Potter Homes YMCA Turkey Trot 5K, 14:28, 10K = 30:11

In November at the Turkey Trot 5M, Matt Barresi [MRF 31] bested second place Chris Banks 25:23 (10K = 32:01) to 26:04 (10K = 32:52) as well as tenth place Jon Lauder 26:13 (10K = 33:04). To end December, Banks won the Red Ribbon 5K in 15:34 (10K = 32:28). Then in February, they met again at the GW Birthday 10K. Barresi prevailed in a near photo finish 31:31 to 31:33. The following week Banks took out his frustration, beating prolific long distance runner Michael Wardian at the Colonial HM 1:10:01 (10K = 31:46) to 1:12:05 (10K = 32:05). Normally Wardian runs a slew of races but in this ranking period ran only two in this area. His second race was the Ashburn 5K in 16:22 for the fourth spot.

Paul Spangler of Lexington, VA makes an unheralded dash to the top three with a swift Charlottesville 5K win to start the year in 15:36 (10K = 32:32). He also won the Charlottesville 4M in December in 20:56 (10K = 33:28). Fifth place Roberto Rodriguez was just off the third spot, racing the Red Ribbon 5K in 15:40 (10K = 32:42). He also played with the big boys at the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K in 33:00. Garth Terry easily won the Gar Williams HM in 1:14:54 (10K = 33:59). Then in late December, he rushed the extra distance on that same course for the Belle Haven 25K to win in 1:26:56 (10K = 32:48).

Carlos Renjifo takes the seven spot over ninth place Eric Furst by leading him to the finish line at the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile 54:44 (10K= 32:56) to 55:02 (10K = 33:07). George Probst split the two with his third place Red Ribbon 5K in 15:46 (10K = 32:53). Renjifo also won the Penguin Pace in 16:10 (10K = 33:43) and was second at the Celtic Solstice 5 Mile in 26:45 (10K = 33:44). Probst backed his play with the Lewis-Gale 5K win in 16:20 (10K 34:04). Furst was first at the BRRC Valentine 10K in 33:31.

Three runners dueled for the tenth spot. Jon Lauder won out with his 26:13 (10K = 33:04) at the Alexandria Turkey Trot. Douglas Marshall and Ryan Carroll both won 15:55 5K races. Marshall ran the Sentara Days in January and also won three other races. Carroll won another race as well.

19 & Younger Men
Red Ribbon 5K, 15:44,10K = 32:49

Sixteen-year-old Erik Anderson won the Super Bowl 5K in 16:07 (10K = 33:07). Who says you cannot go straight out of high school into the pros? Two weeks later, he was third overall at the BRRC Valentine 10K in 34:44. Jesse Jaeger and Matt Klaschus battled at the RRCA Challenge for the runner-up spot. Jaeger topped him 57:02 (10K = 34:19) to 57:59 (10K = 34:53). Christopher Kust is fourth, racing 17:01 (10K = 35:30) for second overall in the Santa Claus 5K. At the Peaks of Otter 10K, the youngest runner, Andrew Rigler (14), ran 35:58.

35 - 39 Men
Coolman's Last Stand 3.2 Mile, 15:43, 10K = 31:46

Max Lockwood of Washington, DC loves to race. With seven age group wins, it would seem he would be a lock to win the division. Racing mostly DCRRC and MCRRC club races, he was always a threat to win outright (twice) as well as being twice second and twice third overall. In December, his Jingle All the Way 10K in 33:57 put him mostly out of reach. His overall win at the Al Lewis 10 mile in 56:31 (10K = 34:00) sealed the bargain. John Lomogda of Norfolk, VA also won two races, one 5K cross- country, one on the roads. It is hard to judge how hard those races were. In March, his victory at the Run for Community was in 16:19 (10K = 34:02). Michael Mann is on the way back. He ran one 16:31 5K, while third place Ben Thomas ran two 16:31s for third place. Remus Medley won the NCT Marathon in 2:43:08 (10K = 35:00) for fifth place.

