2005 Autumn WRR Runner Rankings
Men's Division
By James Moreland January/February 2006 Washington Running Report
Photo above: Paul Rades (33) of Wheaton, MD is ranked 22nd in
the Open division.
Open Men
Runners' MRF scores are reported in parentheses next to their
names.
Andrei Gordeev (58), take it away! He set the Virginia marathon
record in an astounding 2:14:32 (10K = 28:52). His second race
was a pedestrian stroll of 15:18 (10K = 31:55) to win the Goblin
Gallop. Brian Godsey (92) beat Wilson Komen (70) at the Thomas
G. Labrecque Classic 19:04 to 19:11. Still, Komen gets the
runner-up spot. Komen had just too much; racing the Baltimore
Marathon in 2:20:28 (10K = 30:09) just twenty seconds off the
state record. Godsey's best race was a swift Police Pace 5K
overall win in 14:36 (10K = 30:27). With long and lithe strides,
Komen made his 30:25 Veterans Day 10K win look inevitable.Matt Barresi (36) stole fourth place thunder with his rocket-
like Great Allegany 15K in 46:23 (10K = 30:04), hill modified to
30:55. Barresi's second race was an easy-going 15:19 (10K =
31:58) for third place at the Laurel 5K. Eric Post (54) grabs
the five spot with a third overall at Marine Corps. His 2:23:54
(10-K = 30:53) would often have brought home a winner in past
years. Post was runner-up at Fair Lakes in 25:22 (10K = 32:11). Sixth place Philippe Rolly (71) had a tough fall. He seemed in a
somber mood. He won his age group at Veterans Day 10K in 31:39
and the following week returned to West Potomac Park to win the
MMRF Run for Research 5K in 15:32 (10K = 32:24). Aaron Saft (27)
was third at Richmond in 2:27:37 (10K = 31:41) to edge two top
5K runners. Carlos Renjifo (17) is next for his third place spot
at the Police Pace in 15:10 (10K = 31:38). John Bitok (31) is
number nine with his runner-up spot at the Laurel 5K in 15:14
(10K = 31:47). Michael Wardian (84) was five seconds back of
Bitok's runner-up spot at Suzie's Cause 5K, 15:19 to 15:24 (10K
= 32:07). That equivalent matched his Veterans Day 10K race.

19 & Younger Men
These young guys are running a slew of 5Ks and lots of them
below 17:00. Drew Abernethy of College Park, MD has the top
effort, finishing second overall at the Cardinal 5K in 16:31
(10K = 34:31). His second time was on the rugged MCRRC Derwood
cross-country course. His impressive 35:42 beat everyone there,
including his dad Joe, who was runner-up. Matt Klaschus has a
slight edge in time with his third overall Ecology 5K in 16:44.
Andrew Madison gets the runner-up spot with his two 5Ks,
Terrapin Trot in 16:45 and the week previously the Run for Kathy
as overall winner in 16:46.Christopher Moody is the second teen at the Terrapin Trot,
finishing in 16:48. Devon Gillet copped the fifth position with
his Metric 5K in 16:53, second overall.

group at the Goblin Gallop 5K.
Where have all the sub masters gone? The division was cut in
half. We do know that Michael Mann has been injured. It is a
tough division to handicap this time. Max Lockwood (48) has
eight age group wins and the best 5K and the best 10K. His Van
Metre runner-up spot in 26:10 (10K = 33:00) is the fastest
qualified runner time. Alex Hetherington (55) has six age groups
wins and the top 20M, HM and at Marine Corps the top race as
well, running 2:35:23. Hetherington gets the call even though
his best race, the Mulberry Island HM is 73:16 (10K = 33:15).
Both of his half marathons are overall wins and he has two more
overall wins and two second overalls. Lockwood's 5K was probably
short, though he also had two overall wins and two second
overalls.Stavros Rologas is third with two Baltimore 5Ks, including the
United Way in 16:25. Mike Colaiacovo set the standard for four
milers at the BWI Airport Run in 21:37 for fourth. At fifth,
Yancy Hall followed Lockwood home at the Veterans Day 10K in
34:30. West Virginian Brad Rippey slides down the Great Allegany
15K in 52:58 for sixth place.

