2008 Winter WRR Runner Rankings
Men's Division
By James Moreland May/June 2008 For the Washington Running Report
Michael Hayden (18) of Lynchburg, VA uses a swift 38:57 at the
Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K to earn 24th ranking in
the teen division.
Open Men
Anheuser Busch Colonial Half-Marathon, 1:06:24, 10K =
30:08That Michael Wardian is everywhere. He runs scores of races all
over the country. When he is not setting the Guinness record
for the treadmill marathon or the baby stroller marathon, he is
darting out to an early lead at the Olympic Trials. He ended
this period breaking the National 50K Championship record in
2:55:05. That is a phenomenal 29:40 10K equivalent.
Unfortunately, that race does not count and we have to fall
back on his "training" race from the week before. On the rolling hills of Colonial Williamsburg, he raced a fine
1:08:14 to finish third overall. Fast improving Ezkyas Sisay of
Washington, DC won it all, the race and the division, with his
1:06:24. Sisay was gearing up for an even faster race he would
run at the Shamrock HM in the spring. His only other effort was
a fifth place finish he received behind, among others, Timothy
Young of Fredericksburg, VA 15:06 to 15:11. His time was a mere
ten seconds a mile faster than his brilliant half. So one may think Wardian would slide into second. Two weeks
before his 50K this avid racer lined up on Eisenhower Avenue in
Alexandria for what is always one of the most competitive races
in the region. This year the race had a small course marshal
issue and the lead runners ran a few meters too long before
finishing in a tight pack. Officially, the top three were given
identical times of 31:15 while fifth place Wardian settled for
31:50 a small ways back. Third place Stephen Crane of Silver
Spring, MD also qualified nicely, winning the Alexandria Turkey
Trot 5M in 25:11 to earn the runner-up spot in the division.
Crane had also jolted Wardian back a place when he won the
Rudolph Red Nose 10K 32:19 to 32:26. Indeed, Crane would have
won all six of his races except for the photo finish in
Alexandria. Steve Mance of Alexandria, VA was awarded second
place at that race and added a 15:22 5K win at the Christmas
Caper to get the third spot. Wardian was close behind Solomon Semunguse of McLean, VA 31:30
to 31:43 at the
Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K with enough other heat
to garner the fourth spot. Semunguse's time matched Young's
best race exactly. He gets the lean for fifth winning the tough
off-road REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K in 33:17, while Young ran
a very close 10K equivalent, winning the Sweetheart 4 Mile in
20:36. Right there in the mix comes Jaron Hawkins of Frostburg,
MD This king of the mountain coasts to victory in western
Maryland winning a Turkey Trot in 15:55. When he needed a big
victory, he crossed all the way to Salisbury, MD for the Tim
Kennard 10 Mile and blasted a 52:16 victory to take over the
seventh place in the Elite Division. Brian Carroll of Portsmouth, VA won the battle of half
marathons, registering a 1:09:58 runner-up at East Beach vs.
ninth place Nathan Carlson's Colonial in 1:10:52. Carlson also
bested three of the next five runners at the GW Birthday 10K in
32:03.

Anheuser Busch Colonial Half-Marathon, 1:06:24, 10K =
30:08The division will be the property of Ezkyas Sisay as long as he
can stay under 20. With all the many fine teen runners, it is
amazing how well he dominated the field. He book-ended the
period racing 15:11 for the YMCA Turkey Trot in November. Then
he ventured south and historically torched the entire field at
the prestigious Anheuser Busch Colonial Half-Marathon with an
amazing 1:06:24. That is a 10K equivalent of 30:08. Mason Campbell of Towson, MD raced two excellent 5Ks including
the Super Bowl 5K in 16:39 for the runner-up spot. Christopher
Werner of Chesapeake, VA ran a swift 20:16 at the Mud in Your
Eye 6K with virtually the same time as Campbell. His second
race was well off Campbell's time, which was a 17:02 for the
fifth fastest qualifier. By the slimmest of margins Greg Grosicki of Fairfax, VA slips
by Naseem Haje of Hagerstown, MD. Both sported identical 17:04
best races. Haje added a 17:12 5K race. Grosicki ran the
challenging REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K in 35:56.

Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K, 33:11This traditionally small division usually has a clear-cut
winner. When last period's champion scored a fine silver at the
Celtic Solstice in 26:20 just ahead of last year's winter
champion, things looked copasetic. Bruce Berger of Richmond, VA
rattled the cage winning the Frostbite 15K outright in 52:00.
Three weeks later he charged home at the Sweetheart 8K in
26:15. Because the Celtic race was scored as an 8K (a small
race day detour concession to flooding), Berger now had the
fastest time. Colaiacovo answered back with a nifty 55:51 at
the RRCA Challenge. This made a Moreland Racing Factor
necessary to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Colaiacovo narrowly
prevailed 41 to 38 to remain champion. Fourth place Pete Breckenridge of Norfolk, VA ran the Mud in
Your Eye three-race series. His 6K was by far his best race in
19:54. Though slightly faster than the two top races for Pekka
Stenholm of Columbia, MD, it was not enough to prevail.
Stenholm ran the RRCA Challenge in 57:14 and the Acumen
Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K for seventh overall in 34:19.
Todd Bibb of Virginia Beach, VA out 20K'ed Max Lockwood of
Washington, DC 1:12:21 to 1:12:57 for the fifth spot.

Celtic Solstice 5M, 26:20, 10K =33:24In photo, Robert Denmark (42) of Arlington, VA is making his
way up the ranks racing just over six minutes a mile (37:57) at
the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K. Head-to-head, fast times, and the Moreland Racing factor all
played a large part in ranking this competitive division. Last
year's champion, Doug Mock, and last period's champion, John
Piggott, were pushed back to fourth and third respectively.
Andres Wright of Frederick, MD had two swift five milers for
two of the top three times. He improved his Turkey Trot win at
26:55 to a Celtic Solstice third overall in 26:20. Christopher Hamley had the second best time at the East Beach
HM in February with 1:13:49. Combined with his victory over the
notoriously successful Piggott (1:15:31), it was time to
calculate the MRFs for the top two runners. In Hamley's other
five races, he had two overall wins, including the 2:42:15 GW
Marathon, which improved on his third overall at the Northern
Central Trails Marathon in 2:46:02. Wright's third effort was a
solid but not intimidating age group win at the GW Birthday 10K
in 35:37. The MRF of 90 puts Hamley in the driver's seat ahead
of Wright's 54. Mock defeated quite a few division rivals at the RRCA Challenge
in 57:34 but it was not enough to catch Piggott. Piggott
marched through the Colonial HM in 1:17:55 that same day.
Mock's second race was training level Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M
in 29:31. Tom Banchy of Catonsville, MD won the next spot
besting Steve Levin of Reisterstown, MD at the Celtic Solstice
27:39 to 27:57. Banchy also had an excellent Metric Marathon in
1:36:50 for third overall. Levin moved on to the new division
in February but his RRCA Challenge in 57:34 squeezed him close
to Mock and Banchy.

East Beach HM, 1:13:38, 10K = 33:25Dai Roberts is the man when it comes to the long races
but he rarely gets a second race in. David Haaga started the
season with a third overall at the Turkey Burn-off 10 Mile in
59:01. In January, he was the overall winner at the Al Lewis 10
Mile. He was one of four runners in the division with two
overall wins. One of the others, Mark Stickley of Winchester,
VA, took the early lead winning the Turkey Trot 5K in 16:52. In
December at the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K,
Stickley lengthened his lead with a 34:17 for sixth overall. In December, last period's champion Greg Cauller of York, PA
romped at the Celtic Solstice in 27:38 to make a stretch run.
David Cascio of Reston, VA raced his hometown Fall Into Winter
10K for a swift 35:32 and a share of the action. Doug Kuderna
of Odenton, MD is a regular at the low-key Howard County races.
It is no surprise that he ran in their Metric Marathon. His
1:39:09 age group win muddied the waters. A week later, Gerrit
Labuschagne of Richmond, VA joined in with a second overall
17:04 at the Toy Run 5K. Lurking back in seventh place, Ted
Poulos of McLean notched one of his 12 age group wins,
finishing third overall at the DCRRC Burke Lake 12K in 43:52. In February, Haaga won the Country Run 5M in 28:00 well ahead
of Poulos in 29:42. That also moved Haaga to third place.
Labuschagne took fourth on depth, though Kuderna had quite a
few solid races as well. Cascio was fifth as his race was the
best of the three runners, even as his second effort was well
behind theirs. Cauller moved to third with help of his Colonial
Half Marathon in 1:18:54. In the final weekend Haaga stuck the landing, finishing second
overall at the B&A Half Marathon in 1:15:28 for the fastest 10K
equivalent (among qualifiers) of 34:14. Now the Moreland Racing
Factor comes into play. Stickley was 76 and Haaga earns the
crown with 89.