40 - 44 Men

Potter Homes YMCA Turkey Trot 5K, 15:48, 10K = 32:58

John Piggott of Williamsburg, VA is known for his rapacious hunger to race the marathon and especially the half marathon. Yet he also manages to race the swiftest 5Ks as well. His Potter Homes 5K was the second fastest 5K in 16:25 (10K = 34:15). In February, he quickly reverted to the half marathon, winning the East Beach in 1:14:29 (10K = 33:48) and then the Colonial in 1:15:11 (10K = 34:07). Runner-up Christopher Hamley won his age group eight times, just missing the ninth time against fourth place Mark Hoon at the RRCA Challenge 56:55 (10K = 34:15) to 57:34 (10K = 34:38). Hoon's other qualifier was a laid back 28:27 (10K = 36:05) at the MCRRC Jingle Bell Jog 8K. Hamley tried his hand at the B&A Half Marathon the week after the Challenge (from Hoon and the race) and mastered the distance in 1:15:08 (10K = 34:05).

Mark Junkerman of Williamsburg, VA pulled out all the stops and broke the tape at the Frostbite 15K in 52:32 (10K = 34:03) to earn third place. Chris Chattin matched Hoon's best race by running half the distance at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5 Mile in 27:11 (10K = 34:17). His second race, a 35:40 win at the Jingle all the Way 10K places him in fourth.

Jean Christophe-Arcaz moved on to the next division, but not before taking sixth, with his best races coming after aging up. Daniel List worked his magic at the Frostbite 15K in 53:06 (10K = 34:25). Ron Kulik ran 16:56 at the Red Ribbon 5K. Rodney Timpson nudged him back to ninth with his Super Bowl 5K in 16:55.

Photo: Paul Jacobson (42) of Potomac, MD started the year with an 18:06 5K for 27th place in the division.

45 - 49 Men
Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M, 26:56, 10K = 33:58

Greg Cauller, 2005 Champion, is taking a break, running just one race. Mark Malander is starting up again. Both will be near the top. Jean-Christope Arcaz has the rush of being new to the division. Jim Hage has been a national running icon for more than two decades. Robert Marino is back in town and Dave Berardi has a battle on his hands.

Berardi started off his rampage at the Turkey Trot 5M, setting the tone with 26:56 (10K = 33:58). Only 19th place Bill Stahr dared to follow and he was a half mile behind. In December, Jim Hage came to West Potomac Park to write the story for the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K. The story was Berardi would be tough to best. Hage ran 34:51; Berardi crossed the line in 34:08. In February, many of the top runners from the running clubs venture up to Columbia, MD for the RRCA Challenge. After the race Robert Marino expressed disappointment with his race. His time of 56:44 (10K = 34:08) was more than adequate, having Berardi forty meters in front of him at 56:35 (10K = 34:03) was not. Marino also started the year with an overall victory at the Father Time 5 Mile in 27:47 (10K = 35:01).

Arcaz, who had matched Hage's 10K of 34:51 at GW Birthday, was also at the Challenge. His 58:29 trumped Hage's Al Lewis 10 Mile in 61:23. Look for fifth place George Buckheit to gear up from his 35:35 GW Birthday 10K. Peter Searson of Baltimore, MD throws his hat into the ring with a swift 59:49 (10K = 35:59) at the RRCA Challenge.

50 - 54 Men
Photo: Neil Riemenschneider of Winchester, VA was 6th overall at the hilly cross-country LAWS 5K in March. He is ranked 23rd in the 50 - 54 division.

Sentara 5K, 16:31, 10K = 34:27

Three runners own the top 12 times. This period's champion, Stephen Chantry of Williamsburg, VA, had three of the top times. Still, even with his chief rival moving to his second retirement, Chantry will not have an easy time maintaining control. Chantry gunned out the period at the VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 35:17, which might not have been enough for the crown. Then he clinched the title with a blazing Sentara Days 5K on New Year's Day in 16:31 (10K= 34:27). In March, he raced the Run for the Community 5K in 17:03 (10K = 35:34). Spring is going to be fun!

Mike Hart has blitzed through the last six months, winning everywhere. This period he had seven age group wins and is often a threat to beak the tape first. He lost to his former training partner, Steve Ward, at the Gar Williams HM, running 1:19:44 and to third place Dan Lawson at the MCRRC Shooting Starr 5M, 28:48 to 29:20. These were his worst races. In January, he finished fifth overall at the DCRRC Al Lewis 10 Mile in 59:38 (10K = 35:47). Then he finished the period in late February with a fourth overall 1:33:32 (10K = 35:18) at the Belle Haven 25K.

