There was a very tight battle for the crown of this division between Edmund Burke and Jason DeJoy. At the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, both ran 49:44 chip times, to finish 14th and 15th, representing the fastest time run by any man ranked in the open division this spring. DeJoy was technically over the line before Burke; however, since we use chip times in the rankings, we are considering the two equal for these purposes.

In the end, we chose to award the top slot to Burke, because his second qualifying time was faster than DeJoy's. Burke finished second at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, with a time of 31:06. Randallstown's DeJoy is runner-up in the men's open division this spring. The 49:44 performance put on by DeJoy at the Cherry Blossom was by far his best showing; however, he did also manage a 32:16 second overall finish at Pike's Peek 10K.

Third place in these rankings belongs to Andre Williams, who had two stellar showings this spring. Williams won the overall title at the Plaza America Family 5K in 14:45, and finished sixth in 30:16 at the Sallie Mae 10K for his best showing of the spring.

Christopher Banks, from Springfield, sneaks into the top five in fourth place this spring, a spot he well deserves for beating Burke to win the St. Patrick's Day 10K in 30:56. Banks also finished not far behind Williams at the Plaza America 5K, where he was third. At only 24, Banks is a four years younger than any other man ranked in the top five; thus we expect to see great things from him for years to come.

Finally, rounding out the top five is Glen Mays of Washington, who was fourth at both the St. Patrick's Day race and the George Washington Parkway Ten Miler, where he had his best race, crossing the line in 52:22. Mays also won the Maryland Day Run for Hospice.

Men 35 - 39
The men's sub-masters category is always a small division, and this spring was no exception. However, the fact that it is a small division does not compromise its quality. Mark Hoon of Kensington holds top honors this spring, a distinction he earns with two very solid ten-mile performances. Hoon's best race was, not surprisingly, the Cherry Blossom, where he ran 53:44 for the best time turned in by any man over 35. Hoon's second race was an eighth place finish at the George Washington Parkway Ten Miler, where he turned in the second fastest time run by any man in this group--a 55:34, still more than 35 seconds faster than the next fastest guy on record.

John Piggott, a mainstay in the southern reaches of our region, is ranked second this spring. He was second overall at the Shamrock Marathon, finishing the course in 2:38:35 for his best race of the year; however, he was also sharp at the Elizabeth River Run, where he cranked out a 34:35, good enough for second in his division, and 12th overall.

Ruther Glen's Greg West is our third ranked runner this spring, an honor he earned when he collected the fifth fastest time (behind Hoon and Piggott) this spring. West ran 27:16 at the John Robbins Organ Donor 8K, good enough for a fifth place finish.

Fourth place in this group belongs to Charles Powell, who was remarkably consistent this spring. Powell turned in a sixth place showing at the Port to Fort Four Miler in 21:38 (34:36 10K equivalent) and a fourth place finish at the Clyde's American 10K, where he ran 34:37.

Finally, the last berth among the top five in the sub-masters category, belongs to Michael Wilson of Leesburg, who earns his place by beating Ian Clements at the Sallie Mae 10K by just over a minute, finishing the course in 35:06 for his best race of the spring.

Men 40 - 44

Like many other groups, the top ranking in this division was hotly contested, and it was a tough call to name a winner. We have decided to honor Dave Berardi of Baltimore with the number one ranking because he ran the fastest time turned in by any man ranked in this group. Berardi's best time was a 53:22 at the Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, where he finished 25th overall. Our second ranked runner is Lanham's Jim Hage, who had quite a spring, beating Berardi at the Sallie Mae 10K, where he ran 32:48 to Berardi's 32:59. Hage also finished fifth at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, in 32:40 for his best race of the season.

Mark Malander had a great day on April 7 when he turned up for the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, where he ran 54:37, and was the third fastest man out there this spring, behind Berardi and Hage. Malander also ran 27:17, for a 12th place finish at the Shamrock 8K, another important spring race.

Ted Poulos, arguably the most prolific runner out there with 15 qualifying times this spring, matched quality with quantity and is our fourth ranked runner this spring. A few highlights from Poulos's season (aside from managing to run 15 qualifying races in ten weeks) include race victories at the Sandburg Pantherlon, Westfield 5K, and the Race for Technology Tomorrow 5K. His fastest race was the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, where he ran 55:02, and he was also on hand at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, the Run vs. Row, Capitol Hill Classic 10K, and Sallie Mae 10K, some of the largest and most important races of the spring.

Finally, the last spot in the top five belongs to Tim Silva, who had two qualifying times, including a spectacular top ten performance at the St. Patrick's Day race, where he beat great age group competition from Poulos, Bill McCormack, and Jean Christopher-Arcaz.

