairfax's Paul VI Runfest 5K.

Third is Richard Adams of Herndon, Virginia, whose best race was a 29:28 at the Fair Lakes 8K. Bill Alto of Newport News, Virginia, gets the nod for fourth over Jim Goggin of Williamsburg, Virginia, based on Williamsburg's Harvest Day 5K, where Alto (18:40) defeated Goggin (18:49).

Men 55 - 59
The deepest division of all was the 55-59 age group, where 23 runners qualified. The state of Virginia dominates the category, with all of the top 11 runners coming from Virginia. Larry Coley of Chesapeake, Virginia, takes the top spot. The decisive race was the William & Mary Homecoming 5K, where Coley (19:14) defeated third-ranked Robert Wilson (19:34) of Toano, Virginia. In Yorktown's Battlefield 10-Mile, Coley (1:06:45) defeated fourth-ranked Steve Tyndall (1:08:40) of Yorktown, Virginia. Coley also rose to a challenge in the Heritage Humane Society 5K, where Coley (19:04) beat fifth-ranked Dale Abrahamson (19:10) of Yorktown.

Second-ranked Dan Murray of Keswick, Virginia, did not face any of the other top nine runners, but earns his ranking based on some fine performances, including a 30:07 at Richmond's nTelos 8K. Wilson gets the nod for third, based on the Mulberry Island Half-Marathon, where Wilson (1:30:45) beat fourth-ranked Tyndall (1:32:32) and fifth-ranked Abrahamson (1:32:39).

Patrick Griffith of Alexandria, Virginia, led the 55-59 age group for the first three ranking periods, so it is not surprising to see him atop the 60-64 category as he ages up. Griffith ran a 38:06 at the Veterans Day 10K, and a 46:30 at Fredericksburg's Riverbank 12K.

Second is Summer champion John Kirkpatrick of Annapolis, Maryland, who earned the spot by running 3:26:42 at the Marine Corps Marathon, to defeat third-ranked Jim Noone (3:38:56) of Fairfax, Virginia. Noone gets third on the strength of his 20:25 at the Terrapin Trot 5K, beating fifth-ranked Roger Kilgore (20:54) of Great Mills, Maryland.

Spring champion Jerry Warfield of Columbia, Maryland takes fourth, based on his 20:13 at Columbia's Police Pace 5K, beating Kilgore (20:37).

An impressive 18 runners qualified for the Fall period. Winter champion John Elliott of Columbia, Maryland regains the top spot. The decisive race was the Navy Federal 5K in Vienna, Virginia, where Elliott (20:29) defeated third-ranked Ken Quincy (23:16). Elliott also ran a 33:26 at the Back to School 8K in Chevy Chase, and a 1:09:31 at the Army 10-Miler.

Spring champion and second-ranked Cal Fowler of Keswick, Virginia, did not face another ranked runner, but earns the second spot on the basis of his times, including a 32:43 at the nTelos 8K. Quincy takes the third spot on the basis of competition defeated, over fourth-ranked Dick Pierce of Rescue, Virginia, whose times include a 21:53 at the CNU 5K.

The 2003 champion, Art Morey of Columbia, Maryland, is fifth. His best time was a 46:15 at the B&A Trail 10K in Glen Burnie, Maryland.

Men 70 - 74
The 2003 and Winter champion, Jack McMahon (photo) of Rockville, Maryland, again claims first. McMahon faced off twice against third-ranked Robert Smith of Comus, Maryland. At the Kentlands- Lakelands 5K, McMahon (24:26) beat Smith (25:02), and he did it again at the Kensington 8K (41:13 for McMahon vs. 42:40 for Smith).

Summer champion and second-ranked Larry Dickerson of Burke, Virginia, competed against fourth-ranked Tony Measham of Chevy Chase, Maryland, with Dickerson (25:08) coming in ahead of Measham (25:52). Smith (25:35) beat Measham (26:24) at the Rockville 5K to claim the third spot.

Fifth is the Spring champion, Jerry Lewis of Reston, Virginia, whose best effort was a 23:25 at Washington's MMRF Race for Research 5K. Lewis did not compete against any of the other top nine runners.

2003 champion, Nianxiang Xie of Rockville, Maryland, leads the age group for the third consecutive time. His performances included a 1:30:45 at the Army 10-Miler, and a 44:25 at the Kensington 8K. Second-ranked Joseph Rutkowski of Dundalk, Maryland, ran a 2:08:08 at the Baltimore Half-Marathon.

Third is Harry Carlson of Newport News, Virginia, who ran a 29:23 at the Hilton 5K in Newport News, and fourth is Oliver Bragg of Sterling, Virginia, whose times include a 54:01 at the Van Metre 5-Mile. Fifth-ranked Burton Squires of Rockville, Maryland had a 32:04 at the Candy Cane 5K in Chevy Chase, Maryland.

Walt Washburn of Vienna, Virginia again dominates the category, defeating both of the other rankers in head-to-head competition. Washburn ran 30:48 at Arlington's Trick or Trot 5K, defeating second-ranked Henryk Bukowski (32:06) of Falls Church, Virginia. They faced off again at the Veterans Day 10K, where Washburn (1:00:20) again beat Bukowski (1:07:18). Washburn (30:59) defeated third-ranked Bill Osburn (46:32) at Fairfax's Goblin Gallop 5K. The oldest qualifier was 84-year- old Henryk Bukowski.