Lawson is also adjusting to the next age group. His times will drop this spring below the 17:18 (10K = 36:05) third place overall finish he started the year with. Maurice Pointer of Baltimore, MD is still the sleek 130-pound racing machine. He always seems pleasantly surprised when he wins. We are not surprised. He is undefeated since turning fifty. He impressed everyone with a 17:38 (10K = 36:47) at the Super Bowl 5K. In December, he flashed through the toughest 5 mile in the area, the Celtic Solstice, in 29:24 (10K = 37:04). Norton Compton is fifth with a sub 6:00 pace 10K, GW Birthday in 37:08.

55 - 59 Men
RRCA Challenge 10 Mile, 63:11, 10K = 38:01

Tim Morgan wants that pesky crown. He has a pleasant smile and a friendly chuckle; that is, until they say, "GO!" He spent the winter winning race after race. His Super Bowl 5K in 18:36 (10K 38:48) was a sub 6:00 pace. Four of his five victories were at 5 miles, none of them flat. At the Celtic Solstice, he busted up his chief rival, Mick Slonaker, 30:11 (10K = 38:04) to 30:48 (10K = 38:48). If only he had taken off the rest of the period. No, Tim showed up at the RRCA Challenge to help his Montgomery County Road Runners. Mick is another of the polite smilers. He smiled a crocodile grin. Now we were on this former Howard County Strider president's home turf. He knows all the hills, all the turns. He has been running them all winter long. Morgan had a fine race in 64:59 (10K = 39:06), not forgetting to hold off that pesky Jim Wright, 65:30 (10K = 39:25). It was not enough. The title was decided exactly 63:11 (10K = 38:01) after the start of the race. Slonaker was the champion.

Ken Shipp of Great Falls, VA is from a running family. Many of his races are with his wife or his kids and his times seem "also ran." Then all of a sudden he feels it. At the By George 10K this year, Hains Point was calm. Shipp started slowly, like an ocean liner, but once he rumbled into full gear there was no stopping him. His 39:50 effort makes him a threat to move up from fourth place. Sixth place Dave Crawford runs tons of races, including seven age group wins. No doubt he was surprised as Shipp floated past him at the By George but there was little he could do, finishing in 40:15. Hans Tall had a best 10K at the massive VAB Turkey Trot 10K, besting eighth place Larry Coley 40:33 to 41:03. He won his five spot with a race three times as long. The time at the TS Tune-up 30K was 2:09:04 (10K = 40:00). Seventh place Dan Cantley tucked in behind Tall at the TS Tune- up 25K 1:46:46 (10K = 40:17) to 1:47:15 (10K 40:28).

60 - 64 Men
DCRRC Belle Haven 25K, 1:42:08, 10K = 38:32

This is usually the biggest division, which is fine by Patrick Griffith. That just means more subjects in his kingdom. Patrick always seems to have a lesser winter ranking period. He did have the two best times and four age group wins in only four races. The reason is that after winning the Gar Williams HM in 87:03 (10K = 39:30) and the year ending Red Ribbon 5K 18:32 (10K = 38:40), he headed south to his future home of Florida. Walt Disney thought they were ready for this perennial champion to win one of their races. Instead, on back-to-back days he won the Disney Half Marathon and Marathon too. By the end of February, he was ready to run the fastest race of the period, the Belle Haven 25K, in 1:42:08 (10K = 38:32).

Jason Page spent 2005 running sizzling fast 5Ks. This period he won lots of races but the distances of many of the Shenandoah Valley Runners races are suspect. Sometimes they are listed as 3.5M; sometimes 5Ks run like 3.25 or 3.3M. Knowing winks from the regulars let you know that the race was "at least" a 5K. At Ashburn in the November, he moved up to the 10K and found he could do just fine. His 38:46 was the third fastest race, and six age group wins has him fully in place to take over the throne if and when Patrick goes south.

John Kirkpatrick rules the east, winning the Cold Turkey 10K in 40:53 and celebrating Valentine's Day with a heart warming 20:13 5K win. Fourth place John Brittain has some sprinter's credentials, racing the fastest 400M of the year. On the roads, he impressed us with 34:14 (10K = 43:10) at the monster Turkey Trot 5M in Alexandria. Down in the deeper south, Dennis Manske held court at the Colonial HM in 1:35:14 (10K = 43:13). Brittain took the spot in a duel of 5Ks. His best was 20:43 to Manske's 21:45, albeit the week after Colonial.