It must be time the shuffle the cards. It is the same top three
but the order has changed. Or at least have should have been
until Dennis Mickey busted the Great Allegany in 49:19 (10K =
31:58) with a hill graded 10K of 32:53. Mark Stickley earns the
top spot with his 25:46 (10K = 32:41) Fair Lakes 8K win. He also
ran the PVI Runfest in 15:49. The GAR 5K equivalent,
being a third of the real time, would be 16:27 for Mickey.
Hinkle, best known as a 5K specialist, spread his talents up to
the 10K. Still, his best effort was the season ending Governor's
Landing 5K in 16:00.John Piggott was told early to go long and he does it as well as
anyone. After last period's Labor Day 71:54, his Blue Gray HM
time of 74:32 might have seemed disappointing. This preparation
served him well as he ran a fine 2:35:59 (10K = 33:28) Baltimore
Marathon just back of Hinkle's (10K = 33:23). Christopher Hamley
gains the top five with the fastest 10M, Seaside in 56:21, and
the fastest 10K, Veterans in 34:30, both the best of the period.

Men 45 - 49
Photo by Brightroom.com: Finley Mears (49) of Towson, MD is
ranked 25th in his division.
Maybe a touch of controversy this time as Greg Cauller is not
such a clear-cut champion. Dave Berardi has climbed the steps
and knocked on the 45-49 age group door. Cauller had started the
period with a 16:30 St. Joseph Medical Center 5K win. The
following week Berardi matched him with a 16:30 of his own at
the PVI Runfest 5K. No need to speak of 10K equivalents here.
October 2nd Berardi ran the very hilly HCS Metric Marathon in
Columbia. His 1:34:32 (10K = 34:01) got him first dibs at the
usual fine spread of food after he broke the tape. Meanwhile,
Cauller raced with his wife at the also very hilly Great
Allegany 15K in Cumberland. The difference here is that the
hilly is all down hilly. Cauller finished in 49:41 (10K = 32:12)
Normally, the edge of that race makes the 10K exactly two-thirds
of the real time or 33:04. Berardi's 75:35 Baltimore HM makes a
compelling argument, as does his MRF of 52 vs. 24. The title
stays with Cauller as Berardi's fourth race left him 14 seconds
back of Cauller at St Joseph's.Brian Daugherty of Annapolis is back, beating everyone at the
OSMC Halloween run in 16:42 and winning his age group at the B&A
Trail 10K in 35:40. Joe Abernethy still has the stuff, again
winning the Rockville 5K this time in 16:49. Jim Hage remains in
the top five, just missing the 22:03 4-mile record set by the
absent Dan Lawson. His Thomas G. Labrecque Classic time of 22:06
equals a 35:20 10K. A new name, Keith Winn of Midlothian, VA, is
pressuring his peers for a place, winning the Virginia Naturally
5K in 17:10.

Men 50 - 54
The charming Chuck Moeser (30) is down to two Best of 2005
distances, both hilly courses-Annapolis 10M and Colonial HM.
Stephen Chantry (45) is everywhere, picking up racing titles.
His top three races all include sub-35:00 10K equivalents. His
27:02 at nTelos 8K erased Moeser's Fair Lakes 8K in 27:39 from
the books. Chantry's 16:30 for the Mulberry Island 5K beat every
runner that day. Moeser's answer was a 17:02 Herndon Turkey Trot
5K. Chantry owns two-thirds of the top nine times and holds the
title for a second period. Third place James Cooper (44) with five age group wins is right
in the Moreland Racing Factor mix though his best race was the
Page's Run 5K in 17:38. Mike Hart (50) has the highest MRF with
his five races. His prowess includes three Major races and a
second overall in his five age group victories as well as the
best 4M and 20M of the year. Bruce Hamilton, known primarily as
a middle distance runner with a 2:12 800M time this year, ran
17:49 at the Race for Cooperative Development 5K.