Men 45 - 49
There is little debate about the top performer in this division this spring. Gaithersburg's Dan Lawson grabbed the three fastest times run by men in this division--a 56:21 at the George Washington Parkway Ten Miler, a 34:04 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, and a 34:08 at the Pike's Peek 10K. Clearly, he is our number one runner in the men's 45-49 division for the spring rankings.

Second and third place in this division were decided in the southern portion of our region at the Elizabeth River Run 10K, which is one of the largest races in southern Virginia during the spring rankings. David McDonald and Jim Bates went head-to- head at this race, and McDonald edged Bates, 34:23 to 34:29, so we have given McDonald the second place ranking and Bates must settle for third. McDonald also finished 15th at the Shamrock 8K, where Bates won the Queen's Lake 5K.

Peter Kirk of Rockville was at his best at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, where he ran 57:21 for the best showing of any man eligible for a ranking in this group. Kirk had several other good races this spring, including a 35:20 at Clyde's American 10K, which was evidence enough that he is deserving of the fourth place ranking.

Finally, rounding out the top five in the division is David Webster, who tried valiantly to chase down Kirk at the Cherry Blossom, however, he was only able to manage a 58:15, so he must settle for the fifth place ranking. Webster also had a 35:14 finish at the Sallie Mae 10K and a 35:22 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K.

Men 50 - 54

Sterling's Chuck Moeser is quickly becoming a familiar name at the top of the men's 50-54 division, and this spring is no exception. Moeser, at age 50, is simply faster than anyone else in this division. His time of 56:10 at the Cherry Blossom is more than five minutes faster than the next competitor's time. Moeser's best race was a 33:35 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, and he was also 12th at the inaugural Washington DC Marathon, running across the line in 2:42:18.

Mick Slonaker is the runner-up in this division for the spring. Slonaker had the next fastest time behind Moeser, a 1:01:11 (36:49 10K equivalent time) at Cherry Blossom, and so it seems justifiable to award him the second place ranking, despite the fact that he was edged out by Bill Hart at the Shamrock 8K, where Hart ran 30:32 to Slonaker's 30:34. Hart's performance at the Shamrock race, coupled with a 37:06 at the Elizabeth River Run 10K, is enough to place him a very close third this spring.

Jay Wind, another of Washington's most prolific runners, is our fourth place finisher, a title he earns with a plethora of good races, including ten qualifying times at a wide variety of races, from 5Ks to the Washington DC Marathon. At age 52, Wind is still turning in sub-3:00 marathons, running 2:58:49 at the Washington race, and his best time was a 37:12 at the Capitol Hill Classic 10K on the last weekend of the ranking period.

Finally, Herndon's Richard Adams is the last man to gain entry into the elite top five in the division, a place he earned with a valiant effort to track down Wind at the Capitol Hill race, crossing the line in 37:19. Adams also had qualifying times at the Run vs. Row and the Pike's Peek 10K.

Men 55 - 59
Our top two runners in this division did battle on the spring's largest stage--the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler. Keswick's Dan Murray and Alexandria's Patrick Griffith lined up for competition on April 7, and Murray finished first, so he is our top ranked runner this spring, and Griffith must settle for the runner-up slot. Murray's 59:43 finish at the Cherry Blossom was nearly two minutes ahead of Griffith, who completed the course in 1:01:31. Murray, to his credit, also had a 29:34 performance at the Shamrock 8K. Griffith certainly should be proud of his spring performances as well. In addition to the Cherry Blossom, he had six other qualifying times, including very strong showings at the St Patrick's Day 10K (38:02) and the Pike's Peek 10K (37:48).

Chesapeake's Jeff Long has been awarded the third place ranking in this division. He ran 30:46 to finish behind Murray at the Shamrock 8K; however, his fastest time was a 37:44 at the Elizabeth River Run 10K.

Catonsville's Piriya Pinit and Ronnie Wong of Baltimore are the last two men to earn top five rankings in this group, honors they earned primarily as the result of their showings at the Cherry Blossom race. Pinit, who is ranked fourth, ran 1:03:38, while Wong went 1:04:50. To add to his credentials, Pinit also finished the Preakness 10K in 39:23, while Wong, our fifth ranked runner, was on hand at the Washington DC Marathon, where he ran 3:08:07 to finish in the top 100.

Men 60 - 64

John Elliott of Columbia is the only man in the men's 60-64 division to still be able to turn in sub-40:00 10K equivalent times. He did this not once, but twice. Elliott ran 39:15 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, and a 1:05:20 (39:19 10K equivalent) at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler. As a result of these performances, there is little doubt that Eliott is the number one runner in the 60-64 division.