Spots six and seven come from two of the three runners from the 50 Plus Club (Griffith is the other). Seems racing a lot works well. Roger Kilgore triumphs over Jim Noone this time as they met at Red Ribbon. Kilgore finished in 20:54; Noone in 20:56. Even with 37 ranked runners, there are plenty of age group wins (66).

RRCA Challenge 10 Mile, 70:28, 10K = 42:24

The top three runners usually come from three different spots. Mel Williams is famous for long distance running, including the state marathon record for grandmasters (2:37:22) and running every Marine Corps Marathon since that race began. It is no surprise that he easily set the 2006 best for the 20K, 25K, and 30K at the TS Tune-up runs. His best race, 30K, was in 2:20:57 (10K = 43:42). When he dipped down to a shorter race, it was his own tune-up 10K at the VAB Turkey Trot in 43:34. At age 56, Williams set the Virginia 10K record in 36:41. Meanwhile, John Elliott has been lighting up the short races in the north. He pulled away from the crowd, racing the Super Bowl 5K in 20:29 (10K = 42:42) and then took on the hilly MCRRC Country Road 5M in 34:39 (10K = 43:42). This nudged him past Williams.

Then along came what runners fear most, a hungry athlete moving into a new age group. Those not knowing Jack Pitarra had turned 65 had Elliott as a sure thing. They met at the RRCA Challenge where Elliot had a solid effort in 1:14:55 (10K = 45:05). Pitarra snowed us with a 1:15:51 (10K = 45:38) at the Loch Raven 10 Mile in January. Pay attention; Pitarra ran 1:10:31 last year at the Challenge. This year he blew the doors off the Maryland record by more than two minutes, racing 1:10:28 (10K = 42:24) and put himself on top of the list.

This will not be an easy reign. Places four through six are also runners fully capable of earning the crown. Malcolm O'Hagan was dominating at the Jingle All The Way 10K in 43:50. Cal Fowler won the Colonial HM in 1:37:38 (10K = 44:18). That is not an easy half but it was six minutes faster than anyone ran in 2005. Stephen Forman is nibbling away at many of the Best of 2006 races, including the best 12K at the Custis Lee in 57:23.

70 - 74 Men
Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M, 37:17, 10K = 47:01

Richard Williams was so ready to move into the new division and he was running times that were sure to put him in first. Then along comes Skip Grant of Silver Spring, MD. No one thought he was 70 as he sprinted by many a runner. Williams had five of the top nine times. Grant had the fourth of the top five. When they met at the Jingle All the Way 10K, it was all Grant, 47:18 to 48:41. Grant also won at the Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 37:17 (10K = 47:01). Chris Catoe owns southern Virginia with a VAB Turkey Trot 10K in 50:39. The next "beat" was fourth place Jack McMahon, losing the 5 miler to Grant but earning his spot racing 40:44 (10K = 51:22). Williams bested fifth place Larry Dickerson at the Virginia Run 5K 24:13 to 24:57 (10K = 52:03).

75 - 79 Men
YMCA Turkey Chase 10K = 48:03

Jack McMahon was starting to take a beating in the 70-74 division, fading to fourth, so he aged up to the next division. He immediately took control with his best race, a 5K, more than five minutes ahead of second place Paul Madden. His time at the Red Ribbon 5K was 25:22. He raced the GW Birthday 10K in 53:52. While most of the races in this division were 5Ks, fourth place Bill Law ran the B&A Half Marathon in 2:27:50.

80 & Up Men
Cold Turkey 10K, 60:10

Walt Washburn of Vienna, VA is a prolific racer, often running 50 or more races a year. This period he raced New Year's Eve and New Year's Day and it caught up to him. Those were his only two races of the period. He has been on injured reserve since then. George Brown of Glen Arm, MD steps up to the plate. He raced a couple of 5Ks in Baltimore to win the crown. Traveling to southern Virginia he ran the short-race 10K in the Tidewater Striders Tune-up series, winning in 1:14:05. Larry McGovern ran in the other two Tune-up races, garnering a 1:15:18 10K for second in the division.