Way Station's Thanksgiving Day 5K, 16:54, 10K = 35:15Since turning 50, Stephen Chantry of Williamsburg, VA has been
the one to beat to get to the top. Maintaining the crown
against tough competitors such as Dan Lawson and the prolific
Maurice Pointer has been a real challenge. There have been some
fast times run by some elite grandmasters such as David Shafer
at Way Station but he does not race enough to qualify. James
Bates is on his heels and Pete Gibson of Murfreesboro, NC is
back and aged up. There is a whole host of runners about to or
having just turning 50 that include Jim Hage, Mark Malander,
and Greg Cauller, all of them former division champions. Still, the biggest challenge comes from recently minted
grandmaster Robert Marino of Hanover, MD, The Marino family out
of Philadelphia is chock full of fast runners. Robert has been
gearing up and plans to take no prisoners. Chantry began the
year with the fastest 5K at the Sentara Days in 17:05. Marino
aged up in December and had the next three fastest races. He
raced the Celtic Solstice in 28:18. He began the year with a
win at the DCRRC JFK 20K in 1:14:55 and scooted home at the
Valentine's 5K in 17:15. Chantry was spending the winter racing indoor track, including
a 9:34 3K and nearly waited too long to get a second qualifier.
The final weekend he raced the Fort Eustis 10K in 36:01. Both
of these talented runners had identical Moreland Racing Factor
scores of 31. To unseat the champion, you cannot just tie him;
you have to beat him. Thus, Chantry remains the division
champion. Jim Bates had the next fastest time racing the Anheuser Busch
Colonial Half-Marathon in 1:19:44. It was just ahead of the
next three times raced by Gibson. Gibson's best race, the
Tidewater Series 20K in 1:16:04, was very close and as he was
ahead of Bates' 1:18:33, he earns third place. Pointer
clarified his fifth place spot succinctly, winning the masters
division at the B&A Half Marathon in 1:20:49. The division bulged out to 45 qualifiers and by spring may be
the largest division of all.

Toys for Tots Holiday 10K, 37:56
In photo, Richard Carlisle (56) of Springfield, VA moves
down Ohio Drive for a 41:52 10K third place age group finish,
earning him 16th in the division. The race for the division champion was decided the first day of
the period. Naturally, the 22 qualifiers ran 89 more races
trying to change the facts. Rick Platt of Williamsburg, VA was
a little inconsistent having the fastest time as well as the
40th best time. Still, his 37:56 at the Toys for Tots 10K was
enough for the title. Tom Ruckert of Grantsville, MD continues
to improve and edge toward the top, running a Turkey Trot 5K in
18:14. His second race was 23rd overall. Platt's second of many
races was a 38:48 10K and he excelled with the fastest half
marathon on the not so fast hills in the Anheuser Busch
Colonial Half-Marathon. Steve Bognar of Lynchburg, VA is moving up. He raced the short
course Holiday Classic 5K (2.6M) for a 38:38 10K equivalent. A
month later on a real 5K, he finished in 18:58. This sort of
broke up the Dan Eddy and Richard Adams, Jr. rivalry. Eddy gets
the third spot winning the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way
10K in 38:51 over Adams' 39:13. Both of these runners had a
fast 5K as well. Adams ran 18:53 at the Red Ribbon while Eddy
started the year at the DCRRC JFK 5K in 18:48. James Moreland, at long last, returned to the rankings coming
in at last place (22nd). One runner asked (jokingly, we
hope), "Why can't you just rank yourself higher?"

AS Anniversary 15K, 1:02:04, 10K = 40:13This largest of the men's divisions has been up for grabs since
Patrick Griffith moved to Florida. It is tough to win. Quiet
John Kirkpatrick of Annapolis, MD did not get mad, he just got
even. Last period's champion, Ronnie Wong, was coming off a
marathon racing season that included eight marathons since the
end of September. Kirkpatrick pulled off the fastest 5K of the
season in 19:38 at the AS Valentine's race. Wong was a distant
second in 20:42. Also, winning the Anniversary 15K is a yearly
ritual for Kirkpatrick and it was the race that gave him the
crown. Bill Joyce ran the deceptively fast Fall Into Winter 10K in
42:52 but seven other runners had 10K equivalents faster than
43:00. Jason Page of Hamilton, VA is known for blazing 5Ks.
This year, he ferociously took on the 10K. He blazed a 42:04 in
February at the By George 10K, though perhaps his best race
effort was the REHAU Rotary Resolution 10K in 43:30 on New
Year's Day through the countryside hills of Ida Lee and Morven
Parks. A week after Page's best 10K, runners from the Maryland RRCA
Club met in Columbia for the RRCA Challenge 10 Mile. Bill Joyce
made a surprise visit from Herndon and earned the runner-up
spot from fourth place Wong, winning 68:38 to 70:33. The
amiable Wong loves to talk about his races during the race. His
best race was the Super Bowl 5K in 20:15. That same day he also
won first at the Penguin Pace 5K. Langston Shelton of Grafton,
VA ran 20:25 for fifth in the division.