Stephen Forman of McLean is our runner-up this spring, in recognition of his 1:08:20 at the Cherry Blossom. He backs up these results with a 41:58 at the Capitol Hill 10K and a 42:03 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K.

The third through sixth place rankings were determined largely by the results of the Cherry Blossom race. Chan Robbins of Arlington is our third ranked runner, Art Morey of Columbia is fourth, Antonio Panizza of Reston is fifth, and Bob Spearing is sixth. Robbins ran 1:10:06 at Cherry Blossom, a performance he backed up with a 33:49 at the Shamrock 8K. Morey, who crossed the Cherry Blossom finish in 1:11:39 also ran 44:24 at the Preakness 10K and 44:43 at Clyde's American 10K. Panizza streaked in behind Morey in 1:12:04 at Cherry Blossom, and also had a 43:52 at the Sallie Mae 10K. Finally, Spearing, who was less than 20 seconds behind Panizza, finishing Cherry Blossom in 1:12:23, finishes just outside the top five in sixth place.

Men 65 - 69
Tom Ray of Kitty Hawk is once again at the top of our rankings this spring. Ray had three qualifying times, including the fastest time run by any man in this division--a 44:01 at the Elizabeth River Run, which, in a division where there was not a great deal of head-to-head competition, was enough to earn him the top ranking.

Second place belongs to Maynard Weyers, who ran 44:53 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, an impressive showing for him. Weyers beat out age group competition from Robert Smith and Thomas Kurihara, placing him firmly in the runner-up position for the spring.

Third and fourth place were determined at the Credit Union Cherry Blossom Ten Miler, where Reston's Alan Rider and Alexandria's Richard Williams did battle. Rider came out ahead, finishing the course in 1:16:53, whereas Williams took 1:17:35 to complete the ten miles. Rider also ran the George Washington Parkway Ten Miler in 1:18:30 and the Pike's Peek 10K in 47:47. Williams, to his credit, ran the Shamrock 8K in 37:40 and the May Day 5K in 22:54.

Fifth place goes to Chris Catoe, who was on hand at both the Azalea Festival 8K and the Elizabeth River Run, both times beating age group competition from seventh ranked Duane Lougee.

Men 70-74
Only seven men in the 70-74 division earned the required minimum two qualifying times to gain a ranking. Leading the pack is George Yannakakis, who had five qualifying times, including the four fastest times run by men ranked in this division. Yannakakis had his best showing at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, running 44:56 to gain the only sub-45:00 10K run by this group. Yannakakis was also on hand at the Cherry Blossom, the Pike's Peek 10K, the Port to Fort 4 Miler, and the Preakness 10K.

Larry Dickerson of Burke is our second ranked runner in this group, finishing behind Yannakakis at both the St. Patrick's Day and Cherry Blossom races for his two fastest performances of the spring. At St. Patrick's, he finished in 46:13, and at Cherry Blossom ran 1:17:27.

Third place is owned by Jack McMahon, who grabs top three honors by coming in behind Yannakakis and Dickerson at St. Patrick's, and behind Yannakakis at Pike's Peek. McMahon's fastest race was a 47:39 at St. Patrick's; however, in head-to-head competition his most impressive result was an age-group triumph over Dickerson at the Capitol Hill 10K, to finish off the season on a high note.

The fourth position goes to Keith Olson, who also lined up at St. Patrick's, Cherry Blossom, and Pike's Peek. At St. Patrick's, he ran the 10K course in 48:43. At Cherry Blossom, he was beat by a mere eight seconds by our fifth ranked runner, Nianxiang Xie; however, at Pike's Peek, he beat Xie 50:11 to 50:43. Xie, our fifth ranked runner, who had only two qualifying times, was at his best at Cherry Blossom where he ran 1:22:00.

Men 75 & Over
This division gets more competitive each ranking period. This spring, 11 men turned in more than 40 qualifying times. Mel Mattson of Gainesville, who beat Arlington's Paul Lackey at the Plaza America 5K to secure top honors, leads this senior most group. Lackey, to his credit, clobbered the competition at the May Day 5K, where he ran 52:53, good enough to be the runner-up in this division.

Ray Blue, who was behind Lackey at the May Day race but won the division at the Sallie Mae 10K in a time of 56:01, captures the third ranking.

Perpetual age group rivals Bill Osburn and Walt Washburn only ran head-to-head once this spring, and Osburn came out ahead so we have given Osburn the fourth spot while Washburn must settle for fifth. Osburn ran the Plaza America 5K in 28:06, leaving Washburn out on the course for more than a minute after he finished. Osburn's fastest race, however, was a 56:16 at the St. Patrick's Day 10K, while Washburn's best showing came at the May Day 5K, where he ran 27:24.