Photo by Brightroom.com: Mick Slonaker (56) of Columbia, MD
is top dog grand master for the Howard County
Striders.
Doc Weiss must have taken a sleeping pill cause he woke up in
time to run just one race for the period. His Cox Communications
HM in 1:25:43 is nearly the Best of 2005. It was better than the
champion Rick Platt's Mulberry Island HM in 1:26:28, but that
was Platt's eighth best time. Runners eyeing the return of Steve
Ruckert are hoping he only runs one race each period after his
17:32 Metric 5K in Columbia. In the meantime, Platt charged
through the fall like a man possessed. He had the top five
times; including the nTelos 8K in 29:11 (10K = 37:01) and the
Hilton 5K, precariously close to breaking 18:00. Sadly, Platt
injured his back and will be taking a rest break.Mick Slonaker travels a bit and his competition hopes he stays
away when he runs his best races. No luck. He rode the rolling
switchbacks of the Rockville 10K to a 38:29 and the Veterans 10K
to 38:49. He ended the period with his first 4-miler, racing the
Thomas G. Labrecque Classic in 24:43 for the Best of 2005.
Daniel Ennis of Richmond, VA narrowly slips into third place
with two 5K wins. His Midlothian Blaze was run in 18:39. Tim
Morgan spent most of year getting ready for his fall birthday
and a shot at the Marine Corps Marathon title. He settled for
3:19:14, just four seconds ahead of Jay Wind. Both runners had
expected far better times. Morgan shook it off and booked to an
18:37 win at the TLC King of the Road 5K in Rockville just three
weeks later. The rest of the top ten were nearly glued together,
with Jim Wright breaking off a 39:44 at the Veterans Day 10K for
fifth place.

Men 60 - 64
Photo: Bill Joyce of Herndon, VA, seventh in the 60-64
division.
Patrick Griffith (57) does not take his crown for granted. He
works hard to maintain it. He trains and he keeps his eye on the
competition. Normally, this would mean turning around to look or
even listening for footsteps. No, the top runners in the
division rarely meet. Of the top 28 times, all are age group
wins. The top16 times are divided among three runners. All nine
of Patrick's races are wins. He owns eight distances in the Best
of 2005. He wins the division by erasing the 5-mile best
formerly held by third place Dan Murray (29) of Keswick, VA.
Murray has been Griffith's only Achilles heel in the last five
years. Griffith ran 29:51 in the pouring rain at the Van Metre
5M. In contrast, Murray ran 30:11 at the swift running nTelos
8K. Griffith also added a superb Veterans Day 10K in 37:56. Jason
Page (53) has his own ideas. He has two top-three finishes and
four sub-19:00 5Ks. His best time, at the Candy Cane 5K, was
18:10 (10K = 37:54), the second best race in the period. John
Kirkpatrick (21) has the next best time, running his two wins in
the Annapolis area. At the unusual Metric Marathon (26.2K) he
ran 1:52:03 (10K = 40:19). Then Ed Lecates swarmed over him with
a six-pack of wins. The slowest was a 19:44 at St Joseph's and
the best a 19:22 at Suzie's Cause after running a 19:29 the day
before at United Way.

John Elliott started early in September winning the Laurel 5K in
20:02 but he did not have a second race. Cal Fowler stepped up
to first, drawing Skip Mullaney with him. Fowler busted loose
with a monster nTelos 8K in 32:46 and Mullaney was next, barely
in sight, in 34:06. Both times were huge improvements from last
period. Fowler offers further proof, winning the Pepsi 10K in
43:26. Mullaney's second race was Buck Mountain 10K in 46:57.
Third place Stephen Forman stayed a little more consistent with

fourth with his Galax Autumn Days 5K in 21:55. Art Morey went to
Ocean City in October to run the Seaside 10 Mile in 77:48 for

Tom Ray did not add to any of his five best of 2005 race
distances. He did, however, have the top five times in the
division, again blowing away the competition. Terry McCarthy
lost to fourth place Jack McMahon the first week of the period
at the Fair Lakes 8K. Then he added five more races, all better.
His best, the Shenandoah Homecoming 5K in 23:54, was used to
ease by Chris Catoe for second place. Catoe ran the Holiday
House 5K in 24:02.

Men 80 & Above
Robert White ended the period with a fabulous 26:28 Governor's
Landing 5K, nipping John Hosner's best time of the year of
26:40. John Hosner is one of the top runners with numerous state
records of all time. White's Hilton 5K in 27:24 proves it was no
fluke. Walt Washburn is again second. He ran thirteen races and
won his age group nine times. Naturally some of the "non-wins"
were in cases of 70 & over and 60 & over age groups. The
division is as large as ever with nine qualifiers.