Fall Into Winter 10K, 42:21There was nothing unlucky about Lou Shapiro's climb to the top.
He raced more than one in seven of all the races in his
division. He won all 13 times. He started the period with a
swift 21:05 at the Laurel 5K and ran the gamut of races
culminating with a win the last day of the period at the B&A
Marathon in 3:35:19. Along the way, he had the three fastest
times, including the Fall Into Winter 10K in 42:21. His second
best event was the AS Anniversary 15K ahead of fast developing
racer Joe Clorety of Crownsville, MD, 1:05:32 to 1:06:33. Clorety's 15K race pushed a second past former division title
holder John Elliott of Columbia, MD with a 10K equivalent of
43:08. Elliott had run the Turkey Burnoff 5M in 34:13 (10K =
43:09). Elliott enjoys the winter triathlons and for a while it
appeared some of his cross training would keep him racing
behind Clorety. Then, in mid January, he scorched the HCS
Atholton 5K in 20:35 to capture the runner-up spot. Skip
Mullaney of Charlottesville, VA earned fourth at a four mile in
27:15.

Tidewater Striders Tune-up 20K, 1:35:56, 10K = 45:47Chan Robbins of Arlington, VA excels in the shorter races. It
was Duane Lougee who first tested the waters with a 23:49 5K to
start the period. Robbins overmatched that with the fastest 5
mile race of the period. His Alexandria Turkey Trot 5M in 37:16
took down fourth and fifth place Ken Quincy and John Gluck.
Then to start the year, Skip Grant boasted the fastest 5K in
the division with 23:05 to move into second place. After that, Lougee took over the division with four races 20K
and longer. His best race was the 25K in 2:02:33 (10K = 46:15).
That was enough to hold off Robbins, who had a pair of fast
10Ks, especially the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K in
46:49. Looming on the rail is Mel Williams, whose first race in
the new division was a victory over Lougee at the 20K, 1:35:56
to 1:38:39. Though Quincy lost to Gluck by six seconds at the Red Ribbon
5K, he won his spot with his much faster Fall Into Winter 10K
in 50:04 ahead of Jerry Lewis who ran 52:20.

GW Birthday 10K, 53:03In photo, Charles Day (76) of Potomac Falls, VA snatched the
fourth spot in his division from Edward Green besting him at
the Fall into Winter 10K in December. George Yannakakis of Sparks, MD got a chance to qualify this
period and it appeared that the rivalry between the top three
runners would be revived once again. Larry Dickerson of Burke,
VA jumped out early with a 26:16 and Yannakakis was a minute
off at 27:16. Then the first Saturday of the period, Jack
McMahon of Rockville, MD laid down the hammer at the hilly
Turkey Burn-off 5M in 43:02. After that, McMahon accelerated to a runaway win with four more
top races, including a Christmas Caper 5K in 25:53 win over
Dickerson (26:56) and Edward Green. Then in February he pulled
farther away at the GW Birthday 10K in 53:03 over both Green
and Charles Day. That same day Yannakakis closed on Dickerson
with his win at the BRRC Valentine 10K in 55:21. Dickerson had
bested Green and Day at the Acumen Solutions Jingle All the Way
10K. Day and Green split wins, with Day having the fastest best
time.

YMCA Turkey Chase 10K, 58:12Last period's top two had one great race each and would have
repeated had they run a second race. Harry Freestone of
Keswick, VA moves up to the top with a fine hometown four
miler. Walt Washburn, featured in the last issue of the
Washington Running Report, is now halfway through his
86th
year. He bested youngster Philip Zenchoff (80) at the Acumen
Solutions Jingle All the Way 10K to get the runner-up spot. Robie Cone and Bob Atkins ran more than a dozen races. The
younger Atkins had nine age group wins for the third in the
division
